How we build our Side Tables.

  • This video shows the process of how we build and install a side table on our teardrop trailers. We used to have a folding leg that dropped down to the ground at the far end of the table, but in real world use, we found that the leg was always in the way and created a safety hazard if a dog or child bumped it hard enough to allow the table to fall. We came up with this double-gusset design to make the leg unnecessary, making it safer, more useful, and easier to deploy! If you take the time to level your camper, your table is automatically level as well! So far we are only offering these on Oregon Trail'R teardrops, but if we get enough interest in this as an aftermarket product for any camper, we may be convinced to add them to our online store... ;)

    Hey, thanks for the video. I've been working on getting someone help me with my trailer. One person is retiring way before his time because he blew his knees and has no insurance for the replacement. Please, please put some rubber anti-fatigue mats around your work benches. Don't kneel directly on concrete. Also, consider making another taller station to your standing edging table, so you won't have to kneel to screw the edging in.
    Your videos are an enormous help modeling construction techniques, but you are missing an opportunity to model how protect your body so it will allow you to do this for as long as you want.

      I don't disagree with you at all. I'm not the model of proper joint care or ergonomics by any stretch. Right or wrong, I tend to place importance on workflow efficiency for the project I'm working on, vs long-term health. For example, there are a few reasons we don't have anti fatigue mats around our workstations. They make cleanup very difficult (I spend several hours per week sweeping, would probably double if I had to sweep around mats regularly), they are tripping hazards (not a great thing when everything around you has a spinning blade attached to it), and most importantly, they make it really difficult to roll things around (many of our tools are on wheels, and we use wheeled carts constantly to move parts, etc). That said, I actually do have miles of the stuff, and I should absolutely try to be better about using them more. There are a few work stations that I spend considerable time at where the benefits would outweigh the costs... Thanks for your concern, and for the reminder!

      @@OregonTrailR Your guys could wear knee pads , you don't have to sweep around them.

    These are awesome. Can you tell us what you used for the metal edge banding? I ask because it looks like it has a lip on the top and bottom. Or is it just a straight piece of aluminum? Thank you for posting the video!

      Thank you! That is 3/4" aluminum "nosing." Has a little lip at the top to capture the top surface, bends easily... We use a ton of the stuff!!!

    Is that carpet tape or some special type of double stick tape? I've mimicked some of your techniques of my rebuilding of my vintage camper. I've used contact cement when sticking light weight aluminum. I hope it holds up. Thx for your videos!

      Yes, non-fiber carpet tape is my go-to for most of my double-stick tape needs! Well priced on Amazon, and seems to gain strength over time! Thanks for the comment, I'm glad our vids are helping people!!!

    Can you give me some idea on the type of sanding you did on the aluminum surface of table top?

      I use a gritty nylon scuff pad, going in circular directions. The key is to clean it REALLY well afterwords, until you can wipe it with a wet rag and the rag is perfectly clean.

    Please add them to your store. I need this in my life! 😁
    Can this hold a cooler?

    • @OregonTrailR
      @OregonTrailR  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      We have considered adding them to our store, however the install is a bit complicated (the video skips all the crazy leveling and measuring necessary for install), and the build process is so time consuming that we just don't have the free time in between all the teardrop construction! It can safely hold a cooler, but it would be necessary to mount it over the top of the "gusset" to avoid some deflection in the table. Next time we build a pile of these, I'll try to throw a couple extra in if I have the time/materials to do so. Check back in a couple months?

      OregonTrailR will do. Thank you! Oh wait... It's been couple of months already!😜 do you have any extra that I can buy? I want to buy 2 pls. I will drive to OR to pick them up! Pls?!

      Hey! I haven't gotten around to building another batch of these bad boys yet, but I'm getting close. Could you email us at info@oregontrailer.net to ask for a quote and lead time for a set of side tables (mirrored I assume for each side?). This will get you through the proper channels to get taken care of effectively. Thank you!

      Yikes. I understand I’ve lost your business already, but I am super curious what your bad experience was. We are a small crew and I’d like to know if I screwed something up for you or if someone else here did, what happened, and how I could fix it. So would you mind elaborating?
