  • Granite Street is a new housing development project in one of Melbourne's outlying areas. There are some huge rocks here, follow me as I reduce them to manageable size. In the next video I will get into blasting some of the sewer trenches.
    See part 1 first - • Blasting Granite Stree...

    Hah - the "rock island"! - nice drilling that with the machine. That took some covering too - nice bang :) That next rock was a pretty large 'slab' - looked like a good 30 holes... (33 I think I heard you say). Very nice uniform lift - and result. Next - heck, another real monster... phew, 62 holes. Looks nice soil there. Another nice lift and result.
    Had to chuckle when you said on that previous video that you had your hard hat blow off twice - sure looked wicked windy.

      Yes, even although the dust collector works quite well, the unseen lung clogger is the large amount of oil that I add to the drills air supply, this one needs a lot of oil or they chew out very quickly and cost $$$++ to rebuild - so a lot of oil is good but breathing it is not so good, believe me.

    Dave, what is the difference in VoD between your emulsion and your det cord? When you use the det cord on a shot, do you just stick a single strand in a hole? Do you cap it and does det cord get delayed like your emulsion shots? I'd really be keen to get some more technical information about loading shots. If you have done that already, i apologize for not finding it already.

    • @demolitiondavedrillandblast
      @demolitiondavedrillandblast  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi TG, the emulsion Orica Senatel Magnum and the VOD is ~3400m/sec. The VOD of cord is ~7500m/sec. Every hole still gets some emulsion, which does the work, the cord just joins them all up. Usually no delays used.

      @@demolitiondavedrillandblast I've seen photos of a smaller trailer mounted crusher with an out feed belt and then one that is used on a excvator.

      I work in a quarry when we got the self-propelled jaw crusher it was working on a jobsite about two weeks before it came to the pit. All they were doing was running blast spalling through it to clean up the build site before it was hauled.
      The guy running it said they were getting an easy one and a half truck loads of rock in a dump truck after running it through the crusher. It would depend on how much rock needed to be moved to make it practical on a site.

    Just curious on the mechanics. You drill a 1.6m hole, you fill the bottom of the hole with 10-30cm of magic stuff and cap it off. When the fairy powder goes boom, the whole rock breaks pretty symmetrical it looks like. Why does top of rock break just as much as bottom of hole rock. Love the videos and the details.

    • @demolitiondavedrillandblast
      @demolitiondavedrillandblast  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question CC, It does not always go just right, in order to get it to work just right you have to juggle a whole lot of variables that are all interrelated, for example the load rate in grams of explosive/m3 of rock, the hole diameter and spacing, the hole diameter to depth ratio as this greatly effects the distribution of the explosive, The choice of explosive etc. The rock is usually more smashed up toward the bottom of the hole, thanks for watching CC

    Love the slow motions, when you hear those pops first, and boom little later. Are those pops some nonel things or stuff like that?
    Great video dave

      Yes they are the nonel tubes from the end of each row that stick out from under the cover as a witness tube so that I know all of the holes have fired and no tubes got damaged during the covering operation.

    It’s too bad you had to cover those big shots, would’ve been spectacular. With a big job like that will the contractor share your information with the people who buy properties there for you to come back and help with basements?

      Oh for sure, I'm already in talks with one property owner that wants a pool there, They would be crazy to build a basement here.

      @@demolitiondavedrillandblast Cool thanks for the info. Right of course, I’m from the Canadian praires so everyone has a basement would be rare to not have one.

    I don't understand why you take the broken rock and place it on the ground nearby instead of loading it on a truck and hauling it off for disposal. Are you getting paid by the hour?
    Are granite boulders that common on every jobsite?

      On this job truck access has been a big problem because soft ground and so much rain recently, seems we are lucky to have Two dry days in a row. The rock is being stock pilled in one corner of the site - when we are able.

      Hi Travis, This is a high quality half face respirator with an organic vapors canister. Even although the dust collector works quite well, the unseen lung clogger is the large amount of oil that I add to the drills air supply, this drill needs a lot of oil or they chew out very quickly and cost $$$++ to rebuild - so a lot of oil is good but breathing it is not so good, believe me, and although many people might think this is a non issue... If you are breathing this oily air every day it does not go down well.

    I dont want to be unnecessarily whining about safety And I know you are a shining light in a sea of mediocrity when blasting,saftey, , a regular rock star of explosive power, so tell me. are you using electrical detonators, signal tubing or what to initiate..? You were talking about rain, we can see clouds,..thats usually not good news, and did you use meters to measure ambient electricity before pushing the go button///How did you do that bad boy ?Thanks.

    • @demolitiondavedrillandblast
      @demolitiondavedrillandblast  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm using nonel dets and electric firing, email me for exact method explanation. No need to measure ambient electricity, just observe the normal precautions e.g. no use if thunder storm is looming, safe distance from HV powerlines and radio transmitters etc.
