    Amazingly delicious salad! 🥗 With all that wonderful knowledge, you’ll not only survive, but thrive! LOL, about getting the light… I hate having to use the light when I harvest at night due to all the flying bugs coming towards my face. Sometimes you do what you have to do! Thanks a million for all this much needed knowledge Holly! Take care, Peaches 🥰🌹👩🏽‍🌾

      I'm glad you've been enjoying the good food growing around you, EugenePatti V! Even a decade ago, I had paid over $30 for salads at hotel restaurants while traveling for work, and I never had a better salad than the wild ones I picked for free. It really is amazing how delicious wild salads are. Happy foraging! :D

      I"m glad you've been enjoying my videos, Simple Man, and hope you find them helpful, too. I was fortunate, for sure, to learn some plants and mushrooms as a kid, from my Dad, who learned a lot from his grandmother. That taught me to see that there are key differences between different kinds of plants. That made it easier for me to learn more on my own as the years went by, from books and practicing on my own, and now from the Internet and comments that people leave on my videos, too.

      @@HaphazardHomestead That is interesting you learned from parents and grandparents and then on your own. I wonder if that is why I am drawn to your video's. I find them much more relaxed, fun, personable and complete than educational video's I tried to learn from. I have learned from books but you put it all together for me and I am one happy wild edibles harvester now🥰 Thanks Holly!

My fiance always teases me about getting distracted by and eating from plants and fruits I find while walking along, but this is the bounty of nature we are supposed to connect with!! What a lovely tradition! It's a great way to celebrate the arrival of the new year, feeding the body with natures own food. I love that idea and will try it. Although it will be interesting to see what I find under the snow and cold here in northern BC, if anything, lol.
    The detail in this video is awesome. What to watch for, how to pick, what to pick, how to separate & clean each species and how to prepare the nuts and cook them and the mushrooms, it's like we were celebrating with you!
    Had a laugh when I read Fred Sanford's comment as I thought the same thing. Love pulled pork and would dive in for sure. You really know how to live off the land, in your back yard yet! Most plants here die back when freezing temperatures arrive but I'm still going out to see if anything is hardy enough to hang in there till spring arrives.
    Thanks for another awesome video Holly and happy harvesting!

    • @HaphazardHomestead
      @HaphazardHomestead  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You might like my video on a great salad I made with mulberry leaves and berries, and grapevine tendrils (th-cam.com/video/Dim1ksiJeJc/w-d-xo.html). It shows some on how to tell if they are ripe. They will cook like any other berry, with the less-ripe ones having more pectin. But with mulberries, that little green stem goes all the way through, so people will have to eat them or you have to strain the berries and just use the juice. Mulberries are so great! I hope you can enjoy yours!

      You got it, fred s. I roast them with potatoes, onion, carrots, celery. People cannot tell the difference from the dark meat of a turkey that way. I put them in the slow cooker, too, and then take all the meat off and shred it. It's just like pulled pork that way, so it makes a great BBQ sandwich. And the sidebelly of those big ones is something else, like the best pork cutlet you can imagine. They are legitimate food in places where they came from, and are worthy of any meat-eater's appreciation.

    Love the abrupt time lapse on the consumption portion of video. Also, I've always had a strong stomach , and as a child , was no stranger to poke and wild onions, and I also have virtually no allergies; my question is this, are there any common undesirable effects on the g.i. tract, aside from gas, at least initially, upon making wild edibles one's primary food source?

    • @HaphazardHomestead
      @HaphazardHomestead  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's an interesting question, Jery Dob. I've never had any g.i. issues with wild foods, and I've never heard any issues from any of my extended family (from grandparents down through great-nieces and great-nephews). Wild food is not inherently problematic compared to other fresh produce from the garden or store. But if a person is not used to eating greens, other vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, and so on, maybe that shift from what they are eating would be noticeable.
      I have seen problems, though, where somebody gets really enthused about a particular wild food and then starts to eat it too much, rather than keeping a balance of different kinds of foods. Or they start eating/drinking a specific thing every day for weeks and months. Variety and moderation still matters, even with wild foods.There is a huge variety of edible wild plants and mushrooms out there, so the more we know, the more variety we can get. Hope that helps!

    Wow! Amazing how much you know and share with us, thank you! This salad is so interesting, I did not know you could eat Gingko nuts or those mushrooms. I'm letting g my backyard go wild, I have some grass but quite a few edibles, too, so it's my wild garden. I have sunflowers going crazy, too. I pick the sprouts and eat them, but now they are feet tall, are there any parts on mature sunflowers, before seed development, that are edible?

    • @HaphazardHomestead
      @HaphazardHomestead  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's great you have a wild yard that's providing you with food, too, Donna Leveron. I have a video on eating sunflower buds that you might find helpful (th-cam.com/video/zL8uxij94mc/w-d-xo.html). Sunflower buds are so tasty, the plants are worth growing just for eating the buds. They taste like artichoke hearts and are easier to prepare than artichokes, too.
