    Would it be even better if I vacuum seal the first than throw them in the freezer, after doing what you did?

      Yes it would.

      @@BigEasyQuest thanks, should I mix the rock salt with the water before I put the fish in or let the rock salt sit on the bottom? I really appreciate you answering back so quickly. 😁

      Just happened to be on TH-cam lol. I usually add salt then ice then add water to get the right consistency for slushy. Just good enough to push the bait down to freeze. But be careful you can freeze your hand.

    Nice and simple for the little green sunnies I use for cutbait on my lake. Gonna try this out for sure. Thanks!

    The reason this works is because the salt brings the water temperature below freezing point.

    can use rock salt like they put on icy sidewalks in the winter?

    • @BigEasyQuest
      @BigEasyQuest  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can but it would be cheaper just to use crushed salt for softwater

    do you need to mix up the salt & water or just leave it alone in the bottom of the cooler

    • @BigEasyQuest
      @BigEasyQuest  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just leave it alone 👍

    Do you need to keep the minnows frozen when you go fishing? I froze some minnows last year for sturgeon fishing and they worked well at first but as they started to melt they became mushy and wouldnt stay on the hook, so is there something you can do to prevent that other that keeping them frozen?

    • @BigEasyQuest
      @BigEasyQuest  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately no once it thaws it will get mushy. All this does it trap everything in the body and keeps the bait from rotting before you freeze it.

      well if you catch them a day or two before you can just keep them on fresh ice drain water dont let them sit in water but just on the ice and keep adding ice and draining water when needed for up to 5 days and they will stay firm but ya will get softer a lil each day.

    I use a bunch of ice and add some water to it so i catch shad put in a seperate tub of water to get the slime and stuff off them. I then after about 10 minutes get them and put them in the ice and water mix that way the body temperature is dropped fast

    Does this work for shad also? I've heard shad don't freeze well?

    • @BigEasyQuest
      @BigEasyQuest  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It can just have to make sure after you flash freeze it to dry it off and seal and freeze with no shad touching each other and that might work for bigger shad. I believe the small ones its better off just catching fresh

    I don't get it, when you are trying to melt ice on your pavement in the winter, you apply salt, but if you want to freeze your bait, you add ice to salt, hmmm???

    • @BigEasyQuest
      @BigEasyQuest  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This is how old-fashioned ice cream makers lowered the temperature of the ice cream below water's ordinary freezing point. A mixture of rock salt, ice, and water packed in the bucket around the ice cream mix can bring the temperature down as low as -21°C.
      Why does the temperature drop? Energy is required to snap the hydrogen bonds that hold the ice together. The melting ice draws that energy from the surrounding solution as heat.

    the nasty bait is the smell and the oils it puts in water it draws in the fish. i do trotlines i just keep it on ice and drain water and replace ice as needed till the fish start feeling to soft to stay on the trotlines. but i do have a lot of frozen gizzard shad we dipped one night i should have done this method. but im new at doing it so im not great at getting bait so i use the frozen when i cant get more fresh. luckily i catch freshwater drums on the frozen shad which helps for the next day having fresher bait lol. as long as i dont have to spend money on bait ill be good. and as long as i can learn to get it or always have at least frozen then its better then having to buy or having none.

      Cat Daddy Fishin well if you just put salt on your bait over a couple days it will pull all the fluids out of your bait. With the water salt and ice it makes everything freeze fast so there isn't any chance of decomposition.
