    If you click "SHOW MORE" in the description above your be able to see Links to the Tools 🔧🔨🔧 I use. Also Clickable Chapters📋 📙 throughout the video and other Links 🎬 that may be of interest. I've had a few viewers request where they can buy the tools they see in some of my videos but it's not very clear that the "SHOW MORE" tab has a lot of information in that may be of interest. Admittedly the amazon links are associated with me and I would earn a small commission which helps towards keeping the channel funded.

    Thanks for sharing the experience. Replacing timing chains/belts always seem extreme complicated to me. I'd be too scared to do it myself, although I like to work in my own car. Also, every car seems to need a specific tool set to remove them. Must be expensive to start as a mechanic.

I used to panic over timing belts but now I think if you take it steady and do each step carefully without being under pressure anyone can do them. Thank you for the work producing this video. I suspect my timing chain is on its way out as I keep seeing brass colored flakes and odd grit in the drain pan on oil changes. I think the flakes are the coating from the chain and the grit is the UHDP plastic wearing off the guides.

    • @CoatsandGaiters

    • @IsraelitesUnited
      @IsraelitesUnited ปีที่แล้ว

      @CoatsandGaiters The cam keyed. When I tried to turn the crankshaft, the chain just keeps slipping. So my theory is that it is slipping before.

      @CoatsandGaiters What I should of said is I did not have the tensioner bolt in, so the chain was loose. Thanks for uploading such a great tutorial. I do have an auto R53, I will replace the timing chain on my car. Does that gear and brake trick also applies to auto? Though I do have an air tools torque wrench, which I used last time to remove the harmonic balancer. Thanks

  • @johnhorgan5313
    @johnhorgan5313 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Does the camshaft mark line up to top dead centre (TDC)? It would be good to line up the crankshaft also, in case the timing chain position has moved. THe only way I can think of to line up the crankshaft (unless there is a mark as on the camshaft) is to put a screwdriver into cyl. 1 or 4 and rotate the engine until the piston is at the top of its travel. That of course is provided the camshaft mark aligns at TDC.

    • @CoatsandGaiters
      @CoatsandGaiters  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’d have to re read the manual but I only recall the camshaft and crank marks must line up with the 3 timing chain links as I recall off hand.

    Is it actually safe to drive or do you recommend chainging the chain way before this , when I put my ear close tot the engine I hear the chain rattle a little bit and I’m paranoid that it might break (it’s way quieter then yours used to be , I have a Mini Cooper with almost 130000 miles and as far as I know it has never been changed (I’m going on a holy day with the car)

    • @CoatsandGaiters
      @CoatsandGaiters  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the fear is the chain may jump a tooth if it's loose which may lead to other issues or problems. The tensioner may be an issue if it's not working correctly or is stuck. Mine was pretty noisy but I also had another rattle from the gearbox at the same time which I had to mend after the chain job. I always think it's a good idea to be sympathetic to engines as they get old and wear and avoid giving them a good hard throttling especially if things are starting to wear out.
