    I'm glad Astel addressed this, because sometimes I don't wanna stand out as the only English comment in the sea of Japanese comments lol. But I would never demand a Japanese talent to speak English more or even question them about it.

    For me, it's because most of the fan translators that used to be in some of the boys' chats during the period I got into Holostars just don't seem to be there anymore, so I genuinely don't know what they're talking about half the time, haha. The most I'll usually say these days is just a greeting and a "Thank you for the stream" at the end. Don't wanna sound like an idiot, y'know.

    I think some of the people who used to watch the JPstars who weren't that good at JP might have flocked to the EN side (that's just a theory and I'm not saying that negatively at all, its understandable after all) and on the other side theres also viewers like me who prefer to lurk because we dont want to feel like we are forcing them to switch language or breaking a chat rule or something like that
    But it's good to know Astel is fine with English comments as I tend to watch him from time to time but dont comment for the reasons above and also because my JP is not that good so while I understand the gist of it I'm not always sure so I dont want to risk being off topic etc

    • @MS-vk9ph
      @MS-vk9ph ปีที่แล้ว +28

      I would say most people lurk. I have most streamers on in the background while doing work and whatnot so it doesnt matter what they are saying. I think there is definitely more interactivity on the en side for a lot of the viewers purely because hololive is mostly male concentrated (in terms of viewerbase) as compared to niji in terms of its support.

    • @ManonLcz
      @ManonLcz ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@MS-vk9ph I can see that personally I lurk and have it on the background because I dont feel like I can contribute to JP streamers a lot (be it Holostars or Nijisanji where I have a lot of streamer I enjoy watching too) because of the language barrier the comments I can make a far and few in between and again theres this fear of not being sure you're not gonna derail the stream (also some JP streamers have definitely said they dont really like seeing english in their chats before though I wouldnt be able to remember who exactly if you asked me) in the contrary I feel like I can chat more or less freely in the EN chats because my level in english is good enough that I understand 99% of what's going on so I can just comment on things as they are happening with no stress 🤔 just my personal experience though!! (Also I usually play games myself when watching streams so stabbing out or pausing just to comment every 5 minutes would be a drag lol same with work etc so I get it)

I remember one time in Oga's Final Fantasy I stream where he was around 5 hours in, and I typed "He's already in the Ice cave? Oga just running through the game.", and Oga responded with "speedrun? No speedrun." (I mean 5 hours in, I probably just finished the Earth cave, but that was the old NES version). Fuma, Temma, and Rio have also responded to my comments sometimes. Izuru understands English! Part of his studies in University were in English.
      I believe what he meant by those rules - anyone feel free to correct me - was that he doesn't want there to be an expectation by kaigai fans that he will 100% read or respond to your message as comfortably as if it were in his native language, because it isn't. But English in chat doesn't make HIM uncomfortable or anything, no worries.
      Also, all of Holostars is cool with English-speaking fans. Not all understand it well, but they're happy to see you're still there, watching :)

    • @mauvepd
      @mauvepd ปีที่แล้ว +12

      to add further context on izuchama’s rule iirc that one applies mostly to game play streams only. He introduced that rule during an apex stream in which he used to get apex watchers coming into his stream and commenting on his gameplay in detail but he cant pick up their comments when they use complicated sentences while he’s trying to focus on the game.
      it’s perfectly ok to still comment in english just try to keep it in simple english, and dont feel bad if he cant respond to your comments 👍

    an eternal dilemma of watching jp vtubers is that jp fans tend to feel intimidated when the chat has way too many english comments in it (which is a whole nother can of worms in itself tbh, cos if you ask me some of it is just xenophobia) but what i really appreciate about astel is he always, always tries to address and do something about it in his own way. he does his best not to alienate his overseas fans even when we all know english is not really easy to learn for japanese speakers. one of my personal fave episodes is when he makes his fans fight each other with emojis on chat, he creates atmospheres in which kaigai and jp fans can freely interact with each other. understandably, that gets a little harder to do during fps streams when he’s grinding and focusing on gameplay. i myself try to comment more in english cos i also am conscious of encouraging other english speakers to try and participate in chat, but I understand that it can get scary at times. the key really is reading the atmosphere, thats it.

    • @vterans8804
      @vterans8804 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      It's not simply xenophobia, just try imagine it the other way around. Imagine at English stream, say like Holostars EN stream, then suddenly chat full of Russian. I bet one million percent almost all of English chats going feel uncomfortable by them. So it's the matter of when chats full of language that is not what it meant to be, the people who are meant to be the original audiences will somehow feel alienated.
      You can take a very close and latest example nowadays from Hakka's stream. Whenever he talks Spanish too much and chats turning full Spanish, the English ones vanished (yeah soke puns there). So it's nothing too specific such as calling out Japanese as xenophobic, it's just a normal common human reaction.
      So as "guests", it is our responsibility to make sure we're not flooding too much a place which is not ours and respect the original "owners". Tldr, keep everything in regulations and be respectful.

      @@vterans8804 while I do agree to a certain degree, astel has even stated before that there needs to be more synergy with the jp and en audience to be able to grow their following. I watch a whole lot of all of the jp holostars and love en now but still watch both, but I'm sure we can see that there has been a bit of a drain from the jp holostars in terms of viewership. I do agree to keep the chat civil and mainly in the language intended, but at the same time I didn't care too much when hakka's chat and waiting room were in spanish. i don't speak any spanish lol but I used translate to help me. My only aside in all this is as long as things dont get out of control, the jp side needs to be at least somewhat open like astel is otherwise jp holostars will stagnate. even till now much of the fanbase for holostars has been kaigai.

      @@mauvepd very tru. I understand that side as well. I’d like to think most people are good and think without jumping to conclusions. I’d like to think that both the kaigai and jp side are that and there are only a few bad actors on both sides. As a long time watcher of especially Aruran amongst others I really do think that holostars can be big considering the sheer AMOUNT of work they have put in. They just have to keep the balance between jp and kaigai to get enough welcome on both sides to get that synergy that astel was talking about. Hopefully we can even get more collabs in the future between en and jp where mixing of languages is warranted.

    The reason why English viewers don't always comment is because it just feels weird for us to see only ourselves speaking in an entire different language from a flock of Japanese viewers. Although I don't think the JP viewers would judge us but there's this lingering feeling at the back of our heads that we're being judged and is thought of as weird. Generally if chatters are having their own conversation amongst themselves, it’s frowned upon and can be annoying/distracting, especially if it’s starting an argument

      If its OOT i understand
      But what if someone ask just like he did about streamer strategies since they cant always see the comment because they need to focus on game?

      i mean it makes sense that you guys would be called or something since you mentioned the discussion was getting heated. jp viewers discuss about strategies as well so its probably the fact that the discussion was getting too personal and away from astel and his team

      Astel interacts a lot with English comments usually, but during a tourney, there are a lot of commenters who type between them and use the @ even though it's forbidden by his rules.
      He doesn't mind if we interact with him directly but he doesn't want his chat to be full of mentions and derive from what happens on the screen

      it’s because you’re not supposed to have a conversation among each other, that’s a common vtuber chat etiquette.
      you are free to chat in english but direct it towards astel and stay on topic
