Chrono Cross defender checking in! I just bought the Radical Dreamers edition and blasted through it in a few days. I like it more than Chrono Trigger too! I’ve done different playthroughs focused on having different party members. The little interactions that you can find by having the right people in your party during certain scenes adds a lot to the game for me. The combat is fun and flows. I love that you don’t have to worry about mana/MP or consumables. The story I think beautifully builds onto CT. My biggest gripe is that you spend more than half the game as Lynx and you only get to have Kid in your party for like the first third. Other than that, in my top 5 JRPGs of all time.
Yeah, I remember being bummed at how little you get of Kid when all's said and done. I mean, I get it from a story perspective, but still. But yeah, the game had SO many interesting and cool ideas that it's strange no other games really emulated.
If it's not you that's being betrayed, it's meeeee. I do think CC is probably a poor sequel if you came from Chrono Trigger and wanted more of what that was. If it was its own game, I think it would have a somewhat different reputation. And I DO prefer it, but I played it first. It was surprisingly long compared to my memory when I replayed it on the remaster's release, and it's from a time where the developers wanted players to pay a ton of attention to figure out how to proceed and see what the game has to offer, but I love it. I hope Shadow Hearts is rescued from IP hell at some point and at least given a Granda 1+2 style remaster. It doesn't deserve to be abandoned on old hardware for people who would gladly pay for it. I do not get the FF7R games at all. I think you're either on its wavelength or not, and I am not.
Shadow Hearts is owned by Universal Entertainment Corporation, they haven't made video games in awhile. If you go on thier website they don't even bring up that they ever made video games. They filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy in the US last year...they are a gambling company that filed for bankruptcy. Think of how many poor business decisions you have to make to file for chapter 11. The last game they ever made was a DS slot machine casual game and before that was the last Shadow Hearts...they haven't made an actual video game in 19 years. Shadow Hearts HD Collection will NEVER HAPPEN. The best you can hope for is a Shadow Hearts Slots machine in Vegas.
It would actually be very cool to see a remaster/remake of the Shadow Hearts games. In some ways they were very ahead of their time, so it'd be interesting to see how they do today.
Aw, I really enjoyed Dragon Quarter. You've just got to take it for what it is, and not judge it as a sequel to the prior games. I've been through it at least twice, maybe three times, and have very fond memories of it.
It does seem really cool (based on the bit of time I spent with it gathering footage). My initial attempt at playing it back when it came out just left me feeling disappointed, but I think I'm a more patient person now than I was then.
I never would have guessed they'd do that, though maybe I should have. They seem to be digging up the greats from the past and bringing them back, and TTYD is definitely one of them.
I've been playing rpgs since the early 90s however due to living in Australia I missed out on certain releases throughout the decades due to them not getting a PAL release. The big 3 "NTSC holy grails" that I chased were Xenogears, Suikoden 3 and Chrono Cross. In the early 2010s I managed to get ahold of Xenogears and despite Disc 2 I absolutely loved the game. In mid 2010s Sony gave some love to suikoden fans by putting the games on PSN. Suikoden is my favorite series but 3 eluded me for the longest time until the psn re-release. Despite its weird design choices I still loved the game regardless. After playing those two only one game remained .... Chrono Cross. For years I watched from afar seeing game publications and fans praise Chrono Cross even some saying it was the best PS1 rpg. To say I was excited to play it was an understatement. I've had a few false starts with me playing for a hour or two and dropping it because "a new game took my attention". Funny enough this year was meant to be the year I set aside some time and finally beat it ....... but I couldn't, because the truth finally set in. I hate it. Yes the music is spellbinding and it's visually is one of the best games on ps1 ..... but that's where my praises end. The Story is ... OK but the combat, "leveling" and element management is annoying and not fun at all. Hopefully I can get to the finishing line but I don't see myself doing it any time soon.
It's hard for me to recommend if you're having a hard time getting into it, because yeah, I can't blame you for those issues at all. I have really fond memories of it, but it's a complex game for me.
Good stuff! Shadow Hearts is a series in desperate need of a modern release! Dragon Quarter is one of a small handful of games I have voluntarily sold or traded over the years, I just couldn't get into it properly. Very disappointing after how much I loved BoF 3&4... Haven't played the Blue Reflection games, but I'm interested! Several of my favorite creators have spoken very highly of them. Chrono Cross is one that's been on my backlog for years, but I've always heard that it was divisive among the fanbase. I just played Remake in March, I really enjoyed it. When I eventually get a PS5 the Remake trilogy is my most anticipated experience! Tales of... is one those big holes in my RPG experience, I played about half of Abyss on 3DS, but the main draw to me for the series is actually the multiplayer. I'm always on the lookout for games I can play with my wife. Thousand Year Door seems like a fun time, may have to give it a shot! Xenosaga 2 is one I've been putting off for over a decade, for all the reasons you highlight here. If I didn't REALLY want to play Ep 3, I'd probably have given up on ever trying it, but I'll get there one day!
Ok strap in ***CHRONO CROSS COMMENT ALERT**** I super get why you don't want to play it and wouldn't try to convince you anyway, especially because the thing I'm about to say won't change that you don't like the gameplay. But I played Cross when it first came out (high school) and at that time the one resource was gamefaqs, but as a high schooler I did not have whatever it took to read plot analyses. Once a decade or so I'd go, "So... what happened... in that game?" and try to understand (usually failing). When the remaster came out, my roommate and I, who was in the exact same boat, actually made an effort to understand the plot. It's crazy and you'll need at least one resource open to reference, but it's actually really cool and rewarding when you finally put it together. Kind of, honestly, like Season 4 of Arrested Development.
My favorite JRPG sequel is probably Kingdom Hearts 2 because it improved on everything I didn't like about the original and added so much more new stuff on top of that. Also I'm not looking forward to Saga 2 whenever I get to those games hahaha
I absolutely agree that Blue Reflection: Second Light was a massive improvement over the first game. Just like you I still love the first game, but there is no way to deny that the second game is miles better. By the way - I chuckled a bit when you referred to the Atelier games for that time limit. I hate that in these games too. However, those time limits where only in the first three games of the Arland series and the first game of the Dusk series. All other Atelier games (10 of them) have no time limit at all (except for Atelier Escha & Logy and Atelier Firis, that have so extremely relaxed time limits that they could very well not exist at all). Anyway - I decided to dive into the 3 first Arland games (the 4th has no time limits), to see how bad they are. From what I understood only Atelier Totori has a harsh time limit and a (spoiler free) walktrough is advised. So - Let me see how bad it really is... 🙂
this channel should have 10x the amount of subs. super funny haha. your timing is perfect on a lot of these punch lines. not to mention the subject matter is completely on point. keep the videos comin, Brandon!
Sorry, but for me Xillia 2 is better than the first game, imo Xillia 2's story is very good with some really good plot twists, better than the first game's story, the gameplay is as good as the first game, the time travel aspect of the game is very interesting, you get even more character development of the very good cast from the first game and the ending is one of the most memorable I've experienced in a video game, Xillia 1 is still a good entry to the series, but for me overall I like the second game more.
so stoked for Daybreak!! I’m playing the Sky trilogy for the first time. I played Zero through Reverie last year and I’m tempted to NG+ them all before I play Daybreak - may sound crazy but Trails is my favorite series of all time now 😅
I find it surprising that you can't fully enjoy Chrono Cross anymore because the way I've always put it is that as a standalone game, it is one of the most interesting JRPGs of its era and bafflingly hasn't paved the future for the genre with its unique and innovative systems and designs, such as the speech thing that each NPC has which, sure, does lead to plenty of idiosyncrasy, but also completely circumvents a somewhat common issue of characters feeling like they don't belong or don't contribute to cutscenes unless it's their personal cutscenes That said, as a sequel it is pretty lackluster, its ties to Chrono Trigger are absurdly loose and only add confusion to an already confusing plot, to the point that they could be removed from the game with relative ease and almost no impact in the story and its systems for all their innovations are also a very big departure from the original own unique systems (which also haven't really paved the future of the genre...) and, most of all, game structure, with the two worlds dynamic being interesting and put to some good use, but much less impactful and inventive than the time traveling shenanigans of the original, with some places having close to no differences while others are vastly different for no discernible reason Maybe the reason you cannot enjoy it anymore is due to your own nostalgic love for Chrono Trigger blinding you to what Chrono Cross brings to the table in the light of what it could or should have been, or perhaps its attempts to tying back to the original as well as the "nonsense JRPG plot let's kill god syndrome" that's only lessening nowadays just make the game plot too hard to follow for its own good and, devoid of the curiosity and surprise of discovery, fail to entice the correct parts of your brain
Your takes are all based, but the one I have to agree most with is the one regarding Tales of Xillia 2. While it did have its moments...many things were uncharacterstic to the Tales of series, such as having a silent protagonist. Which is a pity, since Ludger had some potential.
So about that. Ludger isn't actually silent. He has a voice, and all of his dialogue options ARE voiced, but it's locked behind NG+. 🥴 Thank goodness for cheats that unlock it early.
I genuinely think they kept his character silent until NG+ because he shares the same voice as another character in the game, which may have spoiled some people on a certain plot point earlier on if they hadn't figured it out for themselves. So I think it kinda makes sense.
@@chronicallychic The issue is that it nerfs the game's production value. At a certain point just have it be obvious that they share the same VA or ask the VA to voice the other character differently.
And I think Chrono Cross was amazing when it released; I found it deeply affecting at that time. But I do find it very difficult to return to in modern times.
The last third of chrono cross is what makes the game, especially story wise. In my recent replay once I got to that part my thoughts on the game completely changed
I don't think I disliked Tales of Xillia 2 as much as you did, but yeah...I can't deny that it was worse, when compared to the original Xillia. The need to focus on Ludger just confused the heck out of me too. He's a boring character who takes the spotlight away from a much more interesting cast. I wanted to see the continued stories of Jude, Milla, Alvin, Elize, Leia, and Rowen. We KIND of get that, and I think that most of what we do get is good, but it always feels like the stories of the characters we actually care about get sidelined, all for the sake of a character that just really isn't interesting, and it all adds up to a conclusion that just feels kind of...meh. They either needed to give Ludger a more defined personality, so that we could care about him more, or they needed to just have the story follow the great cast of characters they already had from the original Xillia. Overall, Xillia 2 was still an enjoyable game, but it doesn't measure up to the first Xillia.
I agree, Tales of Xillia 2 us worse than the original with the choices and the silent protagonist. But compared to Tales of Symphonia Dawn of the New World it's a fricken masterpiece haha. But I am weird cause I even like that garbage fire for some strange reason!
Haha, Dawn of the New World is actually the only localized Tales of I haven't played. All the negativity about it put me off, and I wanted to get on to the other entries. I need to go back and play it one of these days though.
@@JustTheGems It's one of those games that actually gets a little better the further you get into it. At least storywise it does, I really liked some of the main antagonists and thought they were written pretty well. The main problem is this game destroys everything that is tales of symphonia about this game other than having the characters from the first one in it haha. The other problem is the main characters are literally unbearable at first and takes character development to a whole new level. Where you go from despising them to "oh they are not so bad now".
I believe I've said this under one of your other videos, but I definitely strongly disagree on Xillia 2. It's still one of my fave Tales games of all time. I just really liked all the time/dimension stuff. There were lots of strong and heartwarming story moments in there with the new characters and plot points. I think you can even argue -- hear me out -- they made Ludger silent so as not to hear similarities between his voice and a certain other character in the game (although the visual cues should be obvious to most, they won't be obvious to everyone).
You're right about the voice (though I think they could have worked around that in a better way, personally). And don't get me wrong, I definitely did enjoy my time with Xillia 2 overall -- I think my expectations were just set to a point where, what I was wanting wasn't what they were making, so I left feeling a bit let down.
I liked seeing Breath of Fire 2 getting some love, that's one of the greatest RPGs of its era and I can also understand where you are coming from regarding Chrono Cross. The game doesn't work well as a sequel. However, I do enjoy the game for what it is and I love it for that. It's similar to how I feel about SMT IV and SMT: Apocalypse. The game fails at being a sequel to a game that I consider to be a masterpiece but what it does well is something that I enjoy and love despite it failing at being a sequel.
For sure, and I know that around Cross's release, the developers were very keen to remind people it's "not really a sequel" to Chrono Trigger. At the time, that felt like hedging to me, but I can kind of see what they're saying.
I feel like I should play Shadowhearts: Covenant, I just can't get past Yuri's gettup. He looked so cool in the first game! I'm probably just being super picky though.
I’m with you on Chrono Cross. I want to love it, played through it once, started a few other times, and finally decided eh: it’s an ok game, but not enough for me to rebuy with the radical dreamers edition.
I kind of look at Chrono Cross as I do Majora's Mask: an incredible game in its own unique way, even if its older sibling is viewed as the evergreen, perennial masterwork. Granted, I like Majora way more than OoT, but more people are still prone to choose OoT - just like how more people opt for Chrono Trigger over Chrono Cross.
Not gonna lie, I’ve never even heard of Tales of Xillia but your description of the protag’s voicework being hidden behind new game plus is absolutely bonkers. Who on earth makes that decision.
I feel the same way about Xenogears that you do about chrono cross, on your recommendation i spent a small fortune getting a copy to play here in the PAL region. I so wanted to love it, and everything says I should, I love evangelion and gudam wing which xenogears clearly mimics. I unfortunately just felt iwas a bad game, the mechanics (jumping, camera , skills) were frustrating, the script (not the overall story) so much was needless or filled with self contradictions, and worst of all was the sound design (not the ost) that god darn siren alarm going off constantly for 50% of important conversations was ear splitting! I'm very glad I got to play it, just to experience the start of the xeno series (I can now move on to saga then blade) And it definitely left a lasting impression on me, im just sad it wasn't a purely good one. Thanks for the recommendation.... I think lol
I say props to you for giving it a shot. It's such an old game, and it's easy for me to admit that I can overlook a lot of those issues because of that -- issues that I wouldn't be so kind to a modern game if it had them.
Tales of Xillia 2 was one of the ones I struggled to get through as well. My gripe honestly was just how off the rails dark and depressing the story gets. I really began to feel the writer of this game was going through some sort of crisis halfway through. I am all for dark stories, Berseria nailed it for me in that regard, but Xillia 2 just I guess went too far with it for me.
I love Chrono cross and over the years it's become one of the games I go back and replay most. It is very different from trigger though which is my favorite game ever. I would never try to talk someone into liking it, you ether do or don't.
I agree with all of your weaker sequals. I would agree with all the improved sequals except I haven[;t played them all yet. Blue Reflection 1 and 2 are both on my shelf and in my queue, and my Shadow Hearts 2 playthrough was halted by a scratched disc. I've since obtained another copy, and I'll get to it when I get to the PS2 era in my 5 games I missed from each generation project.
Thanks to my cousin he gave me his PS2 games so I only have shadow hearts from the new world and haven't played it yet but don't know if I should if I haven't played the other.
@JustTheGems sweet when I can get the time maybe I'll give it a shot. I need to save up and work for Mario Thousand year door on the switch such a life of an adult haha.
my thing with Chrono Cross is, if you go into it and play it "as a game" its very good. if you go into it as a "chrono trigger sequel" you will be disappointed.
Dang... you disliked Ludger so much, you called him booger @19:40... nice. For #1 & #2, like you said, I don't think either are inherently BAD games, but they both were REALLY riding coattails. I can't personally speak on #3 or #4 of your bad sequels, as I never played them... but I CAN be thankful for the eventual xenoblade games, they're one of my favorite.
I prefer covenant aswell but I dont think Its a better game across the board. I definitely the atmosphere/tone and graphical style of the first. I still would rate the first game a 9/10 Its so good. I have not touched Breath of Fire 5 since it came out, all I remember that I did not like it. I am Chrono Cross defender and I really like the game as a whole. I really only have 1 complaint about the game but Its a big one for me, most of the side characters are not that interesting. I find that the story is pretty interesting but most of the side characters are not imo. I love everything about Remake and Rebirth so far. Have nothing but praise for the trilogy so far. Yea I was also disappointed Xillia 2, but not as much as you it seems. Ludger being silent, not liking what they did with the characters from the first and the debt system was not my thing lol. I am gonna give another go when I have the time to do so. Paper Mario 2 is favorite mario game and a 10/10 in my book so. I am a Xenosaga 2 defender, I enjoyed it when it was released. When I replayed the trilogy last time I did beat Episode 2 in 13-14 hours. If you are knowledgeable about the game, you can breeze through it. But I understand where you are coming from.
The outtakes are great, and good picks. I get the Chrono Cross angle, but I was in a weird boat where I player Chrono Cross first. I still haven't finished Chrono Trigger . . .
I don’t think Chrono Cross is better or worse than Chrono Trigger. It’s just different. Kinda like how Dragonball is different from Dragonball Z. DB was all about following a kid named Goku and his adventures while he was trying to find the titular dragon balls. But Z is about watching Goku and his friends learning new moves to take on the current threat in a grand spectacle. Do these differences make one better than the other? No. They’re just 2 different experiences occupying the same space
Yeah, I can see that. The conceit of the video is really just a way to positively and negatively compare two games in a series, so "better" and "worse" is always going to be subjective based on experience anyway. But I hope my respect for Chrono Cross came through in what I talked about, at least.
Great list, I agree with everything you have picked. For me, Persona 2-5 are all better than Persona 1. Persona 1 unfortunately didn't age so well in my opinion. Also, while not a true sequel Trails in the Sky FC is miles better than Legend of Heroes 1-3 on the PSP. While they aren't bad games very mediocre and I didn't end up finishing any of them.
Better: Octopath II, Ni No Kuni II, Ryza 2, Trails in the Sky SC Worse: Xillia 2 I agree, Pokemon USUM, Breath of Fire II, ugh I actually think FF Rebirth is worse than Remake and I didn't like Remake lol
Octopath 2 is really interesting to me in that, I agree that it is objectively better than Octopath 1 in basically every way, but I somehow played all the way through 1 and couldn't finish 2... I think a big part of that, though, was just that there are way more games out now than there were when 1 came out.
@@JustTheGems I think I came on your videos once to shit-talk OTII buuuutttt that was before I played it and I'm ngl I assumed people talking about OTII in the very positive ways they did were like, delusional? I really didn't like 1 at all and I felt like the only one who didn't. and 2 looked so similar. but then when you play it it honestly feels like night and day. I was wrong but I am really happy about it!
Did I hear a booger sugar joke in here? Also nice trying to bring up Chrono Cross as a bad game knowing it'll farm engagement but hey it worked. It's a great game I feel like it hurts to play if you're OCD about doing everything in a game though because your choices impact the game so much.
Hahah booger sugar. Yeah - I was kind of put off in CC by the character routing and stuff, and just the fact that other than a small handful, I really didn't connect with any of the characters (it kind of seemed like they didn't really WANT you to connect with most of the characters, which is why it's odd they just packed so many in there.)
BoF: D4th is never gettting another play through CC is not a sequel. Yes it has Chrono in the name, but it was a decent game just had some obvious issues. FF6 > CT, when comparing. I beat it, but it would take someone holding a gun to my head to play through again. FF: R1 & R2 can die. I like the looks of it. I dislike action games in general and they are just kind of hard to me for no reason. Most of the Paper Marios are just bad, compared to SMRPG or 1000 Year Door. Some of the Mario Rpgs on the hand helds were good. Not a fan of any of the Xenosagas. Combat and movement was just so slow compared to Xenogears.
Always so happy to see another video by you. Shadow hearts Covenant is such a great game. I feel like if dragon quarter had not been named breath of fire it would be beloved. It's a rogue like with cool cell shaded graphics. Chadley sucks!! No I'm kidding I have no idea who that is. I've not played any of the Xenosaga games but I hear 2 is pretty bad. The Kiseki Nut did some pretty great videos on all 3 after he beat them for the first time recently. Great watches.
I'll concede that Chrono Cross is more interesting than Chrono Trigger - the swings it took were huge, especially by JRPG standards of the time. Chrono Trigger could be criticized for "playing it safe" and simply perfecting the formula that had already been established by its peers, but I think that's part of why it endures.
@@JustTheGems its all around a much more interesting approach to space as opposed to time, a wide cast that adds replayability and different methods to achieve similar results with different people, suikoden style recruitment where you can miss them if youre not careful, a unique combat system, specialized bosses that can be cheesed using the unique combat system, an rpg where you can grind a little if you want but arent patronized by not, and a deep story about the idea of ones true self and the choices made in life. Plus the soundtrack. The only complaint anyone ever has is "it doesnt reference Trigger enough" I am a little biased, having played Cross before Trigger, but without knowing the two were even supposed to be connected, I enjoyed one immensely more than the other.
For me, the pacing and the amount of playable characters you can get is what kill my enjoyment with Chrono Cross. The plot doesn't get nearly as much attention till the last quarter of the game and even than, it was an wasted potential. Nothing got very interesting to me and there's very little info on what happens after the events of Chrono Trigger. Like there's an artifact that's supposed to be an part that came off of Lavos and that's it. And we never know what happened with Chrono or Marle or Lucca or the Frog or whatever. Like did they passed away? Did they disappear? Where they got there part of Lavo's? What happened? And don't even get me started on the side characters. Having 39 playable characters at your playable is overkilled and I couldn't keep up with them. Having over 9 playable characters is too much for me in an RPG. Which is also my big issue with Final Fantasy 6 as controversial as it may be. Also I'm not the biggest fan of the battle system. Too overwhelming for me and it's slow as heck. The only thing I do love about Cross is the presentation and especially the soundtrack. But everything I couldn't be bother. I wanted to love Chrono Cross. I really do. But I just couldn't.
All the points you make are definitely things I've felt, too. Particularly the fact that there are so many characters. You're never going to get strong characterizations with a party that size.
I would LOVE to see the Xenosaga trilogy and the Shadow Hearts games get reboots or remasters. Loved the judgment wheel in SH. Also, time limits in rpgs...not a fan.
Like they said most atelier games, but I agree, time limits tend to be annoying. The only game that I finished with that was Atelier Escha and logy, the time limit there is very manageable.
If you haven't seen it, keep an eye out for Penny Blood. It's not an actual Shadow Hearts reboot, but it's from the creator and it's a more or less spiritual successor.
Hard to say if I have encountered one bad sequel in what I've played. Maybe Ni no Kuni 2 (that I'm still playing); don't get me wrong, the game is fun and good, but comparing the story, characters and exploration to the first shows its flaws (the combat in the second is pretty fun, but i like both). Now, i wonder if there will be a day when we talk about a Sequel of Harvestella 🥹
I really hope that both Ni No Kuni as well as Harvestella get sequels! Ni No Kuni got some weird mobile game that basically plays itself, but that's not my thing. Harvestella I just finished and I loved it, but I have a feeling it's not popular enough to get a sequel 😢

Hot take with Chrono Cross. Although I remember trying this game as a kid and not getting it at all and never finishing it.
It's challenging in more ways than one, for sure
TTYD is utterly fantastic, and I'm so happy we got that remake. I've been loving it all over again!
I never would have guessed they'd do that, though maybe I should have. They seem to be digging up the greats from the past and bringing them back, and TTYD is definitely one of them.

I mean until 2008 Chrono Trigger wasn't released in PAL territories lol.
It's hard for me to recommend if you're having a hard time getting into it, because yeah, I can't blame you for those issues at all. I have really fond memories of it, but it's a complex game for me.
Nice list I definitely agree with Paper Mario TTYD to bad Paper Mario never peaked again lol (so far)
Yeah, I was optimistic for the future of Paper Mario after TTYD, and then... well, nope.
The great thing about Shadow Hearts is that whole Penny Blood Kickstarter, I'm really excited for that and I hope it lives up to its predecessors.
That's honestly the most compelling argument for giving this another playthrough I've heard yet.
Hey Brandon you're leveling up bro another great video keep these up!
Thank you so much!
I'm always surprised when I come across comments stating Xenosaga 2 was about 20ish hours, it felt eetteeeeernaaaaaal.
Right?? No way that game was any less than the 1000 hours it felt like it took
@@JustTheGems I'm glad I was able to push through though, Episode 3 was definitely worth it
My favorite JRPG sequel is probably Kingdom Hearts 2 because it improved on everything I didn't like about the original and added so much more new stuff on top of that. Also I'm not looking forward to Saga 2 whenever I get to those games hahaha
KH2 really did improve on everything from KH1, I remember being SO hyped when that came out back in the day.
No need to apologize to Takahashi for not caring about Xenosaga II...he didn't have that much to do with it.
Totori's the next one on my list, so... Yeah, I guess we'll see!
this channel should have 10x the amount of subs. super funny haha. your timing is perfect on a lot of these punch lines. not to mention the subject matter is completely on point. keep the videos comin, Brandon!
Hey, thank you so much! I really appreciate it!
That's fair! I still think it's good, I just vibed with the first more.
The blooper reel reminded me of my TH-cam days. It's hard work. Keep it up Brandon
Thank you!!
so stoked for Daybreak!! I’m playing the Sky trilogy for the first time. I played Zero through Reverie last year and I’m tempted to NG+ them all before I play Daybreak - may sound crazy but Trails is my favorite series of all time now 😅
It's so good! I just did a full series replay myself.
Turning from JRPGs to western RPGs, my nomination for a worse sequel is Dungeon Siege II. Though I believe some prefer it.
I find it surprising that you can't fully enjoy Chrono Cross anymore because the way I've always put it is that as a standalone game, it is one of the most interesting JRPGs of its era and bafflingly hasn't paved the future for the genre with its unique and innovative systems and designs, such as the speech thing that each NPC has which, sure, does lead to plenty of idiosyncrasy, but also completely circumvents a somewhat common issue of characters feeling like they don't belong or don't contribute to cutscenes unless it's their personal cutscenes
That said, as a sequel it is pretty lackluster, its ties to Chrono Trigger are absurdly loose and only add confusion to an already confusing plot, to the point that they could be removed from the game with relative ease and almost no impact in the story and its systems for all their innovations are also a very big departure from the original own unique systems (which also haven't really paved the future of the genre...) and, most of all, game structure, with the two worlds dynamic being interesting and put to some good use, but much less impactful and inventive than the time traveling shenanigans of the original, with some places having close to no differences while others are vastly different for no discernible reason
Maybe the reason you cannot enjoy it anymore is due to your own nostalgic love for Chrono Trigger blinding you to what Chrono Cross brings to the table in the light of what it could or should have been, or perhaps its attempts to tying back to the original as well as the "nonsense JRPG plot let's kill god syndrome" that's only lessening nowadays just make the game plot too hard to follow for its own good and, devoid of the curiosity and surprise of discovery, fail to entice the correct parts of your brain
Looooooving this list! Great video!
Thanks Paige! This was a fun one.
“Daddy’s got work to do!”
I don’t know how you come up with so many great video ideas, but this is another fantastic one!
Thank you for that!
Thank goodness for cheats that unlock it early.
@@chronicallychic it does make sense for that reason, but still, it's sad. could've gone better about it
@@Patrick-bn5rp I did not use that cheat, but thinking back, I probably should've LOL
And I think Chrono Cross was amazing when it released; I found it deeply affecting at that time. But I do find it very difficult to return to in modern times.
The last third of chrono cross is what makes the game, especially story wise. In my recent replay once I got to that part my thoughts on the game completely changed
Yeah, I kinda remember that being the case for me back in the day, and I really want to get to that part...
Do you, Branden, take this gem to be your gem, for better or worse, through one sequel or a hundred or maybe even a spiritual successor?
Yes yes a thousand times yes! 👰
@@JustTheGems 🥰
I believe I've said this under one of your other videos, but I definitely strongly disagree on Xillia 2. It's still one of my fave Tales games of all time. I just really liked all the time/dimension stuff. There were lots of strong and heartwarming story moments in there with the new characters and plot points. I think you can even argue -- hear me out -- they made Ludger silent so as not to hear similarities between his voice and a certain other character in the game (although the visual cues should be obvious to most, they won't be obvious to everyone).
Yes I will defend this game to the death as well as your right to dislike it.
If you can stomach Yuri's whole... thing... then yeah, you definitely should, it's pretty darn fantastic.
I’m with you on Chrono Cross. I want to love it, played through it once, started a few other times, and finally decided eh: it’s an ok game, but not enough for me to rebuy with the radical dreamers edition.
Good list, sir!!! I’m intrigued by some of these!!!
That's a pretty good comparison actually. Quirky sequel to untouchable masterpiece.
Not gonna lie, I’ve never even heard of Tales of Xillia but your description of the protag’s voicework being hidden behind new game plus is absolutely bonkers. Who on earth makes that decision.
that was a massive L from the series. why not just voice the chara then?
Ludger wasn't voiced in your 1st playthrough due to a spoiler reason. I get where your coming from, but that's the reason.
Yeah, in retrospect I understand it (there's a story reason, but it's a flimsy one in my opinion). But still.
I wouldn’t even care if I disagreed with you on every game in this video. The thumbnail alone earns you a like.
Haha, like I told Zoo on Twitter, I will go to great lengths for a dumb pun. 😂
I'm very glad I got to play it, just to experience the start of the xeno series (I can now move on to saga then blade)
And it definitely left a lasting impression on me, im just sad it wasn't a purely good one.
Thanks for the recommendation.... I think lol
I say props to you for giving it a shot. It's such an old game, and it's easy for me to admit that I can overlook a lot of those issues because of that -- issues that I wouldn't be so kind to a modern game if it had them.
In Charley we trust! 🙌🏻
Totally agree, Berseria did the whole dark story thing to perfection.
I love Chrono cross and over the years it's become one of the games I go back and replay most. It is very different from trigger though which is my favorite game ever. I would never try to talk someone into liking it, you ether do or don't.
Yeah, it's somewhat polarizing. I don't even think that I dislike it, I just... I don't know. It's complicated.
Both of those sequels are DEFINITELY worth your time
Thanks to my cousin he gave me his PS2 games so I only have shadow hearts from the new world and haven't played it yet but don't know if I should if I haven't played the other.
I believe From the New World is not really connected to the others in the series, so I think you'd be okay.
@JustTheGems sweet when I can get the time maybe I'll give it a shot. I need to save up and work for Mario Thousand year door on the switch such a life of an adult haha.
@@RikuXRoxas2514 The eternal struggle...🫠
@JustTheGems haha I work a basic job that cut my hours and pays me trash haha gotta love Canada eh
my thing with Chrono Cross is, if you go into it and play it "as a game" its very good. if you go into it as a "chrono trigger sequel" you will be disappointed.
Dang... you disliked Ludger so much, you called him booger @19:40... nice. For #1 & #2, like you said, I don't think either are inherently BAD games, but they both were REALLY riding coattails. I can't personally speak on #3 or #4 of your bad sequels, as I never played them... but I CAN be thankful for the eventual xenoblade games, they're one of my favorite.
Yeah, I really want them to remake the Xenosaga games using all the knowledge they've gained from making Xenoblade, I think that would be fantastic!
The bloopers are my favorite part of your videos!😂
I figured you’d like those…😂
I prefer covenant aswell but I dont think Its a better game across the board.
Oh man, I completely forgot to mention the debt system in Xillia 2! Dang, yes. The debt system...😬
The outtakes are great, and good picks. I get the Chrono Cross angle, but I was in a weird boat where I player Chrono Cross first. I still haven't finished Chrono Trigger . . .
Yeah, that's gotta give you a different perspective a bit if you started with Cross.
Chrono cross is an amazing game, if you don’t consider it a sequel. How can you ever get out of the shadow of the greatest JRPG ever made!
Very, very true.
@@JustTheGems yeah I mostly blame the English language for not coming up with an easier way to say “not as good as-“
Great list, I agree with everything you have picked.
I'm going to make a point to at least try the older Legend of Heroes games at some point. I have the first two currently, at least.
Better: Octopath II, Ni No Kuni II, Ryza 2, Trails in the Sky SC
Worse: Xillia 2 I agree, Pokemon USUM, Breath of Fire II, ugh I actually think FF Rebirth is worse than Remake and I didn't like Remake lol
Suikoden 2 is better than 1 in every way but the original is still my favourite game of all time
I know how that can be. I can look at a game and be like, "That's objectively better" but still have that sort of emotional fondness for my favorite.
Chrono Cross could be a 10/10 game and it'll still be worse to Chrono Trigger. I like many aspects of it but it'll never be a 'go-to' JRPG.
It's true, it's got the most unfair situation of being associated with freakin Chrono Trigger.
BoF: D4th is never gettting another play through
CC is not a sequel.
Yes, most movies these days are sequels, and yes, they are mostly bad.
😂I hate that it's true.
I agree, if Dragon Quarter was presented differently, it might have been more accepted.
Chrono Cross is better than trigger 🤷🏼♂️
The only complaint anyone ever has is "it doesnt reference Trigger enough"
I am a little biased, having played Cross before Trigger, but without knowing the two were even supposed to be connected, I enjoyed one immensely more than the other.
Chrono Cross is better. ChronOVER TriggeRATED is one of the most overrated games of all time.
whoa whoa whoa now! 👀
@@JustTheGems 😂
Just imo of course ;)
I would LOVE to see the Xenosaga trilogy and the Shadow Hearts games get reboots or remasters. Loved the judgment wheel in SH. Also, time limits in rpgs...not a fan.
I guess most earlier Atelier games aren't for you then 😔
Like they said most atelier games, but I agree, time limits tend to be annoying. The only game that I finished with that was Atelier Escha and logy, the time limit there is very manageable.
@@arikari3672 I loved Escha and Logy, the stamp completion system was very fun to me! And as you say, yep, the time limit is manageable
If you haven't seen it, keep an eye out for Penny Blood. It's not an actual Shadow Hearts reboot, but it's from the creator and it's a more or less spiritual successor.
Anyone who says Breath of Fire 5 is bad is a dork, it's one of the coolest games ever made
I really want to give it a full, fair shot, because even just playing it to grab footage I was like, actually, this feels kinda cool.
A sequel to Harvestella... We can dream, at least......
