The scenes with Taash, especially the struggle session scenes, are going to have the opposite effect that the devs are trying to accomplish here. No one wants to be pontificated to or preached at, especially in such an obnoxious and condescending manner. I find the struggle session scenes with Isobela and Bellara honestly, nefarious. If a friend or spouse tells someone that an apology isn't enough and they must punish themselves physically to atone, that is an abusive relationship, no matter how you cut it. The fact that this game is promoting that as a good thing is beyond disturbing.

The problem with anyone trying to argue that games such as Veilguard are examples of "woke games being able to succeed and have their own market" is that this only seems to be plausible with games that are attached to already established franchises. If it isn't leeching off of an already successful franchise you end up with absolutely forgettable titles such as Flintlock, Unknown 9, Concord, etc. So that doesn't even hold up under the slightest scrutiny. In truth one of the hardest parts of this particular discourse is even trying to remember most of these failures. They're as numerous as they are forgettable and impotent.

Look, I admire the lengths you've gone to in order to try to remain objective and professional in the face of some of the most overtly partisan reporting I've ever seen. So, fuck it, tag me in. The platform might not like it if you say the quiet part out loud, so I'll do it. The game is a disgrace to the Dragon Age name. This colossal hundred million dollar failure was mismanaged from the jump, and the blame lies squarely with the people at the top and the legacy media echo chamber that is _still_ propping them up.

Dragon Age Failguard is a return to form if you’re too young to have played any of the previous games, even 2. Or if the form you’re referring to is their last couple games.
I would just like to point out that even after being love bombed, Veilguard ONLY managed a 74% on Steam. That's what "Mostly Positive" is. Normally when something is being review bombed positively or negatively you see a HUGE swing one way or the other - You see it's either overwhelmingly negative or overwhelmingly positive - but the fact of the matter is, even with a concerted effort to make the game look better than it is via user reviews on Steam - which, by the way, can get purged or removed - the game still can't get better than a 74%; effectively, a 7/10. Now, is a 7/10 necessarily bad though? No! Of course not! A 7/10 is a decidedly above average game, and some of my very own favorite games are at or below a 7, but when you consider that people are making the effort to make the game look good? A 7/10 says a lot more than you think it does.
Representation by itself is not bad. The problem is if its forced especially if coupled with bad writing. In the witcher 3 there are also LGBTQ elements. The hunter Mislav is gay and so he calls himself a freak. Im not saying gays should be treated as freaks or that they are freaks, simply that the use of that word perfectly aligns with the nature of the world they are in which is famished, war-torn, poor and unforgiving. It wouldn't make sense for him to be out and proud and for the people to be accepting of who he was.
True. But nowadays it has to be glorified and treated with kid's gloves, realistic brutal depictions like those are not allowed. And instead of just NOT doing them, since it doesn't fit any other way, -- or work for their paychecks and find another way to integrate it -- they take the worst route possible just to break immersion by virtue signaling and imposing morality lessons or unfitting propaganda that shatters the 4th wall.

When modern politics and ideologies gets forcefed down your throat in a dark fantasy is how you butcher your legacy. The leadup from DA:O to Inquisition, where your actions affected what happend during Inquisition felt rewarding (even though Inquisition was not the best, but okay+) and the last DLC in DA:I where you could swear to hunt down Solas for his actions. And next to nothing of this is reflected in DA:V. They just upright butchered Solas, dumped in a new John Doe that has nothing to do with Solas / Varric and whatnot and Rook just knows everything. Idonteven. I was looking forward to exploring Tevinter. But I am going to leave Dragon Age as a finished franchise at the end of Inquisition for me.
This is why I haven't bought a AAA title since Elden Ring and it's DLC. Indie devs who put more care into their writing and representation without shoving it down your throats deserve my money more. Also I still think Sweet Baby Inc sounds like the name of a dev team who makes oddly specific kink NSFW visual novels to sell on Steam.

I didn't play the game, but I watched some clips. Got so much second-hand embarrassment from them... At times, it feels like devs/writers have put their own personal experiences (or traumas) into the game, but the problem is that most people can't relate to that and just see it as cringe.

Meanwhile you go on Steam reviews and you see a good bunch of reviews who say "combat fun dialogue bad" or "fun game bad dragon age game" this is AC odyssey/origins all over again...
That's the thing about this game - if it was a completely new title that was marketed as an action game with light RPG elements then the reception would've been much warmer. As a story-driven RPG that should be THE culmination of series it's beyond mediocre

The BETA for Monster Hunter Wilds broke 250k concurrent players this past weekend. It was just a little taste of the main game and let you fart around in the first area and hunt 1 or 2 monsters with basic starting gear. It had more than double the peak players for the newest Dragon Age game. Do you think Monster Hunter is a bigger IP than Dragon Age? I never did before, but I do now.
I just finished DAO again. The plan was to go all the way to Inquistion and covering the supplementary content that I missed during my last run. But with this DAV debacle I needed a break from Dragon Age. Because when playing DAO I would be reminded of the potential that DAV had which Bioware ruined so easily. Breaks my heart to think that the legacy of 3 great games and 16 years of worldbuilding just went down the drain right in front of our eyes. So, before continuing to play, read and watch all the good stuff that remains of Dragon Age, I'm taking a break to get into the Baldur's Gate franchise starting from BG1. Ah when Bioware games were written by writers who were passionate about storytelling and creating an immersive experience instead of just a manufactured product. What I can say right now is that BG1 is the perfect game for you if you're a D&D fan but don't have friends who play D&D.
The problem is that fundamentally the woke mentally is extremely excluding of opposite viewpoints... so these companies just end up creating heavy handed propaganda even if it wasn't intended to be one initially. I think non woke devs are better at portraying nuance on these "issues" way better than the woke devs. Since anything and anyone who opposes the left ideology is often portraied as evil by these woke devs both in the games they create and the way they interact on social media. So unless one is on board with everything on the long list of ideological standpoints, they are viewed as an enemy unworthy of being reasoned with.

I am bisexual. I live in an relationship for 16 years now, and 7 years ago, we agreed on trying out being polyamourous, wich actually worked out really well. Yet I can't put into words how much I hate modern progressivism in media. How forced it is, how safe and fake it is. How desperate it is to put these things down our throats first, instead of caring for integrity in worldbuilding. I mean, how much does a discussion about nonbinary people fit in a fantasy setting like Dragon Age? I don't mind progressive topics in media. Heck, I'd LOVE seeing them tackled by actually good writers, portraying characters in a realistic way with realistic struggles (and without shaming the bad white straight man into the ground). But as it stands now, stuff like this makes me ashamed of actually coming out, as I fear being put into the same pot with these people, causing me to feel the urge to write paragraphs like this, distancing me from them. In a perfect world, this shouldn't be needed.

The Morrowind soundtrack is really just a cherry on top. A few corrections though: games have always been political, it's not a new thing. If someone starts saying it's a recent invention, they were either too young to remember the political context of the older games, or those politics were "default" to their demographics, and went unnoticed. It really depends on how you execute it. The Veilguard is straight up a political Isekai in regards to how they address the issues and how they bend the world around them to fit the narrative. Introducing Krem in DAI was a bit cringy, but overall understandable - we know Tevinter apparently has very rigid gender roles (also shown with Dorian), and if a young girl like Krem does not fully fit in, she does not have an option to be androgynous - she has to transition, because there's only two options. It's a nice way to show worldbuilding. Once told his story, you can also react positively, show confusion or show disagreement/misunderstanding. Which can be fitting depending on your character's backstory and philosophy. On the other hand, the nonbinary arc in DATV is executed horribly. It can't happen in the setting they put it in (why does Taash has a mother if they're of Qun? They famously don't have mothers, which makes their family Tal Vashoth, yet there is so much talk of Qun happening), it's stuffed with modern Twitter terms, it doesn't have proper explanation. It doesn't comment on anything, it doesn't allow the player to react in any other way than complete support, it doesn't try to be subtle or masterful. When you see there's a trans woman and a nonbinary man in charge, it really just becomes clear that it's some sort of a pronoun fantasy that is rushed and inserted for the sake of someone's very personal satisfaction.
Upper Eschelon had a great video about this, but he claimed that the game is a commercial success. It's the only real thing in his video that I took an issue with.

I am enjoying Stellar Blade, a fun uncomplicated game, to tell you the truth I am not even thinking about the sexual stuff. It’s just a good game, and simple! We don’t have that anymore, every game needs to be a masterpiece that changes people’s lives, they end up being total trash instead.
Some of these newer developers and writers demonstrate that they don't understand what made the source material attractive and popular with its dedicated fan bases. It rose above things like gender and race, and instead appealed to something deeper like friendship, love, dedication and sacrifice.
The only way I manage to cope with this, is that the change in art dirrection was already bad in inquisition, and half of the horrific creatures from origin had had desapear and the addition of exotic animal and god knows how many types of colorfull dragon do you need (weird to say for a "dragon" age game, I know) wouldn't replace that. But at least the hardest difficulty had me going through the generic scenario. I also didn't really liked most of the companions in inquisition but at least there where trying not to have the same archetypes as in Origins and I can respect that. Now I have no difficulty, even less horror (still here at times, but cartoony) and companions that I genuily preffered if they didn't talk.

The problem with anyone trying to argue that games such as Veilguard are examples of "woke games being able to succeed and have their own market" is that this only seems to be plausible with games that are attached to already established franchises.
If it isn't leeching off of an already successful franchise you end up with absolutely forgettable titles such as Flintlock, Unknown 9, Concord, etc. So that doesn't even hold up under the slightest scrutiny. In truth one of the hardest parts of this particular discourse is even trying to remember most of these failures. They're as numerous as they are forgettable and impotent.

I would just like to point out that even after being love bombed, Veilguard ONLY managed a 74% on Steam. That's what "Mostly Positive" is. Normally when something is being review bombed positively or negatively you see a HUGE swing one way or the other - You see it's either overwhelmingly negative or overwhelmingly positive - but the fact of the matter is, even with a concerted effort to make the game look better than it is via user reviews on Steam - which, by the way, can get purged or removed - the game still can't get better than a 74%; effectively, a 7/10.
Now, is a 7/10 necessarily bad though? No! Of course not! A 7/10 is a decidedly above average game, and some of my very own favorite games are at or below a 7, but when you consider that people are making the effort to make the game look good? A 7/10 says a lot more than you think it does.
Representation by itself is not bad. The problem is if its forced especially if coupled with bad writing.
In the witcher 3 there are also LGBTQ elements. The hunter Mislav is gay and so he calls himself a freak. Im not saying gays should be treated as freaks or that they are freaks, simply that the use of that word perfectly aligns with the nature of the world they are in which is famished, war-torn, poor and unforgiving. It wouldn't make sense for him to be out and proud and for the people to be accepting of who he was.
True. But nowadays it has to be glorified and treated with kid's gloves, realistic brutal depictions like those are not allowed. And instead of just NOT doing them, since it doesn't fit any other way, -- or work for their paychecks and find another way to integrate it -- they take the worst route possible just to break immersion by virtue signaling and imposing morality lessons or unfitting propaganda that shatters the 4th wall.

The leadup from DA:O to Inquisition, where your actions affected what happend during Inquisition felt rewarding (even though Inquisition was not the best, but okay+) and the last DLC in DA:I where you could swear to hunt down Solas for his actions. And next to nothing of this is reflected in DA:V. They just upright butchered Solas, dumped in a new John Doe that has nothing to do with Solas / Varric and whatnot and Rook just knows everything. Idonteven.
I was looking forward to exploring Tevinter. But I am going to leave Dragon Age as a finished franchise at the end of Inquisition for me.
This is why I haven't bought a AAA title since Elden Ring and it's DLC. Indie devs who put more care into their writing and representation without shoving it down your throats deserve my money more. Also I still think Sweet Baby Inc sounds like the name of a dev team who makes oddly specific kink NSFW visual novels to sell on Steam.

The BETA for Monster Hunter Wilds broke 250k concurrent players this past weekend. It was just a little taste of the main game and let you fart around in the first area and hunt 1 or 2 monsters with basic starting gear. It had more than double the peak players for the newest Dragon Age game. Do you think Monster Hunter is a bigger IP than Dragon Age? I never did before, but I do now.
I just finished DAO again. The plan was to go all the way to Inquistion and covering the supplementary content that I missed during my last run. But with this DAV debacle I needed a break from Dragon Age. Because when playing DAO I would be reminded of the potential that DAV had which Bioware ruined so easily. Breaks my heart to think that the legacy of 3 great games and 16 years of worldbuilding just went down the drain right in front of our eyes.
So, before continuing to play, read and watch all the good stuff that remains of Dragon Age, I'm taking a break to get into the Baldur's Gate franchise starting from BG1. Ah when Bioware games were written by writers who were passionate about storytelling and creating an immersive experience instead of just a manufactured product. What I can say right now is that BG1 is the perfect game for you if you're a D&D fan but don't have friends who play D&D.
The problem is that fundamentally the woke mentally is extremely excluding of opposite viewpoints... so these companies just end up creating heavy handed propaganda even if it wasn't intended to be one initially. I think non woke devs are better at portraying nuance on these "issues" way better than the woke devs. Since anything and anyone who opposes the left ideology is often portraied as evil by these woke devs both in the games they create and the way they interact on social media. So unless one is on board with everything on the long list of ideological standpoints, they are viewed as an enemy unworthy of being reasoned with.
Gotta get the activists out. Allegedly Marvel has been trying to do it quietly over the past few months so that in a couple of years the movies can be hopefully better... but sometimes all it takes is a couple in high positions to f*ck up a project.

Heck, I'd LOVE seeing them tackled by actually good writers, portraying characters in a realistic way with realistic struggles (and without shaming the bad white straight man into the ground). But as it stands now, stuff like this makes me ashamed of actually coming out, as I fear being put into the same pot with these people, causing me to feel the urge to write paragraphs like this, distancing me from them. In a perfect world, this shouldn't be needed.

A few corrections though: games have always been political, it's not a new thing. If someone starts saying it's a recent invention, they were either too young to remember the political context of the older games, or those politics were "default" to their demographics, and went unnoticed.
It really depends on how you execute it. The Veilguard is straight up a political Isekai in regards to how they address the issues and how they bend the world around them to fit the narrative.
Introducing Krem in DAI was a bit cringy, but overall understandable - we know Tevinter apparently has very rigid gender roles (also shown with Dorian), and if a young girl like Krem does not fully fit in, she does not have an option to be androgynous - she has to transition, because there's only two options. It's a nice way to show worldbuilding. Once told his story, you can also react positively, show confusion or show disagreement/misunderstanding. Which can be fitting depending on your character's backstory and philosophy.
On the other hand, the nonbinary arc in DATV is executed horribly. It can't happen in the setting they put it in (why does Taash has a mother if they're of Qun? They famously don't have mothers, which makes their family Tal Vashoth, yet there is so much talk of Qun happening), it's stuffed with modern Twitter terms, it doesn't have proper explanation. It doesn't comment on anything, it doesn't allow the player to react in any other way than complete support, it doesn't try to be subtle or masterful. When you see there's a trans woman and a nonbinary man in charge, it really just becomes clear that it's some sort of a pronoun fantasy that is rushed and inserted for the sake of someone's very personal satisfaction.

Upper Eschelon had a great video about this, but he claimed that the game is a commercial success. It's the only real thing in his video that I took an issue with.

I am enjoying Stellar Blade, a fun uncomplicated game, to tell you the truth I am not even thinking about the sexual stuff. It’s just a good game, and simple! We don’t have that anymore, every game needs to be a masterpiece that changes people’s lives, they end up being total trash instead.

Some of these newer developers and writers demonstrate that they don't understand what made the source material attractive and popular with its dedicated fan bases. It rose above things like gender and race, and instead appealed to something deeper like friendship, love, dedication and sacrifice.
Not even factions at this point, a journalist or activist will become a troll or a hater depending on what they see.
The only way I manage to cope with this, is that the change in art dirrection was already bad in inquisition, and half of the horrific creatures from origin had had desapear and the addition of exotic animal and god knows how many types of colorfull dragon do you need (weird to say for a "dragon" age game, I know) wouldn't replace that. But at least the hardest difficulty had me going through the generic scenario.
I also didn't really liked most of the companions in inquisition but at least there where trying not to have the same archetypes as in Origins and I can respect that.
Now I have no difficulty, even less horror (still here at times, but cartoony) and companions that I genuily preffered if they didn't talk.
Put a de-esser on your voice over to reduce sibilance. :)
