This recording was done as a Tribute to the Spinners. Raphael wasn't trying to copy the song for his own benefit, he doesn't have to. He has his own hits, plus he's too talented to have to do it. He was asked to sing it as a Tribute to one of his favorite groups.
Awesome version! Raphael is underrated. It's a shame we don't hear music anymore. Big business has killed radio and everyone's plugged in to headphones. Sad day.
I partially agree, it's not like back in the days. However there are good radio stations, if not on the FM/AM band, then online. And yes, this guy deserves more credit!
Soul Music brought us together , we were called Brother and Sister , the greeting was What’s Happening , we had get permission from a sisters father and her brothers to date her, disrespecting her cost you a toe to toe fist fight . Those days are long gone . I still live by the old law . 👍🙃
I've seen some people saying that Ray shouldn't have covered this. I don't agree. At first, I didn't know what to expect (because Raphael is not a rangey singer), but I love it. It's interesting to hear your favorite artists tackle your favorite songs by other artists. It's just another great version I can listen to. Plus, it's a little longer, whereas the original one ends a little too soon for me. Someone else also said that they can hear Stevie Wonder on this track, even though he isn't singing. Totally agree, but there are also parts that don't sound particularly Stevie Wonder-ish. I actually quite like that about it. In any case, G.C. Cameron sang the ever-loving CRAP outta this song. He sings in like 3 different voices on this ish. That's crazy.
I'm just discovering this version on 03/02/2019. I like it! But the original with GC Cameron on the lead is still my favorite. Probably the reason the song sounds like Stevie Wonder to some is because Stevie wrote it.
Love the live band sound to this! Raphael worked this! And those drums ... EXCELLENT!!! Reminds me of my late dad who could get down on the drums just like this.
It’s now 20 February 2021 we’re in lockdown, I’m 70 loved the original Spinners version as a teen, This is amazing especially that bass drummer it’s killing me.it’s the lift I needed.
One of my favorite songs by the Spinners, Raphael Saadiq I love your rendition, music doesn't move me like it did back in the day.....I gotta give it to musicians like Raphael whom I love, thank you thank you thank you!!!!:) Echoclategirl52
I'm a big spinners fan and every time I hear this song I remember the first time I heard it was back in Scotland bought a tamla CD riding around the park on my bike listening to this song. I think of you Billy Henderson every time I play the spinners.
Few covers manage to recreate - let alone match - the tone, spirit and enthusiasm of the originals. But holey moley, this bloke does it and more - Saadiq is an absolute genius. A fabulous version - top stuff
The Codfather I swear they play "The Gauntlet" episode on TV all the time. I kept hearing it so I typed in "it's a shame" and thank GOODNESS I found it.
That is absolutely wonderful Raphael Saadiq...loved the Detroit Spinners original since purchased as a teenager in the late 60's...such a wonderful set of harmonies and bursts of pure emotion...top notch dear chap ;o)
20 February 2021 as a teen I danced and dated to this tune OH MY GOD how I miss those days. I’m 70 and this drummer is killing me, I hope you are well.
ok I just heard this for the first time. I am a huge Raphael Siddiq fan, and on top of that we share the same birthdate (not birthday). His Tony Toni Tone work is untouchable; Lucy Pearl Dance Tonight is a special song; his Al Green tribute on Thinking of You is amazing. That all being said, there is no earthly way that Raphael is singing the GC Cameron high note hook (...why do you use me, try to confuse me..."!) in this song!!! Absolutely no way! I was listening to the original hit and a couple of other GC Cameron solo versions before I found this song and the high versions sound like a GC dub. He even comes into to the tune to soon on his last section...even GC could not do that...Just listen to original song, then the extended song, then to Raphael's version...you will hear the difference. I still like this version a lot, but please
Raphael saadiq first song I heard him sing 🎶 brilliant then thankfully 😅 all the old tunes are on the www tune my favvy now is SOMETIMES ❤️❤️ xx it’s a shame they don’t have tunes like this now 😘
A terrific version of a classic 1970 Motown cut. In the UK we called them 'The Detroit Spinners' as their releases increased as there was, back then, another group called The Spinners which confused things a little. This could be straight out of Detroit with all those fabulous releases that are still current here in 'Northern Soul' clubs up and down the country. Dennis Coffey is playing one of those guitar licks on the original Spinners version. The Motown sound was evolving and The Jackson Five had just hit the charts with a different Motown Sound. What an era for great American music. Check out 'I'll always love you' by The Spinners for a real treat. The harmonies and production make my hairs stand on end. And dare I mention another song by them called 'Sweet Thing' which is another good one :-)
Loved this tune since I was a teen, I’m 70 now it’s Saturday night 20 February 2021 We’re in lockdown and I found this song TONIGHT. A glass of Southern Comfort sound up and that bass drum is incredible OH MY GOD. ITS KILLING ME.

Chuck D said this was the most "slept on" album this decade!!
