    My 22 KLR is a beast on the twisties, sits solid on the road.
    After doing an airbox modification so I have positive air pressure the torque is amazing in top gear, overtaking is no problem

    • @adventurebikesaustralia7627
      @adventurebikesaustralia7627  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Good stuff! What was the airbox mod that you did?

    • @shanewilliams7742
      @shanewilliams7742 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      I capped the intake at the rear of the box because it was just dragging in dirty air from the rear of the bike.
      I then neatly carved a nice sized opening in the airboxes service door along with a nice slit in the outer side cover, then I made packing around the new intake with some stiff leather and pot rivots so when the side cover was placed back on the air is forced into the box 👍
      I got the idea from an Australian dude that done the same to his Africa twin.
      You may know of him, he calls that bike the 'War Horse

    • @adventurebikesaustralia7627
      @adventurebikesaustralia7627  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah, I saw that one. I’ll have to go back and have another look. Would it lower the intake to a point where you’d be worried about water crossings?

    • @shanewilliams7742
      @shanewilliams7742 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@adventurebikesaustralia7627 it has lowered it slightly but I think if I was in a situation where the water is up around the high end of the engine I shouldn't be attempting it on the heavy KLR anyways, but up around the bottom of the engine I would have no doubts water would not get in.
      But absolutely so much more torque than the restricted version and thats just my first modification.
      I have got about 6000 km's on it now, love it to bits offroad because its like a tractor and its awesome on the twisty hilly bitumen roads.
      The things I dont like are straight roads, its abit boring on the KLR and it doesn't corner well on loose gravel roads, the back end stays to planted which in turn makes the front feel weird because you are then just relying on the steering to get you around the corner without the aid of some rear end drift

    Honest representation of this bike. I would rate it a little higher than you have. I’m 53 6’3 and just shy of 100 kegs. This bike has a very forgiving nature and is well suited for someone who wants a bit of everything. I went for a ride with some young guys last weekend and when we stopped for lunch they were amazed that I was never far behind and sometimes breathing down their neck. They were on enduros and it made me pretty happy with my purchase.
    A bit of a key though is to get on the bike and practice key skills such as obstacles and power slides. I can lift the front wheel when needed but I think I would really push the envelope with the rear suspension on a large obstacle. Great video
    Thanks

  • @Kickaha83
    @Kickaha83 26 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    The biggest problem I see with the gen 3 is the additional weight over the gen 2, last year I did Melbourne - Cairn return on a gen 2 including back roads and dirt tracks where possible but that did include a couple of 800 km days on the highway, suspension is really the only thing that could do with an upgrade, a couple of weeks ago it was an 1800km trip around the Vic high country and it handled everything it got pointed at, 410km range before reserve, power is "adequate", only mod from stock is an extended gear lever

    I had a 2005 gen 2. You talked about the front end being unstable on the highway. I found that removing the hand guards made a huge difference. I took them off in the summer and put them back on when the temps dropped. I liked the bike just for riding to work and back. Otherwise, not so much. I live in the Platte River Valley 16:46 braska next to the sandhills, so most offroad riding is in sand, lots of sand, and the KLR sucks in sand. After putting on knobbies, its performance only slightly improved. Due to back injuries, long distant adventure rides were out, so I grew bored with it and traded it for a Ninja 650.

    If anyone has any doubts that the KLR is a good bike, they need only watch the Emig ride videos here on the tube. Jeff Emig (a former pro supercross racer here in the USA) uses a KLR to lead the ride and rides it hard with zero issues. Adding to that, I'm a former pro-am MX rider as well as intermediate enduro and supermoto racer and I've had a 2012 and 2018 KLR that I rode super hard for over 30,000 miles each and never had an issue (sold the 2012 to make the mistake of buying a ring for the wrong girl and sold the 2018 to give the DRZ a shot). The KLR is a 80 20 on road biased bike.if your going to ride anymore off road than that get a DR650.make sure your rear wheel is squared up with the frame and it will go straight down the road at any speed.I use measurements to the center of the axle bolt to align the rear wheel, not the marks on the adjusters, they have some play in them.the valves are tight from the factory,I re shimmed mine at 2000 miles and picked up about 5hp according to the seat of my pants.mitas e07+ will be your best, longest lasting tire for what the bike is made for.if you think you need an off road nobby you need a different bike, not a 500 lb klr for mostly off road.RK o ring mid priced chain still looks new and hasn't needed adjustment yet with 10,000 miles on it, factory chain was slinging rollers at 9000.it doesn't like cross winds.I lost fuel mileage with 16t front sprocket, your results may vary.I ride daily and the factory battery is 2.5 years old and still going strong.I run rotella t4 for 17.00 a gallon at Walmart and change it every 3500 miles or so.I change the filter every other change.Im at 19000 miles and it's about time for brake pads.so far no real issues with the bike.I also loosen the doohickey and rap it with a rubber mallet when I change oil.I can testify that it will do 78-80 mph according to the speedometer,on the freeway all day long with no problem and tops out at around 102 indicated with a tailwind and me on it AFTER the valve adjustment, before was around 96mph and I weigh 155lbs soaking wet.mine has the fuel pump recall but I haven't had it done yet.I have many bikes and the KLR does what it was made to do, mostly on road,a gravel road or well kept trail from time to time,if you try to do what it isn't made for you will be disappointed.I have all three generations of the fjr for going fast and long distance riding,I have a DR 650 for more serious off road but not serious enough to load up the truck and trailer,a two stroke kx 250 for serious off roading,jumps, wheelies etc.,a DRZ400SM for hoonigan type riding and the KLR for all day every day commuting, going to the store, running errands and to explore gravel roads I never been down before and stuff like that.get the right bike for the job and don't waste your time putting big nobbys and trying to soup up the KLR,it will only get stuck, fall over,wear you out and go slow.

      @adventurebikesaustralia7627 On 8/2/24, my '23 KLR650, with only 2.7k miles on it, stopped running, 7 miles away from home and left me stranded in the local Post Office parking lot. I loaded my KLR on a trailer and took it to the dealership 80 miles away. The fuel pump failed. My Kawasaki warranty covered the entire repair bill. $479 for the new fuel pump, plus labor, ended up being $675 total. I was without my motorcycle for 3 full weeks and picked it up from the dealership shop on 8/23.
      Since I have had my KLR650 back, with a new fuel pump on it, it no longer dies when I try to rev the engine immediately after starting it. As I understand it, there was a recall on certain '22 models, because of fuel pump issues.
      I still love my KLR650! Kawasaki treated me good. Although, being without my motorcycle, for three weeks, was kind of a drag.
      I only have the One Year Kawasaki Factory Warranty. My warranty will expire on March 29, 2025. Luckily, for me, the fuel pumped failed while still under warranty.

    Comfortable for old farts, good for dirt roads, not a serious off-road bike. Not too heavy, but NOT stupid heavy like some massive adventure bikes. Was also used by the military. Good street bike but not great. I guess if your done with serious off-road stuff, but just want an all arounder, it's outstanding. Good price point also. Sit on one in the show room and you will see.

    Too bad the EFI reliability is questionable. "Not a single recall...."

      Yeah, that was a small issue with a small number of bikes in the grand scheme of things.
