- After 7 months of non-stop work, my winter home is nearly weather-proof. And none too soon as the season's first snow falls while I am ripping cedar lumber for the siding.

Hi RW, I'm a 73 years old man who successfully loves repairing all sorts of things, here is a suggestion to easily clean your sap clogged blades : ethyl alcohol (ethanol) at least 70% which, I found through years, is the best solvent for the sap ! It's good for all sorts of blades, hacksaws, axes, trimmers etc. ! Say hi to your dad, he seems so proud of you and it shows !
SUGGESTION - cut the vertical foundation log tops that are exposed to an angle so they don't hold water on top and rot faster.
Seriously... gotta do SOMETHING while you're here... might as well rip lumber. In the end you'll end up with something REALLY NICE. Some day you might only be able to rock on the porch... sipping grewl... and you'll be so grateful for all the work you're doing now.

3D print a larger foot print base for your router. That way it gives you something to hold on without getting your finger so close to the bit.

Dad was really PROUD of you! I love that. Hey, just a real easy and cheap idea for rain-proofing... Get a tube of the cheapest 100% silicone caulk you can find. Mix that 50-50 with 'Naphtha'. Now take that jacket you were wearing today, and brush that mixture on it. Soak it. Then hang it up and let it dry and cure. When you are done you'll have a 100% waterproof jacket that doesn't weigh a ton, and that moves just as easily as the original jacket. Probably won't 'breathe as well. LOL But if waterproof is what you are going for, it actually works, and feels good in the wearing of it. Not restricting, like beeswax mixtures can do. (The original 'tin cloth'.) A better starting point might be a really lightweight, (oversize by a couple sizes), nylon windbreaker with a hood, from goodwill. Then you can just toss that over anything else you might wear. 300 dollar rain jacket for the cost of an old jacket and maybe 20 bucks in materials...

Awesome that your dad came by to help, nice to see him on film of course! Brother, you really should consider a wood burner for your heat. It'll make your propane go that much further, and even as cheap,stingy and miserly that you are, you make enough scrap that a wood stove makes a lot of sense.
Obviously there are a thousand tools to make life simple & time effective. Install a fence on your sawhorses for the saw and just clamp each board down. That way you don't have to take time to follow a line. Line up the marks on the board your cutting at each end and cut. No chalk, no slowly following your cut on the chalk line, and you will save massive time to do more work while your weather is permitting progress. Spend a half hour to save days....
Few screws, few boards, and a few clamps and your golden.
Your fence will (since your cutting 3/4" boards) will be set 3/4" higher than the board you attach to lay each board you intend to cut.
I tried to consider your available materials and I think it would work for you. You will have a ton more wood to rip going forward and you could set up a table like this easily/quickly. Nice progress bro... I appreciate the content!

Gday again Ringy, got a suggestion for you in regards to cutting your siding. Only chalk one edge. Cut it. Do a pile, then put the little black guide that came with that saw on, and cut the rest of the other sides using the guide, should save you a heap of time Bra.

You might also consider a shiplap edge though you might need a more powerful router to make it happen. When installed properly, the exposed edge overlaps the board below -- keeps the water diverted to the outside. As the green wood dries, it shrinks across the width but *not* across the length . . . and the shiplap is sufficient to make sure the wall remains covered = no caulking needed. Nailing pattern matters too so that board edges don't curve away from the studs. As you look at the end grain, you can visualize how the board will try to wrap itself back around the tree . . . so you want that crown to the outside to keep the shiplap overlaps tighter. :)

Maybe you could make a removable roof for your tent platform so you can keep the snow off your tents? Then you can take it off when it's summer or not snowing and you wanna see the stars. :)
Add a larger base plate to the router to save those digits! that is what the 4 holes on the plastic base are for. You can also add a fence to ride the edge of the board.
That chamfered edge really looks nice. I wonder if you couldn't find a laser line projector instead of all the chalk lines. Might be hard to keep everything registered while you're ripping. Those narrow kerf ripping blades are amazing.

if you put the circular saw at a little angle, wouldn't you also get a suitable bevel in ONE action to be able to put seallant on ?
that would save you a lot of extra router work .

Stash you trimmed edges , you have a planer now . What do you think of planing 3/8 or so pieces to fit between the siding after the shrinkage for less caulk ???????? Tears in my eyes all through your Dad segment. I miss my Dad so much ! Thanks for sharing your Dad for a while, Be careful out there.

Installing a 2x2 outside horizontal your wall frame make the walls stronger and on 2x2 you put Tyvek. Now you get both horizontal and vertical insulation so less cool bridge and also you can put a vertical wood panels so less water leaks and if you using a lock panel model you get a nice ventilated wall.
I would have liked to see you build a sod house in the middle of the Llano. Keep it warm with buffalo chips. By the way your dad looked super impressed. You put "This Old House" to shame, and they have to go by code.
You say often about you have cedar trees there. You could try to utilize that cedar by making small pieces of it, cedar tree pieces are used also to keep moths away from clothes. I don't know if there is more exact requirements for those pieces, but if you got the cedar supply there why not investigate a bit if you could sell those pieces with some label you could make to them.
I like what you did with the edges of the boards looks great. You're getting her done always look forward to see the progress.
Our foreman at work was a A-hole on 3rd shift, so my buddy put blue chalk in his air vents of his truck in the winter. Seeing that blue Smurf at the stop light was hilarious 😂😂
Traditionally chalk lines used ashes for the chalk. I have seen them use old oil in Asia. The thin blades heat up and expand and become wavy and go into a death spiral. You need to keep the blades clean with a cleaning solution in a squirt bottle. Oil the blades at the end of the day because they will rust overnight. After a day of cutting I take my bar and chain off, clean out the rails and put the chain and bar tip in a pot of oil. I planed all the cedar on my house. Real pretty but I had to oil it for five years before it aged into a nice color without going gray. Also consider going vertical and do baton and board. No shrinkage problem and rain runs off good with plenty of air behind to keep the boards dry. I live in a rain forest.

A lot of work is involved filming this the way you do. For that I thank you for allowing us in on this build.

Beveled does look nice and will allow for multiple recaulks while drying also giving easy lines for the tip to follow. I thought about shiplap style cut but when you said it gets stringy, removing more material could be more difficult.

A word of caution with a automatic propane switch always have another tank because you will not know when it switched and when you run out your out

Hey I noticed builr up on blades from green lumber, use some wq40 and wipe them down and just spray them some every few cuts... trust me youll be happy

If your worried about killing your router, you could use your cordless handplaner. That groove on the bottom of the planers purpose is to chamfer board edges.
