People... unlike other so called 'singers,' Streisand actually sings all her songs live. This outtake is a rehearsal cut and was the first take of the song. It's a testament to HER talent, that she sounds as good as she does for a first, unrehearsed take. Most singers in a studio sing a few lines at a time - and do multiple takes of each take, making sure the hit the notes right. They DON'T sing live.
+Chris Landis In addition, understand that a lot of these bootleg rehearsal tapes are captured at the wrong speed. It sounds to me like this is a speeded up recording. I wonder what others think about this. Even so, it's Barbra! Head and shoulders above anyone else!
Frances , Lea, Samantha and Kaho Shimida...are my favorite Eponines. love the way they deliver the song...but this one makes me cry, this is amazing!!!
I have asked myself for years, why hasn't she released this song in one of her albums. It is such a beautiful songs that suits her so so well. It is herself at her best.
Before I heard this and Ide seen Les Mis...I said this was the number she would choose because it suits her voice type like a glove. If she was younger when it came out I would definitely see her as an outstanding Eponine
I would like to hear this if it were on one of her cds. This is not a really clear audio, and it would sound better. She does a great job though. Thanks for this post.
This is NOT an out-take from The Broadway Album. Or Back To Broadway, as some have suggested. It is from recording sessions in 1988, three years after The Broadway Album and five years before Back To Broadway. The sessions were produced by Rupert Holmes and the songs were intended for a follow-up to The Broadway Album. But for whatever reason Streisand decided she didn't like what she heard and the album they planned was scrapped. However, bootleg recordings and videotape of the sessions subsequently appeared, and many Streisand fans found the Holmes' produced tracks from '88 infinitely superior to most of what eventually appeared on Back To Broadway in '93. Some of those '88 tracks were subsequently released - Warm All Over and For All We Know on Just For The Record (1991) and How Are Things in Glocca Morra/Heather on the Hill on Release Me (2012). Others remain unreleased. This recording of On My Own is the least impressive performance from those sessions. Streisand was clearly still rehearsing and finding her way into the song, and on the videotape it's clear from the face she makes at the end that she's not at all happy with the take.
I would have loved to have heard the Barbra Streisand from 1966 - 1968 performing this song. Of course, it wasn't written yet, but that doesn't change the fact that I would have liked to hear her younger voice in this.
+Kim -- you, unlike so many others, have keen discrimination to know the difference between "Golden Age" Barbra and her later voice (as demonstrated here). Her first 10 albums are unmatchable classics.
I agree if it had all the polish of a final product would be sensaational... Ms. Streisand does not sing it like a pop song, which is the mistake so often made. Barbra makes her own of it with her own special inflections.
I wish babs had included this on back to broadway instead of that luck be a lady song, another good singer of this would of been Karen carpenter had she lived.
A good rendition and not an easy song to sing.Purely a subjective opinion but I think Lea Salonga sets the standard for this song, her version definitive.Streisand has a nasal quality, probably due to her use of vibrato, not to my taste.I have seen Streisand live, she is a great singer, one of the best, but hyperbole to suggest she is the greatest singer ever, nonsense. You cannot compare an opera singer with a pop singer, vocal technique different, opera singers taught to sing without amplification.Greatest singer ever does not belong to one singer, male or female.
Terrible, terrible, terrible, and terrible. Some songs cannot be change. Terrible. Perhaps, it didn't make the cut. I love Barbra, have been to her concerts, but I can see when something is bad. Too screaming, the character does not ask for that.
She is the best female vocalist of all time.
Very Expressive… Superb !!!!
Only Babra can sound so beautiful. You guys don't know it, but she is GOD!
The best version I've heard of this song! Love it
Were you drunk when you wrote this?
@@alexandreleite2541 nope not drunk but I think you were strung out on drugs when you asked me!
Love this song and her interpretation of it. She reaches for the depth of her music and achieves it.
Stunning....I can't imagine why this song wasn't released. It's flawless....totally amazing.
Thanks for posting this. Absolutely beautiful. It's been 40 years and I'm still mad about Barbra.

She can sing this song however she wants to and it would be flawless because she is Barbra!!
Hello from Paris/France/Europe!! Millions of thank you "cherish" because I've been seeking this song sung by Barbra for so long... Merci!!
WHY HAVE I NEVER SEEN THIS BEFORE BARBA IS BEAUTIFUL

La mejor cantante de todos los tiempos. ❤
Wonderfull performance! I love her always. She has a lovely voice!

Red Bird. She still sends shivers all over!!
❤️❤️
barbra
She makes it sound so easy!
My idol!!!!
I cannot find this track on this album she sings it brilliantly
I would like to hear this if it were on one of her cds. This is not a really clear audio, and it would sound better. She does a great job though. Thanks for this post.
Few years ago i saw the video barbra singing this song. Anyone has a copy of that video. Kindly post please
But you will never be alone!!
This is actually an outtake from the April 1988 Back To Broadway sessions, produced and arranged by Rupert Holmes.
Amen.
Is there anything this woman can’t sing. True legend.
Yes, there is: "Own my own." Too screaming.
as much as i hate to put negative comments... this song is wonderful ^^ maybe its not just for barbra... more like,Lea salonga
A beautiful rendition... but it doesn't sound like Les Mis to me. However, Barbra does make it her very own, which is what counts. :)

Barbra would've made a fantastic Fantine in Les Mis nowadays, but certainly if she was younger she could've been Eponine :)
I love lea salonga... Broadway..
Leah what/ Lea michele/ Lea salonga?
Yeah,me also. ;-)
hmm hmmm ... cough cough, i believe only a PERFECT GOD could give Barbra ... .... Barbra! ... BARBRA STREISAND!
It appears on the UK release. That's why I said I skip the track.

... there's an 'otherness to others' ... now ...
I agree if it had all the polish of a final product would be sensaational... Ms. Streisand does not sing it like a pop song, which is the mistake so often made. Barbra makes her own of it with her own special inflections.
It is not a "pop song," it's theater.
🤩🌈🏳️🌈🫶👌👏👩❤️👨👩❤️👩💑🙏🥰🎇 wonderful Barbra
Her version of this song is superlative
@leedscab123 how so?
No Broadway, Or Back To Broadway
lea, not leah
I wish babs had included this on back to broadway instead of that luck be a lady song, another good singer of this would of been Karen carpenter had she lived.
The problem isn't her; it's the arrangement.
What if Taylor or Arianna sung this?!?
If you mean Taylor Swift she auditioned for the movie for both Eponine and Cosette so there may be a recording of her singing it out there
Amazing voice, but the orchestration is awful. Don’t mess with what works already!
Jag tycker om dej.
That's what I said,it's a beautiful song and Babs spoiled it.Leah sang it as it should be sung.
Beautiful vocals of course, but the arrangement belies the despair of the lyrics. It’s a bit too upbeat.

@ilovemyidina I like to think only an idiot would think Barbra Streisand's voice is bad.

She,as always, puts her interpretation to a beautiful song but sadly this didn't work at all for me.
it's not her interpretation, she actually sings what is in the sheet music.
Leah Salonga.I don't know who Lea Michele is.Leah Salonga all the way for me.
If you have ever watched glee lea Michele played Rachel
So, you are besotted with Lea Salonga. Post it a thousand times in the comment sections of her video clips!
@@markwhitman9542 I never suggested I was besotted with her!
Meh, I don't really like the way she sings this song. Don't get me wrong; she's great, but not for this song. 8/
Barbara is a great singer but I don't like how she sung this wonderful song.
Beautiful version of this song,....
Too bad Babs went batshit woke.
Her voice sounds great. This arrangement is absolutely horrible.
Bending those notes, but never soaring, just plain soggy, lacking passion and conviction.
As much as I am a 'fan' of Babs I have got to say she absolutely ruined this beautiful song. It's the one track on the album which I will skip.
It's not even on the album. It has never been released! So you can't have skipped it.
Truly, truly, truly fucking awful
Terrible, terrible, terrible, and terrible. Some songs cannot be change. Terrible. Perhaps, it didn't make the cut. I love Barbra, have been to her concerts, but I can see when something is bad. Too screaming, the character does not ask for that.
Ben je niet zo lekker rust heeeeeeeeel lang uit
One of the worst versions of On My Own I have ever heard. Please do listen to Samantha Barks.
