    For anybody considering the printing workshops I would highly recommend it. Printing workflow, operating/troubleshooting printers or media selection are all addressed and the workshop is very individualized so that each participant can focus on their own needs. For me learning about the different media available and printing a small number of images on multiple types of paper was extremely valuable. I have now created a binder with all the media types I used and can refer to them in the future to help decide on what paper I want to use. I will plan on getting more sample packs from other manufactures and experiment with different papers. Printing has helped my photography as I now ask myself if this scene something I want to put on my wall and if not do I really need to take it. Thanks Rick and Hudson for your help.

    First, I wanted to say thanks for a great workshop and add my voice to the chorus of those that have said how much they enjoyed and learned at this workshop. Whether you are a seasoned printer or just starting out like I am, it is time well spent. Going in my goal was to learn how to get as much as I could out of my printer, but I learned so much more. If you decide to make the trip for one of these workshops add a couple of days and take in the surrounding territory. I only had one afternoon and went up the Columbia River Gorge and got some wonderful landscapes of the falls and overlooks that line the gorge. Oh, and Rick... don't ever cure your paper problem, spread it around.

    I loved this workshop in 2023. It was a blast - and learned a LOT! I had purchased the 8550 prior to the workshop at Rick's recommendation. It is a great printer - and I also learned about Red River papers which are dynamite. Where I still see a gap with some of the fine Epson fine art papers is ICC profiles. I'm curious if anyone has profiles that they have made for some of these papers such as Legacy Fiber or the Legacy Platine II. I did go back and found someone using the i1 Studio spectrophotometer (wow, that's a lot of work - but significantly cheaper than his more automated platform. Ok - at some point we say "buy the P900"). LOL I would be curious what other papers you have tested with the 8500/8550 - that does have profiles, and you like. I do know Red River is great at finding "similar papers" they offer. Enjoyed the video.

    For those of us who live far away in another country, it would be just great if you could be in with these groups going through all the printing stuff, but unfortunately we cannot 😞 but this sounded very interesting for those that could join. Love following your videos Hudson. :-)

    I agree with you about printing, coming from a background of 4x5 film I spent many hours in the darkroom because it was the only way to view the negatives I had taken. There’s nothing like a great print hanging on your wall that you look at every time you walk past it. Since most of us will never be able to attend your printing workshop, have you ever thought about doing a a Master series like you did recently for ON1 2024? I would definitely purchase it, especially since I use ON1 exclusively!!!

      We thanks so much for the kind words. It would be fun, but sadly printing is not as popular as it should be. It small group workshops are wonderful and really fit the demand a bit better. I'll work on working some more printing content into the channel though and I'll bet you'll like last month's On1 Plus video. ;)

    Going to do my wall with prints of our photos. Nothing beats the real thing on a real wall. No AI generated meaningless garbage :D Pure real photo taken with a story behind it.

    This is a filter question: Is there any way to adapt a 112mm threaded filter to the Kase 112mm magnetic step up adapter ring? I have only been able to find Magnetic screwed adapter rings up to 95mm?

    Perhaps my biggest reason for printing is because it gives you something tangible to hold and share. In a society where everything is digital and people view images on a screen, it's just no the same as holding a print or mounting a print on the wall. (And this doesn't even get into the things that social media sites and hosting sites do to our images to make them "fit" their system -- ie. reducing image quality/definition, among ot her things -- like forcing us into perhaps a certain crop like a square, which can alter the look/feel of an image).
    Plus printing has the added benefit of allowing you to look at your image a bit differently, and not be so bogged down by the digital viewing and we can look at the image at its intended viewing distance which I think is valuable too. It can also allow us to identify some things that perhaps maybe we didn't see before when viewing on screen and in our RAW processor, like distracting elements, or other things that we may have "missed" when viewing on the computer.

    Will you ever review or try out the Z 600mm pf ? Would love to hear your thoughts about that lens

    • @HudsonHenryPhoto
      @HudsonHenryPhoto  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It's fantastic. The Z equivalent of the 500PF for F. It's not a lens I have an interest in with the 800PF and 100-400 zoom with the 1.4 TC, but I I can tell you it's sharp as hell, light and handles well. Just like the 500 and 800 PFs before it. Special lenses.

    Interesting - thank you. You mention 'fine art paper', but one thing no one has clarified for me satisfactorily is, 'what is fine art paper'. The term is bandied about all the time, but, I have yet yet to see an explanation as to what specifically are the requirements for paper to be labelled 'fine art paper'... well, other than as a marketing term, justifying a higher cost. Any thoughts ?

    • @HudsonHenryPhoto
      @HudsonHenryPhoto  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's a very fundamental difference to those with printing experience. Paper vs plastic. Fine art papers are actual fiberous paper not plastic. Glossy and laster are not fine art. Fine art has no shine or reflectivity at all, but generally has less dynamic range particularly in the blacks than glossy, luster or baryta papers. Fine art has archival longevity of 100s of years. Fine art feels very special in your hands. It's thick, heavy paper. It generally costs significantly more. My favorite is Epson legacy fibre. Hannemule makes some fabulous examples too.

    Hudson, Rick, I've been a follower since ATS 1, I've never missed an ATS.(Well maybe a fujifilm one) What platform do you print from? LRC, PS or other? I love to print and frame my images but sometimes I match the screen color and sometime it take many tries to get the right setting. I print with LRC or PS, I use mostly Red River Papers and I have an Epson 1430 Artisan printer.

    • @HudsonHenryPhoto
      @HudsonHenryPhoto  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Lightroom classic is our print engine of choice. The issue is usually a breakdown in the application color management and/or screen brightness and calibration. It's the kind of thing we get solved for everyone during our workshops.

    Would love to know how you mat the pictures and handle roll paper matting. Maybe an ats?

    • @HudsonHenryPhoto
      @HudsonHenryPhoto  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I cut a lot of my own decades ago, but now I rarely matte or frame. Rick does. I'm more modernist and prefer to mount the prints directly to a solid substrate like dibond or wonder board, spray seal them with pro art shield and float them off the wall with no frame to distract. You can see that behind my desk by the printer.
      Roll paper flattens with time covered by vellum and weighted down. I also have a 50" D&K print de-roller that can flatten them in seconds. ;) it's a spendy tool though.

      @@HudsonHenryPhoto Thankyou. I also use a seal laminator as it gives a nice flat finish. I was wondering if there was something a little easier. Tried spray but it's messy and stinks. The laminator is fine as long as it's done in a very clean dust free environment. I have not found a good local service yet

    Love your print videos! I run a p900 and am curious what your favorite paper is to make night sky photos pop? Ive been using epson ultra premium lustre and epoxying it with Artresin which makes it very glossy...adds quite a bit of depth and makes it look real 3d. Thanks for your help!
