I've watched this a few times and still haven't done this project. Next time I'm in AZ, I'm going to try and do it.

I have a 96 Isuzu Rodeo 2.6l. I bought it non running with head gasket just replaced. I found that the original owner couldn't time it. It to me (mechanic for 34yrs) and my dad (mechanic for 45yrs)....took us over a week to get it running...working on it about an hour a day before I went into work. The reason was simply (but not at the time) that the timing marks on the cams were completely off. Idk if it was like that from the factory or what. We had to time it by aligning everything up with tdc, distributer pointing to # 1, etc, etc...we couldn't get it to even fire by aligning the way it was supposed to be not 180° out....but after moving everything where it should be then putting timing belt on, it fired right up idling smooth as can be. I saw another forum where someone else had the same issue so it really makes me wonder what is up with the timing marks ya know? Thanks for your video!

Got to check mine out tomorrow hopefully. Just bought it earlier today as an off-road vehicle for the land we have. Tried to make a big hill with it earlier and was too slick. Went to go around another trail and did some riding through the property and now I have a rattle that sounds like it’s in the top end I believe. Hopefully something minor I dk. I’ve never owned one of these

Why do the other channels say that #4 is top dead center?

Hey buddy Iam having a problem with my 96 Isuzu rodeo it’s runs perfectly the only thing i noticed is that when Iam trying to set timing I move the distributor back and forth it won’t move alignment marks to set it to 12 degrees it stock on 15 degrees

Hello Oscar, yea that sounds strange. The specified value is 12 degree Below Top Dead Center @ 900 rpm. So, make sure you have warmed up the 2.6L 4ZE1 thoroughly, check that the throttle valve is fully closed, shut off air conditioning, set your auto transmission to park or manual transmission to neutral. Then you can check the marks with an inductive timing light. However, if your engine is not idling rough, or lacking power, or excessively consuming fuel then you may just want to leave it as is. The manual valve lash/clearance is not something to neglect. Are you getting any codes from an OBD2 scan?

Yeah it just doesn’t budge like if the computer is holding at 15 degrees I can move the distributor all day long back and forth just doesn’t move it’s crazy

@@humieandoscarlopez3483 yes bud that is correct, with the engine cold, on 4ZE1 2.6L from 1987 and newer both intake and exhaust valves need to be set at a lash of 0.008in or 0.20mm. Older pre 1987 4cyl engines were set at 0.006in 0.15mm for Intake valves and 0.010in or 0.25mm for exhaust valves.

@@humieandoscarlopez3483 in regard to your comment about not getting any change in degree after adjusting the distributor... You are working on a 4ZE1 2.6L right?so I am somewhat stumped by that, its hard for me to say via email, however my suspicion is that your Crankangle sensor also known as Optical pick up sensor may have failed. It is built into the distributor. A quick test will be to slap a different distributor in the engine to test the result. The other thing that you should do is an ITEC OBD1 self diagnostic using the jumper lead under the center console. Is your ITEC storing any codes? This may help narrow down a diagnosis. The ITEC will run factory presets is cases of failure, for instance when an 02 sensor fails and will not send the real time data to the ITEC then the ITEC reverts to a factory preset for air/fuel mixture. Many vehicles are designed to do this in order to continue fuel injection operation, usually in my experience the factory presets will run rich on the fuel delivery, leading to excessive fuel consumption. Hope this is useful info, best of luck and be sure to update us with your discovery or progress. You also want to go on planetisuzoo.com or pirate4x4.com to see if any other 4z owners have had this issue.

YES, but use the specs for your vehicle found on the emissions sticker under the hood.
