Mal has a great point about “Checking In” and to push the conversation forward. Imagine being territorial over a spot you don’t own. Why do I have to check in with you? Shouldn’t I reach out to your landlord?

    • @RatedKwong1
      @RatedKwong1 ปีที่แล้ว +2

you dont need to check in, but celebrities get extorted (mainly knowing they are) for the trade of safety from the gangsters with connections so they dont get robbed in the city. its a sick culture but its all over hip hop culture and it doesnt seem to have an end.

Like Mal I lost my little brother to gun violence 5yrs later lost my older brother to gun violence both to random drive by shootings here in Chicago neither were into that life my little brother was a honor roll student played basketball and football in 10th grade had scouts coming to games my big brother was in college and was home on spring break my point is not of poor me but one of when the wrong person is taken away it hurts a whole different way then when 1 is out causing troubles its been 16yrs since I lost my baby brother and almost 22 for my big brother every birthday still hurts every holiday never feels the same it dont ever go away it only ever gets a little easier and still someday a little harder the death of Takeoff will always hurt the world and culture even tho time moves on memories stay forever RIP Kirshnik Khari Ball to my brother's Kenny and Michael I'm still missing you everyday

    TIMESTAMPS
    May TakeOff Rest In Peace.
( I'm going on vacation so i'm not gonna be doing the timestamps for a lil bit. To Solo Oat Kid, Nia Lee, and everyone else who always taps in through the comments, I hope you and yall loved ones stay safe and have a blessed November )
0:00:34 Rest In Peace TakeOff. Rory & Mal talk about the situation, the rapper lifestyle, how TakeOff was a laid back guy from what they saw and how he didn't really do anything wrong.
0:21:31 Why is it only in hip-hop that we have to check in with other people when going to another state?
0:26:43 Mal says this whole situation is beyond traumatic. For TakeOff's loved ones, life will never be the same. Mal talks about his perspective as someone who has lost a sibling to gun violence (May he Rest In Peace). We must come together as a culture and prevent this from happening
0:33:19 Eddin brings up a good point about social media. Why does social media share violence and visuals? These types of things aren't normal at all, and it warps how we as a society view these things, and programs us to become desensitized to things we shouldn't be desensitized to. Rory talks about how people put ads to make money off of these horrific videos, but then acknowledges that he does the same and is a hypocrite and isn't sure how much longer he can do it for. How would it look if Rory & Mal just don't talk about it? But if they talk about it, ads are going to be there, because thats how they make money off of the pod
0:39:10 Talks about the the changes we can make as a culture. Would anything actually change at all? When is this going to stop happening? Thank you TakeOff for everything you've contributed to the world, may you Rest In Peace

Great episode and good for for dedicating an episode to it. One thing To add tho: ENVY. Look at the financial times we’ve been in and are still in. People are hungry and now more than ever, people are looking over at what the next person has. During covid all we did was sit on IG for months by ourselves looking at ppl doing better than you etc. in my personal life, Ive noticed the envy and ppl watching others getting worse so i cant discount that that has something to do with this stuff too. Its sad and a byproduct of the structure of our society.
So these people are hungry and they see someone who they think is better than them and that they think thinks theyre better than them (bc of music and their own fragile ego), so they don’t hesitate to pull the trigger bc it makes them feel powerful for a moment. Very sad and sick world we live in.

People need to realize that it is the music and the words that we speak over ourselves and to others. Our favorite deceased rappers speak on their own demises on a good beat and we buy into it! We see it every single day! Things have to change in order for things to start to make sense. Living only 28 years and losing your life over bullshit IS bullshit.

From my perspective (I'm french) there's two reasons from all those deadly shootings in Rap : American culture about cash and guns, let me explain
In France we've got the same lyrics, rappers talking bout moving bricks, guns, gangbanging, killing oops ... But we've never seen something like because you can't find guns that easily (I'm from the hood and I've seen a gun held by somebody that's not a cop or from the military maybe once or twice In my life) and because rappers don't walk around with 500k+ in jewelry in cash, in France we ain't got a cash culture, we're never moving with cash except if you're a plug or working unlicensed and your boss pays you under the jacket, so there's no reason to shoot somebody and it's not easy to find a gun in the first place. Lyrics don't kill people, guns do, and if you're a celebrity and you're moving with a mili on you you're just a moving target , you'll never see Cole or Kendrick get smoked at a party, rappers need to move smarter , RIP takeoff tho 🙏

The problem is the labels push them to be more accessible via social media and that’s part of the problem. They worked way too hard to get where they are to be amongst regular people who harbor hate and jealousy because they didn’t get where they wanted to go. That might be super trivial but in this culture - this life we’re all riding this timeline for the next 50-100 years and after that, no one alive today will be alive then.. so let’s just spread joy and camaraderie between each other til it’s over.

I really think rappers getting together to come up with an idea, laying down a foundation on how to move around anywhere and everywhere would be a step in the right direction to stop or minimize this from happening as often as it is because we can’t control what others do. Crazies will always roam around, but as a culture we can come together and look out for one another. If someone starts that conversation and takes charge, I think we’ll be getting to better days soon.

@@alexandershabazzi8890 I think there’s a small change someone will come along who is accepted without all that comes with the culture and build up from scratch on it. Thing is there’s already rappers like Kendrick who arguably already went through the “glamorizing violence” phase while educating his listeners what comes with that, he already popped off…if he went out of his way to pave the way for the next generation of rappers there’s hope. Not him necessarily but someone like him, there’s a few here and there that can start making moves towards that. We can contribute in that movement, but in order for it to jumpstart it has to be someone with power to get that going.
Just speculating, I know there’s a thousand reasons why this won’t happen but it’s just an idea.

The reason for checking in is rappers make a living talking about the pain of street life. Many of the rappers are borrowing the image and likeness of real people. It basically comes down to those type of people who just walk around thinking that they can take what they want, do what they want. Even when being a known figure in rap/hiphop there’s always that one or two people that feel that they deserve what you got or what you have. And it becomes normal… hittin a lick off someone, poppin off at the Ops. Robbing someone or robbing and killing someone, or just killing someone just becuz he looked at you wrong. Like it has become normal, not just in music but in real life. It’s a crazy world we live in. I just feel like it’s deeper than rap. It’s the people, to me.

It’s the environment itself. These folks are growing up in impoverished neighborhoods, and when you live in an impoverished neighborhood it’s probably also difficult to find well paying jobs so you have to get multiple jobs and because you have multiple jobs it’s hard to actually raise your kids. Because there are no after school problems kids are just left to figure it the fuck out in an impoverished, negative environment which leads to terrible outcomes. It’s not a “we need to do better”, not totally anyway. You can ask a impoverished community to just make itself better. It requires investment, instead of bailing out corporations maybe help build that hood up.

“We need to stop this” in response to rappers getting killed is odd to me. Let me explain.
Like Rory said, every case of a rapper getting killed had been different. Whether they be robbery, fight gone wrong, an act of jealousy, drug overdose - whatever. I believe Take was in the wrong place at the wrong time. I don’t think Nipsey deserved to die either. Also, wrong place at the wrong time. These cases are not monolithic. I love Mal but saying “we gotta stop this” or “something’s gotta change” is crazy because the streets have been the streets since the beginning. Granted rap music is violent, it’s not always the reason young brothers are dying. Jealousy, hate, anger and trauma among other things are the reasons that people choose to pull that trigger.
