Eric Clapton turned me onto Brian Wilson 43 years ago. With my musically trained ear, it still took me three listens of Pet Sounds before I "got it", the clouds lifted, and a cornucopia of sounds and emotions revealed themselves. This song was the first, immediately speaking to me. I carried it's lyrics in my wallet from age 14 into my 30s. Even today, it's autobiographical.
you're lucky. it took me about a 100 or so listens before I realized how great "God Only Knows" truly is....and now it is a part of me just about daily.
It also happened to me. Pet Sounds was not quite a "love at first listen" album for me, but when the album really hit me (that is, when I was "ready" for it in a way), it was life-changing
Pet Sounds' depth-charge, delayed impact seems a common experience. It took about 15 plays before I got it (when going on about PS to doubter friends I implore them to do this). I think perhaps this was to do with coming to it expecting the glorious immediacy of that early sound, the fizz of their harmonies. Pet Sounds feels like it's articulating something I hadn't recognised in myself but somehow knew all along.
It may not be my favourite, or even top 3 Beach Boys/Brian Wilson songs, but this and 'In My Room' really are the most 'Brian Wilson' tracks they could have chosen for this wonderful documentary. Can't wait for it!
Just realized you were probably considering the title of this video when raising the question - it's mislabeled. Brian Wilson himself is providing this harmony, not Neil Young

I like the low tone of Yacob's voice in this song..beautiful
Really nice cover
So I wonder why Neil Young's name isn't listed on the cover art along with the other artists who contributed to the soundtrack?
Have you ever met Young? He's an asshole!
Because he's not in the film, presumably :)

@@puseye have you ever met Neil Young ??
@@CaptTerrific He is in the film from the Buffalo Springfield days. Plus he's filmed today over-dubbing his guitar part during the closing credits.
Sounds like some college campus singing to impress Freshman chicks. Ppbt!
