Edelbrock makes a "Performer" Quadrajet replacement that is an exact fit spread bore so no adapters etc. Those are about $400 and work almost perfect right out of the box. Not the budget route but for a replacement idea likely the best. Those Quardrajet carbs are rebuildable, not everyone is good with them however, and they will give the best overall reliability.

Quadrajets are great carbs when they are new and/or working right... However as a mechanic I mostly saw them when they were old and crusty and no longer working right. We used to call them Rottenchester Quadrajunks. I LOVE the AFB, Carter/Weber/Edelbrock carb. My first experience with one was a old Carter AFB that had been mounted on a Ford small block in a boat. The boat had sunk, the manifold (with AFB on it) was left sitting outside for YEARS. I pulled the carb stuck a carb kit in it and slapped it on a crappy running C10 that had a worn out Qjet on it, the truck ran GREAT after that! I couldn't tell you how many Quadrajunks I have replaced with them since then.
Quadrajets are awesome carbs if you,or a mechanic, are good w adjusting them. If the people workin on them are junk, then that's where the quadrajet gets their name
@@M4MED86 They are good but are much harder to tune than the Edelbrock in terms of being as easy to take them apart plus they are a little easier to get jets and tuning parts for over the quad and it's easy to get either the tuning manual or the PDF to tune them for your needs or for Dyno purposes while it's a little hard with the Qjet. The other thing is the Quadrajet is also known for those crappy Welch plugs in the bottom of the float bowl that have lead plugs in them that shrink over time just like mine are doing now and other quads I had many years ago which causes a flooding after it's been run and warmed up good and that flooding also washing the oil off of the cylinders walls which isn't good either ! I like them when they work but once they hit that tipping point of leaking fuel and the throttle shaft bushing go bad they suck and that's what I like about the Edelbrock they don't have those Welch plugs below the fuel bowl to leak and usually don't unless you got one that was a bad porous casting that got by inspection ! Really the best way to fix those plugs is to drill them out then thread them to use set screws cut down then use some permatex cylinder liner adhesive that's commonly used on diesel engines with cylinder liners to help hold them in so those damn pesky set screws won't ever leak or come loose like the factory lead plugs do but most people either don't know how to do it or it's just not worth the time to do it and just buy another carburetor instead lol . I am throwing on a Edelbrock today until I can take a closer look at my old Quadrajet because it's been leaking fuel and I think the bushings are gone now because the idle is up and down at times but hey it's been on my 400sbc for 20 years in 2 plow trucks and had been good until recently now that I built a new plow truck that can be driven anyplace now so it's had a lot of sitting time outside although I would start it every 2 weeks just to throw a charge to the batteries and keep the fluids moving and carburetor wet so I can't really bitch lol.

nice. I just took off the Rochester quadrajet off and installed a edelbrock onto a 305 powered 1985 Chevy Scottsdale wrecker. Didn't film it running yet but I got a couple parts of me messing with it on my page.
I put an edelbrock on my 1987 F 250 351-W 5.8 L had to re jet and change metering rods till it leaned it out enough to run properly , It was running way to rich ( To much fuel), Carb comes with a manual it explains how to do it , Tip chilton manual explains rich and lean condition for fuel and how to check ,Good luck and most of all have fun while doing it cause satisfaction when done is all worth it !!!

They are supper easy to work on rebuild & tune but for all out drag racing your better off with a Demon or Holley double pumper race or Dominator just for the fact that they can be tuned more than any other carburetor out .
Mine wouldn't because it's not wide enough compared to the Edelbrock so I had to cut mine in half then widen it so both bolt holes would line up on the Edelbrock . All I did was cut it in half then bolt both ends on & made sure they were sitting square so the throttle & kick down linkage was lined up then welded a small piece of steel plate to connect both halves . My engine & bracket are from a 78 blazer with a 400 sbc that had a quadrajet on it that the bracket bolts to the back of the carburetor by the rear 2 bolts & not like some later ones where the bracket bolted to the intake manifold bolts . They make a bracket I see on summit racing but it's 50.00 so I said screw that & made my own for cheap & a little time to do it but if I wanted to go back to a quadrajet I would have to find another bracket off of a truck in the bone yard or cut mine in half again then weld back shorter again but I am not going to do that so it will stay this way with the Edelbrock on it being it actually runs better now .
Did you do anything to the metal fuel line after cutting it? Like a flare of some sort? Or just cut it and clamped the rubber line on ? I’m at that step right now with my swap on a 1988 caprice with a gmc 350 sbc
He hooked all of his vacuum lines up other than the vacuum advance line for distributor advance ! He didn't show hooking up the brake booster but did show the fitting he used for it on the back of the Edelbrock ! I think most of the emissions lines were gone like the vent line from the tank that goes into the charcoal canister then from the large vent tube from the old Quadrajet down onto the charcoal canister that gets filtered and goes back into the gas tank originally but being i see he used a old boat gas tank he has no way of using that stuff ! On most of these old square body trucks that stuff has been deleted by someone at one time because those charcoal canisters would go bad and either plug up or leak fuel and they are kind of hard to find now so most people just delete them although I think LMC truck sells them and all the fuel and vent lines for them ! All you really need is the vacuum line for the brake booster hooked up unless you have hydroboost power assisted brakes that use the power steering pump to run the hydroboost for your brakes and then of course your pcv line to the pcv valve in the valve cover and your advance line coming off of your distributor and it should run just fine if it's in a good state of tune ! Make sure to use the small advance port on the front of the Edelbrock that doesn't have continuous vacuum sucking air as that will cause your advance in the distributor to be at full advance causing it to start hard when hot so use the one side that had no vacuum at idle for your advance ! You can tell which one will have constant vacuum by pulling the plug off of it and can probably hear it sucking air but if you can't hear it put your finger over it to see if it's pulling vacuum or not ! If it had nothing at idle that's the one you want but check it by either using your finger or a vacuum gauge then give it just a little throttle and then it should have some vacuum pulling to operate the vacuum advance like it should ! Just remember if you also have that advance hooked up to full vacuum all the time it will also tear the diaphragm in the vacuum advance and cause the vacuum advance not to work and a slight vacuum leak because they aren't designed to be at full vacuum all the time especially if it's a old distributor that has seen a lot of use which makes the diaphragm weak after years of use being it moves in and out with throttle movement and of course the amount of vacuum the engine is making at different rpm's ! I am doing this same conversion today on my 82 K10 that had a 400 sbc that the Quadrajet has finally gone bad ( leaking throttle plate bushings which cause erratic idle and the welch plugs under the float bowl area the lead plugs have shrunk so once it gets hot from running then shut off they leak fuel into the intake causing it to flood once you go to start it right after so it's time ! I have used these Edelbrock carburetors on quite a few different cars and trucks through the years and they have been pretty good very easy to work on and tune if needed infact I have a 750 cfm on my mild 9:1 build 440 Chrysler with a 509 lift cam headers and a performer RPM intake and it dynoed out at 530 HP with some minor carb jet swaps and timing adjustment done so I am completely happy with them although for all out drag racing or racing in general you would be better off with a Holley double pump or a Barry Grant Demon that's tuned and set up for your engine just for that purpose of racing being double pumps usually don't work very well on the street unless in a manual car or auto with a high flash speed torque converter then properly set up with the right power valves and correct pump shot cams and jetting to get them to work well on a street car the other draw back is fuel mileage will suffer with a double pump as well so on a mild street car vacuum secondary carbs are the way to go if you want to sacrifice some performance and better fuel economy ! Hope this helps lol the only reason I was on hear was to see how he had his throttle linkage hooked up being I couldn't remember if I needed that adapter for the throttle cable to attach which I think I have a extra in my Edelbrock parts stash lol !
You must readjust the cable. It's a small slip on the cable about 4 in from the carb. Open the clip then move the carb all they way open and snap the clip back closed.
I put one on my 82 that has a 400 sbc & it gets maybe slightly better fuel mileage now because the old quadrajet was worn out pretty bad with leaky throttle shaft bushings so it would idle high then low & the lead welch plugs that are under the float bowl started to leak fuel into the intake manifold once the engine was warm causing it to flood the engine causing harder starting & of course fuel waste . Even performance seems better being the old carburetor was worn so bad but it served me well for the 12+ years it was on my other plow truck then me pulling the engine out & putting it in my 82 about 3 years ago & it finally needing to be changed out . I got the Edelbrock for free from a friend & all I did was take it apart then soaked & cleaned it up with carburetor cleaner let it dry pulled the jets out & both floats & needles out then soda blasted the inside & out flushed it with water then blew everything out with compressed air & the only thing it needed was a new accelerator pump which was 12 bucks on ebay & it works great & doesn't leak even with the old gaskets on it still .
I just bought a Mr gasket carb adapter but I'm confused because they only come with 2 stud bolts do you know why not 4? it comes with all other hardware but just 2 stud bolts
@jessica cale, learn about quadrajets..they are way better than the edelbrock carbs.you should have a qualified tech rebuild & set up your qjet.plenty of power available & way better fuel economy when you go light on the throttle( small primarys).
What's the change like? Did your truck idle better or run smoother? I'm asking because i have a 1986 Chevy Silverado c10 and i want to do the same exact thing but i want to know the difference between the two?

pls answer the question about what happen to the vacoum lines
He hooked all of his vacuum lines up other than the vacuum advance line for distributor advance ! Hope this helps lol the only reason I was on hear was to see how he had his throttle linkage hooked up being I couldn't remember if I needed that adapter for the throttle cable to attach which I think I have a extra in my Edelbrock parts stash lol !
Great video sir!
nicely done with the video!
Thank you for the video it was really helpful .
Good stuff man, thanks!
What about if you have a kick down cable and what size flue line is that
Thank from Spain 🍺🍺
Awesome. Video. Thanks
May wanna adjust them mixture screws
YOU ARE AWESOME !
Thank you.
Thanks, Video helped a lot. Cheers
After I swapped them now my transmission kickdown cable won't reach
You must readjust the cable. It's a small slip on the cable about 4 in from the carb. Open the clip then move the carb all they way open and snap the clip back closed.
That sounds good! Maybe if you're Helen Keller?
Patrick Price Dude is sounding good for what it is basically a slap it on there and start of the fucker up not bad for being freezing cold cold start
How's the gas mileage with that Edelbrock compared to the Quadrajet?
I was told that the adapter hurts the flow, and that one should match the carb and manifold.
Sure did help, thanks
I just bought a Mr gasket carb adapter but I'm confused because they only come with 2 stud bolts do you know why not 4? it comes with all other hardware but just 2 stud bolts
Do you need the adapter?
I have a 71 c10 and I’m looking to get a new carb
Cool stuff. Very helpful.
if i have a chevy C10 1981 6 cilynder, can i use use this type of carburetor and if i must buy all the adapters?
I just bought a 1406 for my 86 square body, do i have to use an adapter plate ???
Great video and thank you for being detailed!
Thank You! I'm doing this to my 1981 TIffin Allegro that has the 454 with the quadrajunk on it. This gives me hope!!!
@jessica cale, learn about quadrajets..they are way better than the edelbrock carbs.you should have a qualified tech rebuild & set up your qjet.plenty of power available & way better fuel economy when you go light on the throttle( small primarys).
@@robinarrington5498 Agreed.
How was your hood clearance after the swap?
Thanks for the tutorial! where did you wire the 12V for the Choke?
+Rafael MC it should wire to accessories on fuse block
Perfect video!!!!
you should always ad a fuel pressure regulator
Did you use an egr cover plate?
16:15 throttle cables
6:15 *
Great info 👍 thanks
Is this mechincal fuel pump or electric
somebody answer this .. I was always told to only run steel fuel line from the pump .. for safety.. is this true ?
Its safer but I've been running hose for yrs and no problems at all!
Yes.
Real smart having the fuel tank in the cab
Question, you don't have to install the pcv vacuum line for the distributor?
GreaserCentral PCV doesn't go to the distributor. The vacuum line to the distributor controls vacuum advance.
Great video guy..🖒🖒
Great video btw
I knew those were supposed to be closed. Mine are open the little flaps on top.
I need a new carb for my el camino
Very Awesome.
Thank you really helpful
What's the change like? Did your truck idle better or run smoother? I'm asking because i have a 1986 Chevy Silverado c10 and i want to do the same exact thing but i want to know the difference between the two?
Melón malone Can you give me the number of where you got your intake and Carburator from.I want the same exact one you got.
I've been running a thunder series or a few years on pontiac 400, It's getting time for rebuild, I've decided to go back to Q-jet!
Good move.
@@briansd2772 No regrets.
Everything looks great besides that fuel filter that has burned down more vehicles than children with lighters.. get rid of that trash.
