Rollers! Join me as we continue the Showcase for Darkest Dungeon: The Board Game created by Nick Niotis, Argyris Poungouras with art by Christopher Bourassa and published by Mythic Games. After the conclusion of the How To Setup video, we now wrap up the tail end of setup and dive into the depths of gameplay!
In this video you'll see Exploration and Battles covered. Be sure to stay tuned for more too! Hope this helps you make an informed decision on it and/or helps you get the game to the table quicker. If you enjoy the video, be sure to leave a like!
    *Corrections:*
#1. A Jester self 'push 3' would send the Jester three spaces away and the same number of positions on the stance track.
#2. FYI: Any 'self' conditions of a skill still apply when a monster is killed.
#3. The light cannot go higher than level '5', no gameplay imapct and will be adjusted in the next video.

"Ruin has come to our family.
In this adaptation of Red Hook’s acclaimed Darkest Dungeon video game, you strive to cleanse a manor and its surroundings of all manner of evil: hordes of the undead, foul beasts and eldritch abominations... And, finally, either at death’s door or at your wit’s end, you will have to uproot evil itself from the darkest dungeon.
Darkest Dungeon is a fully cooperative dungeon crawl game in which players take on the role of adventurers. Although brave and determined, adventurers are only human! They are prone to the madness and pain the twisted dwellers of the dungeons will inflict upon them. Death can occur, but is not the worst fate: heroes can be driven mad and beyond help!
The game is played in campaigns of 11 missions. To reach the Darkest Dungeon itself, players will undertake 3 missions per threat level and vanquish the boss. Then, they will be strong enough and face the horrors of the Darkest Dungeon! They may emerge victorious... if they dispatch the source of evil that plagues the land.
For each hero, select 3 skills out of 7 before heading into your mission (and level the heroes up to gain access to more skills). In each room, pick the most suitable stance to best resolve the conflict! Then, on each turn, a player chooses two of the available actions of moving, interacting with the environment, changing their stance or using a skill (if eligible for their current stance). Triumph over encounters, resist rampant madness and emerge victorious before throwing yourself into another battle. Between missions, spend your time in the hamlet, visiting various buildings to find relief from the physical and mental trauma you’ve just endured. Restore the hamlet to its former glory and it will reward you and help you to fulfill the ultimate goal."

Also, Dirk Stab pulls the Jester towards the monster, not the other way around, to represent him moving forward as he does in the video game. And I'm pretty sure extra effects happen even on a kill, though I can't say for sure where that's said

Very happy to see more Darkest Dungeon!
One thing I saw was when the Jester used his Finale move and did the self push, he does push 3 spaces away and it has to be 3 spaces...but also he goes backwards into the support stance, not the aggressive stance so the madman attack would have gone towards the Hellion.
Edit: Also don't think you can go above 5 light further to the left..but I could be wrong
And last thing the Jester with his Dirk Stab still does self effects even if he kills the monster, since the Jester himself is still alive to have the effects applied to him.

Watching this for the first time and commenting as I go: when you self inflicted "push 3" for the jester during his attack, you actually "pulled" to the aggressive position on the stance tracker, not "pushed". A push is backwards. A pull is forwards. Don't know if that makes much of a difference, but it is that way in the video game.
Also, i didnt think you physically move across the board when pushed or pulled. That's a move action. Excellent video though. Well done!

@@RollingSolo my apologies. Video #2 actually addresses this. Question for you since you had this game longer than I did: when do the characters actually move around the room (and not just move around the stance tracker)? It’s interesting to see how the Jesters push and pull mechanics are different from the video game, are you sure that they are the correct way round? Push shelf means that you move away from the aggressive stance and Pull self means towards aggressive stance. In the video game, using “Finale” moves the Jester to the rear (ranged / 4th spot) spot on the track, whereas “solo” skill moves him towards the front.

I really like your solo playthroughs but one detail really bugs me in a weird and subjective way: most of your shots are so very still so as to look like pictures. You're cutting around a lot of the actual moving of miniatures and cards and it feels less like someone's playing, more like I'm being explained things. Which has its perks, to be sure! It's a good way to learn the game, but it also makes it less easy for me to feel like I'm following you playing the game, if that makes sense. Anyway, still a great job on the production and explanation.

    • @RollingSolo

Hey Clement! I appreciate the feedback. One of the cons with having your hands flying around in front of the camera often is that a camera likes to try and focus on them. Which means the image is popping in and out which may make viewers sea sick watching the camera react. To keep the viewers focus on the gameplay I remove some of the hand gestures. Dice rolls and more exciting hand gestures I leave in but I’d rather not have the jazz hands effect which can overtake a playthrough and become a big distraction.
There’s pros and cons for each style for sure but I’ve gotten good feedback over the years and learned a lot. My original videos were one hand with a camera and the other playing all in one take…now that was chaos lol

Yeeaahh.. Don't wanna be a Negative Nancy, but pretty glad I didn't back this. Apart from the harsh downgrades to storage and components and the shipping debacle, the errors I see in what is showed here alone make me expect the typical lengthy errata and FAQ that Mythic with their lacking QA always has to do already.
Also, the gameplay looks less than stellar. The exploration phase with completely random provisions to combat completely random penalties looks super unfun, has zero gameplay depth and is WAY too long for what it is.
Gameplay on the tactical map looks pretty basic with d10 to hit rolls and mostly just trying to focus damage on the closest enemy. Doesn't seem like identifying which ability to use is a real brain-burner, seems pretty obvious most of the times. No real tactical depth here. Also, quite lengthy and super tedious, with all the token management and general upkeep, especially with the stance board having to be managed in addition to the map. Having to shuffle around on 2 boards for a simple push just makes it more complicated without adding much to gameplay.
And this is all the game is, no story to salvage it, and the town phase seems just as basic.
Too bad they kept the game pretty much 1 to 1 as the prototype and just made a bunch more of that instead of iterating on the feedback and criticisms that were made back than. Don't see any improvement here at all. Who would want to play just this for dozens of hours with all the expansions? Not me, that's for sure.
Game's still a real beauty with the minis and art design, but that does not make it a good game unfortunally.

Remember you only saw two aspects of gameplay and one battle. There’s the Hamlet and Boss battles one top of a ton of variation across the game giving you lots to discover and work through. This is but a taste my friend, don’t judge a book by its cover!
A better proof read to catch a few spelling errors would have been good but nothing impacts gameplay from the few I saw. Update packs on these large scale games will resolve this easily. This and Solomon Kane are gems from them for me.
Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts too. Good to see differing opinions too!

    • @Tharukan
      @Tharukan 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@morgaknightgames Would make it slightly better, I guess, but can't save the system since the penalties are still completely random, so you can't anticipate them and thus you don't really have anything to go by for the decision which provisions to take. There is just no meaningful decision space built in there, honestly.
I think a better house rule to "improve" the system would be: Just roll half the provisions and only use them during the "tactical" combat. During exploration, roll half the penalty dice (1 per character) and take the penalties without mitigation. Can the part of the scout that allows you to roll less dice. It effectively just speeds up the exploration step and does not add decision space, so it's a poor man's fix, but at least you don't waste unnecessary time with that system, have basically the same outcome and use the provisions where they are more interesting, in combat.
Just to be clear, I think this game is perfectly solid and serviceable. It just looks... boring. And I think that's even worse for a piece of media than being bad. Meaningful decisions are what makes games interesting in the first place, and there are hardly any here.
