    They’ve recently started up the 18 month courses but it’s kinda expensive so i’m tempted to go for the 1yr course in 2021. I hope they’ve gained some knowledge since your time there being a first 1 year student and made changes to make sure it’s now also a solid choice for people at the intermediate level too. I’m still a super beginner rn tho

    Hello! Do you know Tobira, also an intermediate grammar book? It is very good, and it has a lot of small grammar topics, that will ameliorate your writing skills a lot. I'm using it in my university. Btw, I studied 5 months with Genki in Tokyo, your review is quite similar to my reception. I'll join again next month for 3 weeks, and I will start using that "chuukyuu" (dunno how to write it ) book, so I appreciate your comments on it a lot!

    • @ThatsMyChad
      @ThatsMyChad  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That chuukyuu book gives me mixed feelings, there is a much better one called "an integrated approach to intermediate Japanese" I highly recommend. The chuukyuu one moves very slow, without any good english explanation. I have heard of Tobira, but stayed away from it in Japan since the vast majority of my studies were on my own (again, the genki school's intermediate levels are so slow you hardly learn anything, imo). Nice people, but their intermediate level curr. need's some help.

    Good luck for N2! I've been studying for a few years passively in my spare time outside of school, but have recently stepped up my pace.
    I was wondering what the purpose of the 〜て form is? I've read it is used for connecting verbs and for requests, and two other things; however, I'm still unclear as to its purpose. If you could, I'd appreciate an explanation.

    • @ThatsMyChad

      Te form is used for the active form of a verb, so it's honestly the difference between "To do" and "Do". It's a little hard to explain over text, but I have a video where I go into a little more detail on why Japanese has the Te Form called "How to become a Te form Ninja!"; I recommend you watch that first, and if you still have more questions I'm happy to answer ^_^

    You are inspiring, mate. The amount you study a day makes me want to push myself more. Also, I know this is an old video, but I want to know, how were you able to find out which schools were good to go to? I really don't want to get stuck in a school that is a poor fit for me or is just plain bad.

    • @ThatsMyChad

      Unfortunately you just gotta try them sometimes :P I kept trying until I found good ones. Genki I think was my third? And even then it was only a good program really until the intermediate level and only if you're not studying outside of class to move up in pace. Every school has it's quirks though.

    Hello, I watched your 〜て form video, and it was great, but I believe it only taught the conjugation.

    • @ThatsMyChad
      @ThatsMyChad  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well the Te form is meant to be the action itself.
      So for example, "To climb a mountain" and "Climb a mountain". This seems sort of vague, until you see how to use Te form with OTHER grammar pieces. Such as 〜ている meaning (Ing). You wouldn't say "To Climbing", it's "Climbing", the action ITSELF, in progress. Or 〜てすみませんでした, meaning "To be sorry for X action". You wouldn't say "I'm sorry for to yell", you'd say "I'm sorry for (the act of) yelling". It's literally just the act, and what surrounds it adds its context. Te form is used in so many different grammar pieces, that I can't explain all of them. But if you keep the idea of dropping the "to" from the dictionary form, you're pretty close to it's true meaning. Then just use it how it's used normally in different grammar pieces!

    Hey Chad. This is an excellent review and really helpful to me. I'm considering going to Genki either in Fukuoka or Tokyo. I was wondering as you said, how much Kanji does the school cover in Beginner two level and into Intermediate level? Just 80 Kanji doesn't sound great. Also I'm interested in intensive Japanese learning for 3-6 months, rather than culture as I know Japan well. Do you think Genki is a good fit?

    • @ThatsMyChad
      @ThatsMyChad  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Genki's culture classes are opt in's so you're good, the focus is language. Also, their kanji studying is their weakest link for sure. If you want good kanji studying you'll have to do it on your own :/ But it's still possible, I do it and most students study kanji on their own. Genki can hardly be beat for the full language package however. It's got it's rough bits but honestly even with my problems I wouldn't go to any other school.

    • @gregordavis
      @gregordavis 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chad - cheers thanks for the information. I saw they have a couple of weekly Kanji classes on the website, so hopefully that will help also. Probably I'll sign up with Genki in Tokyo or Fukuoka soon!

    • @ThatsMyChad
      @ThatsMyChad  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those classes are taught volunteer by college students, again, you'll need to study on your own haha that being said it's not hard, and you'll still be using them every single day so you'll get better, faster. But there really isn't anyways to seriously study kanji at this school currently.

    Hi Chad. Have you heard of JCLI 日本語学校?
    I'm looking to do 3 months at a language school in Japan and this one has the best price (that I've found so far). It's half the cost of three months at other schools, like GenkiJACs, that I've looked into.
    Wondering if you have heard of it? It sounds really good.

    • @ThatsMyChad
      @ThatsMyChad  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I actually haven't, but if the price difference is that high my assumption is it's targeted towards eastern language speakers and not western (there's a lot of schools cheaper than Genki and usually they have little to zero English support). However if you enjoy your time there let me know how it goes!

    • @keenbert
      @keenbert 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the info, I've decided to go with GenkiJACS. Because they are more flexible, as it they make it easy to come back and study with them and for different length of time. Would you recommend this program for someone who knows little to no Japanese? I've been searching for a good study abroad program and I'd only be able to go for a month so I want to make sure it's worth my time. Also did you make friends with this program? It sounds intimidating to be living alone in a foreign city where you have no friends or family

    • @ThatsMyChad
      @ThatsMyChad  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I actually recommend this place only to beginners. It's probably got the best beginner program I've ever personally been apart of. But don't do it from intermediate onwards. I have lots of Japanese friends I met outside the program so I never had a problem. I honestly didn't want to make friends with other people at the school because they only use English. If I'm paying money to be in Japan and learn the language I want to only use it. So I just made a lot of local friends and everyday after school I'd immediately leave and go skate with them or fish or something.

      It's certainly easier to go with the school, however the prices are higher than if you can speak enough Japanese to find your own accommodation. That being said a lot of landlords won't rent short term to foreigners for decent prices, so if you're not confident in being able to navigate the situation, I'd stick with Genki ^_^
