    This isn't a physical thing but I've recently unfriended a ton of people that I barely know on Facebook and Instagram and I felt the same catharsis as I would clearing my closet

    No you should USE the leftover paper in the half used notebook. Whenever a new semester starts in college, I tear out the old stuff and use the rest of the paper as if it were new and it's a money saver. I haven't bought paper or notebooks in 2 years

      Did you just use the other pages as they were, or did you do a diy with the rest of the notebook? If the latter, let me know if you have a tutorial video. I’d love to watch it.

    I love all these tips except when it comes to birthday cards etc... I always keep the latest one from my last birthday from people I care about (family members, friends etc) so I have those peoples hand writing since paper notes are so few and far between these days! I lost 3 grandparents in the last 3 years and I'm very very happy I have a last birthday card from each of them now that they're gone! Hope that makes sense! :)

    Aw I really liked this video but I would disagree about the old prom/formal dress and 5 year old half filled notebooks. For me reading through old notebooks and things I wrote years ago is so much fun, so I got 5 small/medium (like 40x40cm) clear plastic boxes and created different boxes for each 'time' in my life (like age 0-5, primary school, middle school, high school and age 18-21) and each box has birthday cards (only the really special ones) drawings, notebooks, even some other sentimental things like an old jewelry box I had when I was a kid and memorable schoolwork from those years. Then I just labeled the boxes and stored them together in the attic. It's a really organised, clean, minimal way of keeping my favourite memories while still being able to live my life without those things lying around my room. Just thought I'd write that in case anyone else wanted to keep those memorable things (but only the ones that truly make you happy!! :)) but still wants to live minimally; that really worked for me. But please for the love of god get rid of pens that don't work anymore!!! Haha

    Books that will never again be relevant to my life or that contain out-of-date information. That said, I do think it's valuable to keep an old dictionary around... at least if you are a literary person.

    • @gwirgalon3758
      @gwirgalon3758 7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      yes, because going through them looking for one word brings you the gift of others you didn't know were there, and because words' definitions ahve changed, or vocabulary disappeared in modern Google life. She's of a generation that never knew the deights of reading through dictionaries, or the pleasure of discovering a new word, that opens a door to new thinking...

    I have been watching minimalism inspiration videos while decluttering my bathroom. Chucking old makeup I never wear ( I used to put a lot of eye makeup on eery day and now I use about 4 product for my face only) so I really don't need 100 colors of eyeshadow. Sending decorative items that don't match/don't hold sentimental or monetary value to goodwill. Feels really good to have less items, thank you for sharing and inspiring others to share their journey. Gotta start somewhere!

  • @rickyboyd2919

    Don't throw away the school yearbooks. You are too young to know. They are worth keeping to review before attending high school reunions (refreshing your memory for names etc) and to show your kids one day when you have them that you were once young too and you will probably have at least one famous person in your year book. Great video otherwise.

    I remember a few years ago I went through a season of hard times and I kept getting things stolen from me. 2 laptops, clothes money. Then I had to suddenly move out and live in a much smaller space so almost all my furniture had to be gone in a matter of days, unable to wait for people to buy, I gave most of it away and the storage space I could afford was fairly small. I still thank God that this happened because it taught me that much of the stuff I had was just noise, not having a real use. Now that life is better I find myself holding on to things that I was once able to live freely without. Thanks for the inspiration. I do like having book though because screens irritate my eyes.

    Could you make a video on social minimalism? Like fb instagram but also just your social life in general... I always get so jealous when my friends from high school all hang out together and I don't get invited, but at the same time I'm too busy living my own life at uni and can't be bothered, but I still feel obliged to feel 'connected' with those old people... does this make sense? :/ you always give the most sensible and realistic advice, hopefully you could help me on this one as well xxxxxx

      Delete your social media accounts unless they are your source of income, easy as that. It's a huge waste of time to scroll through Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. It's also completely unnecessary to have, if you need to stay connected to someone you most likely already have their telephone number, email, Skype, whatever. Problem solved!

    • @YBizzy1
      @YBizzy1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Try to ask yourself, do I like hanging out with them ? Maybe they are not inviting you anymore not because they don't like you but because your answer is always (or mostly) "no". Of course you don't have to say yes to everything but when someone ask you 2x and the answer is no, the person probably won't even bother to ask a 3rd time. I am a medicine student so you know, very hard to hang out with highschool friends all the time. But I do my best to keep contact with them, even if it's just calls or see them once a month. Or you can simply invite your friends if you feel lonely ! There is nothing wrong about that !
      Now if you don't like those friends anymore and you want to turn the page, well I would suggest that you don't pay attention to them aka avoid the social medias, they can make you really jealous. But I think the best way to solve your problems is to face them not avoid them. So really think about the first question that I havz written ! 😃
      Btw English is not my native language so sorry for grammar/spelling mistakes

    I decluttered an old hobby I hadn't done in years and I never regretted it. It took up a lot of space and It was something I did perhaps twice a year. The space it gave me was so much better. Interestingly, I never refilled that space. It's empty and that brings me joy.

    My advice about the old old cards...
    Take pictures and throw them respectfully away so you have all the memories and no clutter.
    Same goes for kids arts and crafts, stuffed toys, baby clothes and other things that are of great sentimental value but have no place in your clutter free home :)

      Gwir Galon That's such a good idea! And I'm with you on the books - I'll always have a collection. Buuuut I have over 500 and I'm thinking about paring way down and keeping only the ones I absolutely love, and donating the rest so someone else can enjoy them. It's a very scary thought because I've collected them over my entire life 😕

      Christina Lynn super late reply, but perhaps selling them would be a good idea. At the same time, you get rid of the ones you don't want and get money to buy new ones (or save)

    I was delighted when mama gave me all her pictures related to me (they had 5 girls) and she was 84 yrs at the time. I went through them and gleefully tore up the ones that I had hated for years! What a relief! My favorite one to finally rip up was my 3rd grade picture. My teeth were bigger than my eyes and my hair looked like I had been on the losing end of a fight with a fan. haha! Mama knew it was bad, but she did not want to "hurt my feelings" and bought them anyway! She offered me the money instead of getting the pictures and I was thrilled, but at the last moment she called the school and they told me (via PA) to get the gastly pictures- Ruined my day- a stack of ugly ducklings for $$$$$ haha ( I LOVE YOU mama even if you can't read minds!)

    I disagree about the kitchen items that are rarely used. Some of them I use around specific time of the year (e.g. juicer in the fall when apples and pumpkins are in season or some items that are used for Christmas or Easter dishes preparation etc. ). Generally, I don't think that following the rule "haven't used smth in six months - throw it away" works that well. Not only for kitchenware but for cookbooks and clothes as well.
    About dictionaries - google is definitely not the best option! And professional dictionaries are not always available on the internet (if they are - usually in illegal form...). Of course, internet dictionaries are useful but sometimes they are just not enough.
    Don't get me wrong - it's great to declutter your space but thinking ahead is also a good idea. I don't want to throw out smth and then regret it later or end up buying the same thing :/
    For me decluttering is a two-sided process. On one hand it's about throwing out unnecessary & unused items, on the other, it's about purchasing things that will last me a long time so I don't have to buy and buy and buy...

    When I left my parent's hoarder environment (I'm not kidding or exaggerating), I felt more clarity at having brought only a few items and decided to reduce my belongings that I had at home. No matter what you throw out that you think you might regret, eventually, you won't miss it. The regret I feel is usually toward things I gave away that I could have sold for money... but beyond being annoyed that I missed out on a sale, I also don't mind having given them to people. The item itself wasn't important. It makes what would have only been a cast off feel more like a gift. To those items you have sentimental attachment, it probably is more difficult. However, when everything becomes sentimental, you have a problem. My parents live in a house where everything is sentimental or vital, and little of it really is.

    I always get sucked in by big sales and end up with extra things I don't really need or won't use. I remember I bought these boots because they were 50% off and were similar to a style of boot I had always wanted (similar but not quite the same). I think I knew deep down they weren't quite right when I bought them and 1 year later after wearing them once I finally donated them. Ugh I'm annoyed at myself for it but I'm slowly starting to learn from my mistakes. Thanks for the great video!

    I recently started decluttering my closet, and the easiest thing to do was the hanging part of the closet - I got rid of over half of the clothes I had there, it was surprisingly easy to get rid of clothes I haven't worn in months 😂 I keep mainly jackets, dresses and shirts there, though. I wish it was that easy with T-shirts - it's winter now and I have no idea what I'll be wearing in the summer, so that needs to wait until summer…

    I enjoyed your video. When you mentioned about socks without the mates. I solved the problem by buying white socks in pack and try to have about 20 pairs. That doesn't sound like getting rid of things. I wear socks without shoes in my home, and having several good pairs allows them to wear out slower. If I lose one I put the sock aside in the drawer and if another one is lost or worn out. It can be matched up.

      I get that. They are there for you to cuddle when you are alone and you can feel a sense of loyalty to them if they gave you comfort. Donating them to charity - if they're in good condition - can give them another chance to be loved. I now have only one stuffed toy and I could never part with her, a beautifully made bulldog, given to me by a dear friend during a tough time in my life and she wears my friend's fine scarf. Lady Marmalade is a keeper!
