Group I belong to does a yearly river cleanup, due to the really shallow water we built a custom pontoon barge we float downriver, just enough motor to steer it. Have people in canoes picking trash and bring it to us. Last year we remover 10 TONS of garbage and another 7 tons of scrap metal(old cars/appliances...) that we had to helicopter lift out after rigging it in slings!

When I grew up below Benbrook lake Dam, on river front property, the only plastic bottle of water brand in the world was Evian. There was a lot less trash back then, an locals still trashed the Trinity. As an outdoorsman I’ve been picking up trash since day one. I appreciate what you are trying to do!

Rio Grande Perch, or Texas Cichlid is what you caught there at your first stop in San Antonio. I grew up fishing there quite a bit and only live a few miles from there. Those fish can fight like hell and it's always fun to catch. You can catch them in many different bodies of water around San Antonio
They're native and all around south Texas, surprised none were caught in Austin, I've caught many there

that fish you caught in san antonio was a rio grande cichlid and looks like it could have been a record. the record is 11 inches and just over 2 lbs.

I have a video recommendation I think you should go on a walleye tour this spring and fish Detroit river Saginaw river and all the other big walleye rivers connected to Erie and Saint Clair and then move west to fish with the mindak brothers for big western eyes

I spent a year learning to fish on mainly one public retention pond a few minutes from my house. I have picked up MANY bags of trash and have successfully changed the vibe. I cut down vines, cleared paths, removed trash, and knocked down a lot of intrusive bank weeds. Now, it is a pleasure to not only fish, but I love seeing others taking advantage of my work and enjoying fishing in places they couldn’t last year! Even ONE person can make a HUGE DIFFERENCE!!

Unsure if anyone said it yet but it's a Rio Grande Cichlid and are native to the Rio Grande and Pecos river systems. They were also introduced to a number of waters in central Texas. (Inland Fisheries San Marcos/Austin District TP&W)

That fish in San Antonio was a native fish. Rio Grande Cichlid. I’ve fished that same spot at bracken park and caught one that probably broke the SA record those things put up a big time fight. They are also the most popular aquarium fish

The stripped bass you caught in Waco are actually hybrid stiped/white bass. They have them in several lakes in texas.

At some point, you gotta fish the lake worth nature preserve. The fishing is decent and you get to fish next to gators! Just remember to bring a boat or kayak because you aren’t allowed to fish from shore
Appreciate all the feedback and your fishing techniques from Texas I live in Oklahoma and have been wanting to fish Texas good to see some urban setting and the content on the lakes! Lake Eufaula in Oklahoma is home to some big bass it’s about 31/2 house from Texas!
Jon, the cichlid you caught in the San Antonio river, is a río grande cichlid, also called rio grande perch, it's the only native cichlid of the United states. It's actually native to San Antonio !! That was a great specimen!!! Congrats!!!

Waco might be the most underrated town in Texas. You have everything you need to be happy, and you don't have people like kayak lady acting like she owns the lake. I don't live there anymore but it was 100x better than living in Austin
The closer you get to Baylor is the more catfish, crappie, and carp. The father you go away from Baylor the more bass and etc will pop up
There's quite a few spots to park and walk around the SA River with decent success. Definitely becoming more of a popular spot in the past few years.
