They will soon be moving into a much more spacious 55 gallon with a diy basking platform on top (so Bowser can work on his tan more), from their current 29 gallon and your videos have helped me have a good understanding of filtration and tank health and I am now confident that I can diy an awesome filtration system without breaking the bank. I currently have a Fluval 107 canister filter and a hang on double waterfall filter (ugly with a way too strong flowing output) and also under gravel filtration because i figured why not so i know i will need to beef up the filtration because of the bigger tank and ive been trying to decide on what kind to make. I am diy-ing a surface skimmer currently to put the Fluval input tube down into to keep plant parts from clogging the input up as much so hopefully that works like i want it to and am making some fake rocks for the basking platform wall to hide the guts of the platform and make it prettier hopefully. Anyways, i just wanted to share my appreciations and bowsers tank stuff with you and hopefully you enjoyed reading this novel i have just written here and i wouldn't be mad if you had any advice or must watch videos you could direct me to that are also relevant to my situation possibly. Ok so if you are still reading this i will end by saying thank you for your passion and bye.
I love that filter. I saw these boards on Home Depot and they are inexpensive. Don't remember the price right now but it was cheap. Too bad I already have my glass lids. Lol
I don't know if you read all the comments, but on your last video this is exactly what I asked for. I have a 240 gallon on the way and I want to build an internal filter just like this. I know you've built filters like this in your past videos. I really like the moving bed filter you made.
I love internal filtration! The only filters I use are from your design from LONG ago built from pvc and strong pumps with an airline. Don't have to worry about water outside of the tank and I only have to clean them every 4 months!
I like the Slim Overflows because they take up very little space. I’m sure you would have been able to pipe them separately so both tanks were separate still with sumps, however there is nothing wrong with an internal filter. When done right you get a much easier to maintain system than with a sump.
This is really great. I'm sure you could find black acrylic and use that as the separator and use the cheap boards within the filter to save on cost. Black acrylic might make it look cleaner if you're not going for cheap cheap. I really love this idea and will definitely use this when I some day get a huge tank. I am not a fan of canisters at all and afraid of drilling a tank for a sump. Thank you, Joey, brilliant as always.
Unlike other youtubers , who use materials available at home to prove low cost of their build, Joe always shows the actual cost if you buy all new from store
WoW King! What an awesome idea, I've been researching sumps for days, & only now realise it can be safely inside, part of the tank. I might make my new tank wider, with full length glass sump along the back, extra partitions, (etc) & use a pump with built in UV light. Have you stopped using lava rock? Cheers!
It’s a great in tank method only thing I’d change is putting it on the back wall so it can be hidden behind the background. But I guess your doing it to show the filter in action.
If it were me I’d probably keep it where it’s at but just put like a cool piece of wood or something to cover it, so I can still see it when I want to, but something that looks fresh for other viewers! Putting it in the back is a good idea as well! That was just my thought :)
Very cool either way man, it's always nice to see the many ways you can do filtration in this hobby. I remember when garbage cans were innovative canister filters that could hold large volumes. This too is very nice.
Question, and sorry if it's already been asked and answered, but if the filter is designed for water to simply flow into the filter via gravity how do you keep it filtered when the water level drops below the filters mouth? Obviously the easy answer is to keep water levels consistent, but many of us in the hobby have periods where we find it impossible to do simple maintenance.
In top of that, if you don't want to see anything in the filter, you can paint that small portion in black, or maybe use some stickers so you don't have to go with paint... plenty options
Brilliant totally fantastic never thought of doing this thank you so much wow have two fx6 on mine pain in the arse disconnecting and dragging out from under the cabinet and not wild on sumps this is a game changer
Great design, we can adapt this to any tank, and hide the filter somehow. Your experience and budget keep us from giving this a think ! Hmm, undergravel model?

At least in my area, you can only buy a 4x8 sheet of the panels, they are running $60-70 per sheet and if you want eggcrate light diffuser, it's close to $30 for a 2x4 sheet. If for just one tank, not very affordable IMO. Even acrylic/plexiglass has went through the roof in price.
I got a 4x8 piece at Home Depot for $15 (it is white instead of clear). They had a couple of pieces that were dented and banged up a little at the bottom. Talked to the manager and he knocked the price down to $15. Did get sticker shock today looking at egg crate at Lowes (wasn't thinking far enough ahead to see what Home Depot had). There are some egg crate aquarium dividers on Amazon that don't look too expensive. If you don't need a full sheet of something (like in this project) if there are some banged up or damaged ones - it is always worth asking if they will discount it.
Awesome video! I've been inspired to create my own filter inside of an aquarium build im planning. Was thinking to have 3 sections separated by 2 baffles such as you have done. Section 1, main filtration, section 2, heater and section 3 return pump. Would you say it'd be fine to use section 2 in order to grow macroalgae even though the heater is in there?
