That second ring looks so like my engagement ring! It was my husband’s grandmothers circa 1945 and I’ve have the band repaired a few times so the original engraving isn’t complete anymore unfortunately. My jeweler told me I’d need to have the setting “built up” or the stones reset at some point because it’s getting worn down. The process was so cool to watch- thank you!
Today I searched Google for jewellery repairers in my area and this evening your video popped up 🧐 🤔 Your work is fascinating! New subscriber here :) The reason I was searching was because I lost a diamond out of my ring two weeks ago, I noticed it missing the morning after I had put my Christmas tree up. This morning I dismantled my Christmas tree. I shook the life out of the tree and what did I find on the floor, the diamond! Yay! It had been in the tree all along! I just knew it would be there! Now to get it re-set but I’m now wondering how much it will cost me lol
Watching such skill just makes me smile. I know absolutely nothing about repairing jewelry, but even my untrained eyes could see that this was a master at work.
As a bench jeweler myself I always think it's kind of funny when a customer wants to watch you do something to their jewelry. So much of the repair process can look destructive to someone who doesn't know what's happening. I do love seeing their reactions once you're done though!
So clever. Alchemy, Craft and design.. all rolled into one..Wonderful how a true Jeweller, can bring new life back to our old jewellery. We don't have to miss out on how sentimental it is to us , then.
Was a nice video to see. Many vids out there of glorious engagement rings being made, but this is the type of stuff jewelers do more of. I also like to leave prongs beefier like that. Time goes by fast and people do not come in for ring repairs often enough. Having more meat around the diamond ensures the customer can beat it up for longer.
Wonderful video - as always. I have a few questions/ observations: - I had no idea you could be this "rough" with diamonds, putting direct heat onto them, etc. How do you douse the ring if you had to do that? I guess the sudden temperature change could damage the stone? Do you even HAVE to douse the ring for the setting manipulations you did? - How and how often do you collect the shavings / filings? Can you reuse them? - when melting the gold in the crucible, was that real time or sped up? Does gold really melt this fast? - what does the brief warming of the mould opening do? Doesn't it cool back down while you melt the gold? How long does the metal cool in there until you can take it out with bare fingers? Your work is so very interesting, thank you for making these awesome videos!
Thanks so much for watching and I meant to reply earlier. - Diamonds are very scratch resistant as they are 10/10 on the hardness scale. It is possible for them to scorch but only if an incredible amount of heat is used. During my training I learned the proper threshold. - I collect shavings/filings every single day! I can't use them in their raw state but I have them all refined about once a year. - Melting gold is actually pretty quick, but I do believe I sped it up to like 125% for the video. -I didn't show the entire warming process on the video. I usually with hold a torch on it for a lot longer but for the sake of the video just showed the little clip. The mold will retain some heat which allows the gold to flow and drop in with less resistance. It usually cools within 5 minutes! Thanks again for watching and all the great questions! :)
Great Video! What do you call that First setting!? That was my Mom's Engagement ring and setting and I'm trying to explain the setting and no one understands what I'm talking about! The ring was lost three decades ago! I'm trying to explain to jewelers because I need one made for myself! Thank You! Xx
I bought loose diamonds and im looking for a great setting ring. Im not sure if i have the time to do something like this and i know i dont have the skills. Hats off to you sir.
Can a ring band be made thicker like this with 925 silver with moissanite stones? The band is thin on the underside and stones make it top heavy and it tips over a lot.
I can't wait to change my diamond. I got sold a really poorly cut, inferior stone. Since that, I've swatted up a lot on diamonds. It'll NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN!
I'm a fairly new subscriber but I am a huge fan already...quid pro quo...if you are resetting a stone that is more temperature sensitive say like a black opal or worse yet Ethiopian welo opal how would you solder the claws or anything close to the stone? Thanks I'm just a hobbyist that has hundreds of stones I need to set and wants to learn all I can...ty in advance
Hey Anthony, thanks for watching! In the case of heat sensitive stones, you would build up the prongs first without the stone set. Diamonds are nice because it’s easy to build tips on top of a stone, a little more difficult to do it with no stone set, but possible!
@@moderngoldsmith ty so much for the speedy reply...I'm a roofing sub contractor and sheetmetal mechanic and I my dream is to begin making jewelry,I shape and polish opal into cabochons (I think the spelling is right 😂) but am very interested in shifting gears towards smithing as I have hundreds of gems that need to be set and truly want to do so myself rather than pay someone to do so...that may be an excuse to make beautiful things (as you yourself do) which is why I have so many gems that need setting...long story short I really appreciate your videos as I am learning alot and if you have any more links or anything to help me learn to do what you do. Thanks again for everything... Anthony
Cost varies depending on repair needed also the complexity of the design (that can make it harder to repair). So there is no one price to fix a ring unfortunately
Not a jeweller, but I'd recommend taking it to your local jewellers and asking if it can be resized to fit. I'd go to an independent shop rather than a chain, especially in these times.
@@Teverell chains aren't all bad, but I don't disagree, I've had a mixed bag. Goldsmiths.co.uk is terrible. Clogau has pretty great customer service (I think they only repair their own rings though)
@@Stettafire I was suggesting an independent shop more to offer small businesses support they really need, but having said that, chains really can be a mixed bag and you're never certain to get served by a good, knowledgeable, person. Which isn't to say all chains are terrible, they're not!

I have to constantly remind myself while watching these that diamonds are extremely durable
it’s funny bc you’re like oh be careful with the diamond but then it’s like actually they’re so resilient
the ultimate “trust the process”

The new setting is much prettier and makes center stone look even bigger than old one.
Great job.

I really like it when you explain the process. Otherwise it is just a music video.
Wow! Did a lot more than just move a diamond!!!

Such a big investment in his workshops tools and equipment
Gorgeous outcome
It appears that the stone is happy to its new home. I've done the same to a stud earrings before.
An absolutely gorgeous ring, and the craftsmanship behind the creation of it was very enjoyable to watch, thank you!

I think its called an illusion setting!
I have one that is an heirloom. I love it.

Your show is EXCELLENT! Your work is exquisite!
I’m really enjoying watching the work you do. The process is really interesting and you’re very entertaining. Thank you!

I’m going to be honest- took me until the last 40 seconds to fully accept that you have to trust the process!
Omg I’m like 2 mins in and restraining myself from throwing my screen
Love those bubbles of gold ...

I have a ring like the first setting. I love it.
Love your videos, always chill and interesting. How come there's no commentary in this one?
hmeoscar giving my vocal chords a rest...ha! But in all seriousness just ran out of time. Thanks for watching!
It is very hard to re-tip prongs with the diamond too clise, but I know your expertise congrats.
Another Beautiful Ring 💍
Beautiful. Nice work!!!

Thanks for being here and the kind words!
I see why they often use gold/goldsmithing as analogy to life "polishing" people with hardships and struggles
❤️❤️❤️👌🏼
Magic
Happy you put the cut piece of ring shank in the crucible
Can u make a video of old ring changing the size of the stone but the ring still the same just changing the prongs design..
I'd love to know the story behind this one- I love your videos when they have voiceover!
I need you do make me a new setting!! I’m in awe💕❤️💕

I just watched a video of his where he uses “ring balls” to stabilize a ring: th-cam.com/video/Veqe5kCQ46Y/w-d-xo.html
I'm so glad you replaced that shank! Was getting a panic attack just looking at it lol.
Have you ever scratched or broke a stone before?
Very nice job 👍🏻

Amazing job.
It’s so beautiful
Excellent!
Gorgeous
No wonder why diamond is the hardest of them all
Looks great but what was wrong with the ring before
Is it possible to move a setting to a different band too? In cases where the ring is too small and there's not enough metal to size up?
Wait it kinda looks like that happens at the 5 minute mark
Great job
Waouh wonderful! 👏
Awesome vids keep it up 👍🏻

Personally I liked it before the switch. Awesome work nonetheless 👏
I used to be a jeweler....how do you keep your hands so clean??
I saw some putting the stones in water while they are using fire.
Amazing

Stunning. x

I wanted to do that but I was told it wasn't possible 😣
Do what?
Will this effect the diamond or a moissanite in any way?
