Medusa was a high priestess of Athena. Athena was angered when Medusa was raped by her uncle in her temple. The goddess turned Medusa into a monster, yet even so, the Olympians wouldn't let her go. They sent countless warriors to her island to murder her. Medusa was already pregnant with Poseidon's child. Her poor child Pegasus becomes the pet of the gods.
I love the nuance of Medusa. They implied a major, obvious power imbalance when Poseidon seduced her, but she's still a villain because she has all those statues of innocent victims in her basement. Her story is valid and she has a point to question the gods, but it doesn’t justify what she's choosing to do now. Love this series.
To be fair, a lot of those statues are not "innocent" victims. Some are countless men sent to murder her for glory and some are outright monsters. But eventually she does succumb to the darkness and use her power on innocents, which given her life it would be hard not to.
Except.. why are they in her basement? Think on it. In the myth, she was at home. People like Perseus came to her home, to attack her.... she never saught them out.
@@amaracrow0501 Yeah if they came to kill her, they deserved it. Even the original myth made her a victim, not a villain. She was born a monster, but Perseus still came to kill her for her head, she wasn't actively hunting people or anything.

Medusa was bullied for her religious beliefs then was appreciated by Poseidon before her own god curse her forever to kill people by sight alone. Medusa may be a victim but any semblance of humanity she once had is already gone before she killed Ferdinand along with Rick Riordan and his wife.
Today in college, I learned that Athena turned a person into a stag, then just to get eaten by his own dogs. Does this child’s not understand how much wrong Athena has did?! Edit: I think that I put in the wrong god but my point still stands
I read the entire story of Percy Jackson and honestly one of the few things I never liked is that they did not present the true story of Medusa, considering that she is a super clear example of the cruelty of the Gods
Well on the original myth she was born a monster and was only mortal of the three gorgon sisters, Medusa being cursed was something added later in other myth.
@@GoldenAngel6018 I mean she's still a victim of slaughter because a King wanted to get rid of Perseus sending him on an impossible quest that should've killed him.
@@danteabaddon True, but what did you expect him to do 😅? Had he faced her when she was awake, it would've garunteed the possibility of him being turned to stone. While it was a cold move on his part, it was still a smart move for Perseus to make given what he was up against.
With all due respect, but it is one of the worst interpretations of Medusa, she was never human nor a victim, Medusa was a monster from birth, and she had a completely consensual relationship with Poseidon, she killed innocent people because she hated humans
Just to be clear, Medusa being a victim is *NOT* the original version of the tale. In the original Greek version, she was one of many monsters that just always existed or came from Echidna, the mother of monsters. Echidna basically existed to create whatever “monster of the week” our designated ancient heroes would face. The “Medusa is a victim” narrative comes to us from the Roman writer Ovid, who had a lot of anti-authority views that he channeled into a series called “Metamorphosis” that told the stories of many people who were transformed against their will at the whims of gods in order to make a statement about corrupt higher power not caring for innocent normal people. His retelling of Medusa’s story is one of these. So, as I said, not the original still interesting and multilayered.

Whereas, the TV show wanted her to be a character from whom the trio learns something. They wanted her to be a survivor of the cruelty of the Gods. Anyways, overall I prefer this version more than the movie one bcoz its more like the books but for design, movie version is better
Allow me to explain cause y'all are confused: Kind of a TW The version in which Medusa is Athena's prestiess and gets r worded by Poseidon was written by a roman poet. In the original she was a Gorgon who got pinished for doing the thing with Poseidon in Athena's temple. The series combines these two versions, making Medusa a victim (tho I don't think a r__e victim)but also a villain.
Fun fact about Medusa: Ovid never described her as a Priestess Ovid, Metamorphoses 4. 790 ff (trans. Melville) (Roman epic C1st B.C. to C1st A.D.) : "Her [Medousa's] beauty was far-famed, the jealous hope of many a suitor, and of all her charms her hair was loveliest; so I was told by one who claimed to have seen her. She, it's said, was violated in Minerva's [Athena's] shrine by the Lord of the Sea [Poseidon]. Jupiter's [Zeus'] daughter [Athena] turned away and covered with her shield her virgin's eyes. And then for fitting punishment transformed the Gorgo's lovely hair to loathsome snakes. Minerva [Athena] still, to strike her foes with dread, upon her breastplate wears the snakes she made."
From Quora: There are two and a half versions of this myth: She and her two sisters were born gorgons, but Medusa chose her beauty over immortality The next two are basically the same, that she was a priestess of Athena and Poseidon raped her, transforming into a gorgon as a result, but there are wide differences between the reasoning Ovid, salty little man-baby he is, claimed that Medusa was a vain priestess who spurned Poseidon after teasing him with sex, then after being raped, Athena took the side of the man claiming that it’s Medusa’s fault for being so vain and enticing a god, so a hideous monster was her fate. Please, always remember, if Ovid wrote it, it’s probably full of crap The more likely version of the myth is that Medusa was a pious priestess who just so happened to be extremely beautiful, but hid within Athena’s clergy to protect herself from men. Poseidon, much like baby brother Zeus, never met a boundary he could respect. He rapes the priestess and before he can finish, Medusa begs Athena for salvation from men. She is turned into a gorgon, her gaze turning men to stone rather than be raped by man or god again So, either she’s born as a gorgon or it’s a consequence of being raped by Poseidon in Athena’s temple
Like the novel, Medusa's backstory is a modified version of Ovid's take on her myth. The writers deliberately kept it ambiguous if Medusa's relationship with Poseidon was completely consensual. In an interview with Variety, episode co-writer Jon Steinberg discussed these choices: "I like that the story perceives that relationship from Percy’s point of view. It’s not entirely clear: Did they love each other? It seems like they did, but what went wrong? Did anything go wrong? Is it possible that Medusa had an awful experience with Poseidon and Sally didn’t?"[3]
Rick Riordan, in his role as executive producer for the show, wanted to make Medusa more sympathetic and beautiful than her book counterpart. In the same interview, he said, "In Medusa’s point of view, the real curse wasn’t making her ugly. It was making her invisible. She has chosen, in this version, to own that. To be seen. To be elegant. She turns people into stone and uses that as art."[3]
Everyone is talking about how the medusa who was punished out of envy is not the original story of medusa yet no one is talking about why they made the decision to use that version in the show.
Why couldn’t we have Jessica Parker Kennedy as Medusa in the ORIGINAL movie? Just looking at these scenes, I already liked her more than Uma Thurman’s Medusa
I feel like this version of Medusa (very close to the original story from what I can tell) could have been very happy with simply being respected and treated with kindness rather than feared. She got a really raw deal from the very goddess she worshiped and has suffered and been feared ever since. If she didn't petrify all the innocent people that came her way, she could absolutely be a tragic victim with a healing heart instead of a tragic victim turned monster. Alas, that is not how her story goes.
Actually, that's not the "original" history According to the greek writers Hesiod and Apollodorus Medusa was a gorgon since birth and had a *consensual* relationship with Poseidon in a field of flowers It was the ROMAN writer Ovid who made this abuse version And she wasn't a Priestess Ovid, Metamorphoses 4. 790 ff (trans. Melville) (Roman epic C1st B.C. to C1st A.D.) : "Her [Medousa's] beauty was far-famed, the jealous hope of many a suitor, and of all her charms her hair was loveliest; so I was told by one who claimed to have seen her. A gorgon since birth who claimed to be more beautiful than Athena Pseudo-Apollodorus, Bibliotheca 2. 46 (trans. Aldrich) (Greek mythographer C2nd A.D.) : "It is affirmed by some that Medousa was beheaded because of Athena, for they say the Gorgon had been willing to be compared with Athena in beauty."
It sucks when you are considered the bad one when you are actually the victim one who have to deal with brainwashed people around you and destroying your reputation.
What you mean "brainwashed"? Pseudo-Apollodorus, Bibliotheca 2. 46 (trans. Aldrich) (Greek mythographer C2nd A.D.) : "It is affirmed by some that Medousa was beheaded because of Athena, for they say the Gorgon had been willing to be compared with Athena in beauty." It's ok for people to use the actual greek myth of Medusa instead of the roman myth from Ovid Ovid, Metamorphoses 4. 770 ff (trans. Melville) (Roman epic C1st B.C. to C1st A.D.) : "[Medousa (Medusa)] was violated in Minerva's [Athena's] shrine by the Lord of the Sea [Poseidon]. Jupiter's [Zeus'] daughter turned away and covered with her shield her virgin's eyes. And then for fitting punishment transformed the Gorgo's lovely hair to loathsome snakes."

OG Greek story was Gorgons being Monsters from birth with Medusa being only Mortal gorgon it was Ovid who changed Medusa backstory to explain Pegasus and Chrysaor birth Riordan found great drama in Ovid version for Percabeth
For those saying Ovid wrote this version so it’s not “canon”. Not really. Her SA version was around before him. But his version she was vain and seduced Poseidon. So it was her fault it happened. Also! This story was before Christianity, and no one is arguing about that interpretation of him being the savior. Even before that “Lucifer” was a misinterpretation by a man talking about Venus. And ppl since then made it canon.
I never could help but feel bad for Medusa. My wife and I grew up together and we liked reading and watching the same things. One of which was different ethnic mythologies. 20 years ago when we were 9, and what's ironic and uncanny is we didn't want to read the Greek mythos like an ordinary book. So to make reading it even more fun was looking in that book's table of contents of different Greek mythology individuals, we wrote them on paper, tore the paper to make each individual of the mythos a solo pick, put them in a left over McDonald's bag, take a name out when it was our turn (hers or mine). It was the 9th entry and her turn to pick. Who does she pull out...Medusa. lbvs😂😂😂 But what we didn't know was there are more than a few ways and tellings in Greek mythology. The librarian at our school told us. The first one of Medusa stories we red was she was born a gorgan and she preferred not to be sought out and to be left alone with her sisters. Her had became a trophy piece that a king wanted Percy to retrieve. Hermes, Hades, and Athena contributed in helping him kill her. The 2nd telling...smh, heartbreaking. And it has 2 versions as well but the most spoken of the 2 was Medusa was gorgeous and Athena was jealous. Medusa swore a vow of chastity to Athena that she'd never have sex. Men used to stalk her and follow her to Athena's temple and just watch her. Unfortunately, one of which was the lustful serial r*pist and Olympic god of the sea, whom Athena loathed vehemently. He made advances on Medusa (by the way, that's not her name. I can't immediately recall what it was but she was named Medusa after Athena transformed her). Medusa rejected him respectfully and told him her devotion to Athena, whom he loathed as well. And how dare a woman tell Posiedon, no? Especially a mortal woman? She tried to fight him off and run, but he caught up to her and decided to kill 2 birds with one stone, so to speak. Getting his rocks off by violating Medusa in the Athena's temple. And right when you think she'd steaming livid and go after her uncle for the gross defiling disrespect in her temple. She is happy, secretly so. And basically did her like the so called Christians often do to pregnant victims of r*pe...don't care and condemn them. Athena finally had a reason to hurt her, and mind you, this is shortly after the poor girl was r*ped. In pain and shock, she was still there. She hadn't moved. Medusa took no mercy on her. Transformed her into a gorgan, so now when man would look her in the face and eyes they'd nolonger see a fair maiden, they'd see a frightening monster. Turning into stone as they screamed in horror. Hurting her every time it happened. It got to the point where she just left and stayed on a island at a dangerous part of the sea, hoping no one would come looking for her. But over the many years before Percy was propositioned to find and behead her. Numerous men tried to find her. So much til the entry way of the cave and the path farther into it, Percy sees dozens of petrified stone statues. Even after all the years she made that innocent girl suffer as a lonely monster. She takes her hatred and evil a large leaping step forward to the absolute worst she could do to her. Taught Percy where she lived, how to get there, her powers, how to kill her, and provided the tools Percy would need. And he succeeded. Cutting her head of as she slept. The 2nd telling of this telling of what happened is what you're seeing in this scene. Even though Athena ignored her always, IN BOTH TELLINGS. Posiedon sees and hears Medusa. He still loathed Athena like she loathed him, but he didn't get with her to Athena. He and Medusa fell in love. Athena finds out. Curses Athena. Later helps Percy kill her. Gave him a special sword (the sword the book and the show says Posiedon gives Percy) and Hades helm of invisibility (the cap Athena 's daughter in the book and show has). They battle. He kills her. And in all tellings, her head becomes a temporary weapon for Percy. As her head was like any other decapitated head, but when held in front of someone the head would reanimate and her eyes would open. It's like Loki from norse mythology. He's often given a bad name but until you read the mythos, you won't most everything he did was out of retaliation and deep heartbreak and pain Odin caused him. Crazier than that, is Odin is supposed to be the wisest and not even he realized that the enemy against him at/on Ragnarok were comprised of the millions of people he did wrong and hurt. However, like Medusa, they are looked at as the evil monsters although they are victims. And those harrowed to be the good/the heroes are actually the real monsters.
I stopped watching the show but this part really saddens me. Stories are written and written by the powerful. I always wondered about stories that were told and why it was the truth. Medusa was so captivating that everyone who saw her would die. Why was this? Because she was just an amusement to the gods and their games. She was cursed due to her beauty and in return, she cursed all men who who desired only that. She wasn't evil just cruel. And who would blame her?
I felt as though the "heroes" didn't need to worry about Medusa's curse ability as long as she wore her hat. I believe it was a conscious choice on her part to reason w/ them. Now, remove it & all bets off. It prevented them from seeing her eyes until she wanted it to happen.
I find it completely impossible to see any incarnation of Medusa (regardless of media form) as a villain after knowing how she became like that. gRaped by a god and punshied by the god she followed for getting gRaped...like wtf?

Her story is valid and she has a point to question the gods, but it doesn’t justify what she's choosing to do now.
Love this series.
To be fair, a lot of those statues are not "innocent" victims. Some are countless men sent to murder her for glory and some are outright monsters. But eventually she does succumb to the darkness and use her power on innocents, which given her life it would be hard not to.
Well seduce is the wrong word because he's gone violent when she refused
Seduce is the wrong word. He raped her.....
Except.. why are they in her basement? Think on it. In the myth, she was at home. People like Perseus came to her home, to attack her.... she never saught them out.
@@amaracrow0501 Yeah if they came to kill her, they deserved it. Even the original myth made her a victim, not a villain. She was born a monster, but Perseus still came to kill her for her head, she wasn't actively hunting people or anything.
Brilliant voice on the Medusa actress! She mesmerizing yet haunting.
Her actress came a long way since Black Sails.
1:46 - 2:02 I love the cracks in her voice hear, it shows how despite seemingly coming to terms with her curse, she’s still hurt by it and the way she was treated overall.
I never heard it but her voice cracks when she says “me” when she talks about Athena punishing her. Like it still truly hurts her that the woman she loved the most turned her back on her

I feel empathy for Medusa. Lol, I was kind of annoyed when Annabeth called her a liar. Like, Annabeth please be quiet and let me hear Medusa side of her story. Do not trigger Medusa. Just talk it out. Have a therapy session. Also, Medusa be gaslighting Percy a bit, when she was cooking something on the gas stove. Lol, she is gaslighting while cooking on the gas stove. Medusa I could help you remove your trauma and vengeance and been a free independent strong lady that uses her snake for good things like Deuce from Monster High. Maybe ask Athena to try her back to normal.
TBF there are other versions of the story where Medusa is significantly less sympathetic
ok but if someone was talking shit about your mum u would be very angry and upset.
Medusa was bullied for her religious beliefs then was appreciated by Poseidon before her own god curse her forever to kill people by sight alone. Medusa may be a victim but any semblance of humanity she once had is already gone before she killed Ferdinand along with Rick Riordan and his wife.

The audacity! In her own house no less!
@@danteabaddon In the original myth she was not born evil
@@GoldenAngel6018 I mean she's still a victim of slaughter because a King wanted to get rid of Perseus sending him on an impossible quest that should've killed him.

@@danteabaddon True, but what did you expect him to do 😅? Had he faced her when she was awake, it would've garunteed the possibility of him being turned to stone. While it was a cold move on his part, it was still a smart move for Perseus to make given what he was up against.
To the date, one of the best intepretations of Medusa in live action, if not the best.
With all due respect, but it is one of the worst interpretations of Medusa, she was never human nor a victim, Medusa was a monster from birth, and she had a completely consensual relationship with Poseidon, she killed innocent people because she hated humans
@@EmyChulvethere’s MULTIPLE different versions of her origin story.
Thanks! Good to know the details!!

@Exillium70 if one existed far prior from the other "versions", then it's safe to say that's the original one.
I might be wrong here but... Seems to me that Medusa was giving them hospitality/shelter - a concept that Zeus himself insisted on, and Annabeth was being extremely - though reasonably - rude
I dont think she ever intended just to give the trio "hospitality/shelter" . She had her ulterior motives with befriending Percy and the others. Also, the way u said that part about Zeus tells me that u havent read the books yet. Not saying its a bad thing; But now its understandable why u thought Medusa just wanted to give them shelter.

this medusa has more story than the movie version i love this medusa than the movie
Allow me to explain cause y'all are confused:
Kind of a TW
The version in which Medusa is Athena's prestiess and gets r worded by Poseidon was written by a roman poet. In the original she was a Gorgon who got pinished for doing the thing with Poseidon in Athena's temple. The series combines these two versions, making Medusa a victim (tho I don't think a r__e victim)but also a villain.
Fun fact about Medusa: Ovid never described her as a Priestess
Ovid, Metamorphoses 4. 790 ff (trans. Melville) (Roman epic C1st B.C. to C1st A.D.) :
"Her [Medousa's] beauty was far-famed, the jealous hope of many a suitor, and of all her charms her hair was loveliest; so I was told by one who claimed to have seen her.
From Quora:
There are two and a half versions of this myth:
She and her two sisters were born gorgons, but Medusa chose her beauty over immortality
The next two are basically the same, that she was a priestess of Athena and Poseidon raped her, transforming into a gorgon as a result, but there are wide differences between the reasoning
Ovid, salty little man-baby he is, claimed that Medusa was a vain priestess who spurned Poseidon after teasing him with sex, then after being raped, Athena took the side of the man claiming that it’s Medusa’s fault for being so vain and enticing a god, so a hideous monster was her fate. Please, always remember, if Ovid wrote it, it’s probably full of crap
The more likely version of the myth is that Medusa was a pious priestess who just so happened to be extremely beautiful, but hid within Athena’s clergy to protect herself from men. Poseidon, much like baby brother Zeus, never met a boundary he could respect. He rapes the priestess and before he can finish, Medusa begs Athena for salvation from men. She is turned into a gorgon, her gaze turning men to stone rather than be raped by man or god again
So, either she’s born as a gorgon or it’s a consequence of being raped by Poseidon in Athena’s temple
0:33 exactly what The trio wanted at that time , shelter
You call me a liar but were you there little girl?

I feel like this version of Medusa (very close to the original story from what I can tell) could have been very happy with simply being respected and treated with kindness rather than feared. She got a really raw deal from the very goddess she worshiped and has suffered and been feared ever since. If she didn't petrify all the innocent people that came her way, she could absolutely be a tragic victim with a healing heart instead of a tragic victim turned monster. Alas, that is not how her story goes.
Actually, that's not the "original" history
According to the greek writers Hesiod and Apollodorus Medusa was a gorgon since birth and had a *consensual* relationship with Poseidon in a field of flowers
It was the ROMAN writer Ovid who made this abuse version
And she wasn't a Priestess
Ovid, Metamorphoses 4. 790 ff (trans. Melville) (Roman epic C1st B.C. to C1st A.D.) :

Pseudo-Apollodorus, Bibliotheca 2. 46 (trans. Aldrich) (Greek mythographer C2nd A.D.) :
"It is affirmed by some that Medousa was beheaded because of Athena, for they say the Gorgon had been willing to be compared with Athena in beauty."

Athena's Temple is in Kentucky. Why?
In th movies, not in this TV series. But it's said that it's only a replica tho, not th original 1
To be clear. I wasn't referring the movie. I was referring to a temple in America, Kentucky. I just found out about it. Very unusual
Who does she pull out...Medusa. lbvs😂😂😂
But what we didn't know was there are more than a few ways and tellings in Greek mythology.
Whenever they would zoom to her face, i'd close my eyes, lol. Better safe than sorry. 😂
Even with snakes for hair she's beautiful

Medusa is a personification of first decan Scorpio, Dolphin. It is a female snake decan, and the premise comes from averted eyes, intolerance of totalitarian authority, and the inability to be impressed by much of anything. Marie Antoinette was this decan and her head was removed. Hillary Clinton is also this decan, and she has been characterized as Medusa. This decan can also have large calf muscles that run to the ankles,... The best attribute, is they are very commonly known as 'queens' when they become successful at anything.
