The Porsche 356 will be back soon!!! I am waiting for more panels to arrive from Trevors hammer works, they will be here soon! until then, what shall we play with next?!
I first came here purely for the Porsche 356 rebuild. Then I came here for the VW Beetle. Then I came here for the VW van. Then I came here for Triumph. Then I came here for the Ranalah. Then I came here for the oversized Spanner. Then I came here for the random visits to the most accomplished artisans that you showcase. Then I realised that I actually came here for your (and John’s) most entertaining dialogue as you guys attempt to fix broken s#!t 🤣. Seriously though, I truly appreciate you sharing your passion 🙏
Hi Dom, I live in Huddersfield and my son is the parts manager at the Land Rover Centre, but I am thinking you got the parts via a different Land Rover Centre? There are probably lots up and down the country. Anyhow, you've gone and done it now to be sure. In my humble opinion, all Land Rovers, irrespective of model, are for people who really want one, love them to bits, and are not a bit bothered by how many times they break and how much it costs to fix them. At least you and John are a pretty capable team, so labour may not be an issue, but parts are just horrendously expensive for what they are. Some of the repair bills my son tells me about would make your eyes water, but people pay them because they love their vehicles.
Hi Dom, I was always taught when bleeding brakes, to start with the wheel furthest away from the master cylinder and work towards it. I also can remember when Land Rovers were well built, simple and reliable!
As a bike enthusiast, I would like to see you make a start on restoring one of the machines you already have. I enjoyed the Triumph build but would prefer to see a non-customised restoration, preferably the older bike rather than the A10, although I'm sure that it would be easier to get any parts needed for that one. I also know that you like a "well used" look, but I would like to see you try to do a full-on concours restoration. At the end of the day though, they are your machines and you are entitled to do with them what you will. Another thought is that I have really enjoyed watching youtube videos about Cyclecarts. They look real fun and I'm sure that you and John could have a great time choosing a design and building one. Not too expensive, a super community of enthusiasts and a project that would ideally fit your combined skill sets. Making a body for a suitable Cyclecart would also enable you to practise some panel forming on your Ranalaghs. Best wishes.
Good tip, for any car; ABS pump is a mechanical device, needs to be used periodically. I always test it every few months by ramming the brakes on in a safe place, eg coming to a stop on a straight road expecting a pull to a left or right. Get the pump working so you know it works in a controlled environment, so,you know it works when you need it.
Top tip Dom, buy yourself a Nanocom Evolution set up for the Defender. It can test operate many functions such as the lights, wipers, washers heater plus much more via the touchscreen. It can even operate the ABS pump with the car stationary to bleed the brakes without an assistant or the need for the bleed pump kit you bought. Good luck from a fellow Land owner(Disco 3 V8 petrol)
Hi Dom, I recerecently discovered your channel. Welcome to Defender ownership. I bought my first, a 1999 300 Tdi about 12 years ago, other than a new chassis it has been trouble free. I also bought a 110 TDCi last September, it is the same age as your 90. So far the only issue has been a new Starter Motor that at was covered under warranty from the garage I bought it from. Good luck and enjoy, don’t forget to wave to other Defender drivers!
Nice Landy Dom, been down the exact same route with a 2006 Defender, one with the Transit engine ( Puma) . After replacing everything I found it was the ABS pump..£3k quoted by the main dealer! Like you a second hand one did the job...but they are really hard to find. Enjoy your new truck...with John's help of course! Cheers Steve
I love watching you and John ‘work’ / ‘banter’ together, you make a great team and your personalities just complement each other. More great content and so much fun, keep up the great work.
Love my Defender 110 County SW, Dom - had it from new and 30 year anniversary this September. Never had any brake system issues - apart from the usual changing the pads....good luck with your 90....
Good that you found a second hand ABS unit. Imagine if that was my vehicle with the same problem in outback Australia. It would be stuck in a garage somewhere for weeks or months even! I understand why people are attracted to Land Rovers but it is not based on logic or common sense. Having said that this was an enjoyable video.👍
I absolutely appreciate the way the both of you work together! There is so much positivity in you guys being together and on this channel anyway - very relaxing :)
Very lucky on the ABS: I was working as Line Side Support Engineer at Tata Motors and, on occasion, got called to re-pair various modules (ABS, Instrument Cluster, Traction Battery and various driveline parts) and this required not only the Line Side commissioning tool but also knowledge of which byte in the main ECU to reset to allow pairing as the security system was setup to only allow pairing once, i.e., during initial vehicle build.
I've only ever used a rubber pipe with a valve in the end single handed. never had an issue. Also many years ago you could buy replacement bleed nipples with a built in valve, seemed like a great idea to me.
At least the most imprtant and most used part of the Rand Lover works .... the bonnet release cable. Welcome to the Solihull Bonnets Up Club. Enough of that now... glad to hear its back to the 356 soon.
You can get can get some wabco spares from LR parts suppliers. Looks similar to the unit in a Disco 2. Suggest you also invest in a Nanocom, makes fault finding and resetting of electronics and bleeding a whole lot easier.
Hi Dom' and hello Jon . Wow ! Talk about dodging the bullet !!!!! Well done ! So how much cheaper was this ? I guess you bought this at the right price because of the fault ? Cheers !
Top tip. The abs pump for the 2.4 is the same as the td5 discovery. Even though the ports are labelled differently, so long as you connect the pipes in the same order and position as the original, they work exactly the same. As a result I have a reconditioned abs pump in the shed that I’d bought thinking the disco one would never work.
Used a pressure bleeder on my Mini R53 when I swapped over braided stainless steel brake fluid lines at the calipers. Made the job easier, cleaner and faster than the old press the pedal method. Plus I was able to do it solo so I didn't mentally scar my brake pedal assistant for life when things would go sideways on the old school method.
I’m sad not only do you have a 365 now to rub salt into the wounds you gone and acquired a Landi. I will have to continue to dream and live my life vicariously live my life through your channel.
Dom don't through the electronic side of the old abs unit away as data can still be copied from it by just plug it back in to the car and a diagnostic scanner can read all of its info just in case you do have abs coding issues with the new one cheers from down under
I'm still waiting to hear that Porsche come clattering into life. A pal of mine used to have a rather aged 911, which I named Clara Clatterbucket because of the sound. 😆 I also read an article about the old 4-cylinder version which the author described as "sounding like an accident in a saucepan cupboard".
My first ever car was a defender, but more rustic than yours Dom,as it was ex MID and a series 2a. Great job boys and I was looking at buying one of those brake bleeders but couldn't work out how they worked, so ya for showing me. Will get one now. Re the project, get back on the Porche😎. Thanks fellas
Had to change mine on my 02 Defender. Had to take wing off. Replaced it with a 2nd had Disco one. They are a direct replacement, just ignore the sticker that says which pipe goes where!
Dom, where is the bus, is it finished , can we see it ? Last week you left us enjoying watching you sign writing, this week nothing, no mention of the bus. Also, glad to hear you will be getting back to the Porsche. I am a pensioner and worry I won't live long enough to see it drive out of your workshop !
Having that 356 over your shoulder for the final shot caught the eyes of a lot of us but I think @aceadam said it best: " I came for the Porsche, but I stayed for the Dom"...and I'll add, for the Jon, as well.
Hi Dominic, it was nice to have a quick chat with at the NEC all be it brief, I was with Ant Anstead tasting wine when you came over, also seen you later in the bar, I am friends with Sarah Crabtree, Paul Cowland and Ant.
Hi dom, still loving the content and the variety of projects, but, your new brake bleeding toy is not new, being a child from the late 50's I still have my Gunsons easy bleed and I'm still using it, I recently single handedly bled the clutch on my 1960 948 triumph herald. Its virtually the same as your new tool ,the only difference is that you pressurise the system using your spare tyre. They still pop up for sale on Ebay, keep up the good work.

That ABS unit should have come apart easier than that. The corrosion made your job harder and led to the breakage I expect. Probably not had a brake fluid flush for quite a few years leading to water absorption and then rust. I would expect the rest of your braking system is in a similar state!
Dom, congratulations for becoming a true English Gent, nothing against German stuff, (Don’t mention the war), but Defenders are just the best 4x4xfar, it’s undeniable…I ❤ my 110 Wolf and it takes me everywhere and never fails me…well done sir.
This is very worrisome. Last fall, as were leaving our summer place, I found the brake reservoir on my ‘98 Discovery empty. I pressurized with a brake bleeder and it gushed out of somewhere on the firewall but I had no time to investigate further.
Great stuff as always Dom. such a joy when you and John are together. However, waiting for panels? Hmm 🤔 no excuse! There’s plenty of other things to get on with on the Porsche! Engine rebuild? Sorting out interior parts?
Haha I am a bit far from worrying about the engine and interior!! It’s not an excuse, I need to be methodical with the process, jumping around on different parts won’t help me!
My friend was a master butcher and explained to me that everything in a pig is used, except for the sqeak. That was until land rover used the squeak in the brakes! 😂😂😂 The abs will eventually suffer from corrosion, as the anti corrosion in the brake fluid fails to work over time. To avoid such issues you need to replace the brake fluid every two years.
I has a TD5 after years of driving lightweights in the military...loved it until it started switching itself off at 60mph....not a quick fix as apparently engines and gearboxes were set up at the factory as one unit?....swapped it for a Freelander that spent two months in the dealership and came back with a third of the engine replaced before they found/replaced the offending part......wish they'd go back to basics.
Sorry dom but nothing like bleeding brakes the old fashion way I would say the "new" ABS system would get the code from the ECU...John is a awesome friend of yours brilliant video great video❤
Was going to upgrade my early defender to a newer one, but ive changed my mind after seeing this video will stick with my old one for what i use it for😂, love this chanel keep up the good work 👏

Surely there was more to it than an impulse buy? At least you won't be short of material for your channel now! (PS - now very glad I don't have ABS on mine!)
It's taken me 8 years working almost every day to ALMOST finish my '64C. You should get back to yours. There's all sorts of parts you can work on (trakes, engine, transaxle) while waiting for body panels.
If you're looking for something to entertain us with, there's always sign writing. Can't get enough of you just painting something arty and talking to us as you go 🤩

That helps if you save time (and fluid) are flushing out the old but Dom had done that already by driving about!
Anything after the 200 Tdi is going to be progressively more difficult to fix
That was the way I was taught, the longest line away from the master cylinder. It worked anyway which is the important bit - another enjoyable video 👍

Great video, your both brilliant at what you achieve. Keep them coming.
You can remove the abs pump without taking the master and booster out. Just a bit of a squeeze. Loosening the pedal box is the key
Great video Dom. Hope you get the money back on parts not needed. Looks a lovely land rover.
Well, I never had Dom name checking Mat Armstrong on my bingo card 😅😉
Great stuff, love watching you guys struggle. My series 2 doesn't have those problems. Old school braking and proper driving.
John is a brilliant addition to any vid
I totally agree!
Hey Dom & John, Since you both specialize in the unique and occasionally obsolete technologies, maybe this ABS Pump is another opportunity ? Perhaps you might see about rebuilding the old one or upgrading to a more current pump from the LR parts catalog by modifying the pedal box that was compromising your fitment of replacement part ? At least figure out how you should have disassembled the module without damages to electrical components and see if there are seals that could be replaced to rebuild old unit as a spare or for resale to other afflicted LR Defender owners ?
