AWESOME Off-Road Arizona Trail Crown King to Prescott

- This is a look at one of the longer off-road dirt trail adventures you will go on in Arizona. This starts up the I17 north of Black Canyon City at the Bumble Bee Exit and goes up the Bradshaw Mountains to Crown King. Once we get to Crown King we take the Senator Highway from Crown King to Prescott. That off-road trail is rough and you do need a 4x4. It takes about 2.5 hours with no stops. I would call the Senator Hwy in Arizona is more of Jeep Trail than a Dirt Road.

@Bryson Tyson happy to help =)
Ol' Smokie and his family lived there in Cleeter, back in the 1960s. My dad and mom, had to shelter at their house, during a snow storm while deer hunting, our old Ford truck almost slid off a cliff. We would stop every time we'd go up to Crown King.
Many Thanks to Smokie for helping my parents!
Bet the family is still there,🙂
There was also a family with 7 girls that lived along the river and the mom made the road with a tractor up to Crown King. That homestead was up from Lake Pleasant about 1/2 way up to Crown King.
Thanks
Which homestead? Been to DeSoto there?
That " mine shaft "was the tunnel for the train used to move more from crown king to Mayer. You were driving on the old train bed.Over time it has collapsed but you can walk into it and see the soot on the walls and ceiling.
Senator hiway was a stage route and was the main/only way for supplies to get to Crown King from Prescott.
It's a nice vid but there's a handful of inaccuracys and lack of historical info. Like the fact the road was once a narrow gauge RR with switchbacks and yes the tunnel😃
@@raysullenberger5626 This guy is going out there producing great content & documenting rural arizona way more than 99.9% of the state ever could. If you have extra info or corrections definitely post 'em though!
Very interested pieces of history Stephen thank you
FINALY someone who actually shows where the trails they're driving are, I know the area pretty well already but still so helpful
I used to live in Mayer and would come out to Crown King all the time in a high-top van. This is definitely bringing back some memories
I spend a loner of weekends in Crown King about 25-40 years ago, those were good times. That last right turn over the bridge and view of the general store brought back a flood of memories. Thanks. Too bad it got so popular.
looks like a off roader`s paradise! need to bucket list this adventure! ...happy trails always...
This was so fun to watch. Beautiful footage. We just got back from Prescott. I'm not that brave traveling this way. Wow! Just beautiful.😍
Yes ! I used to go here many times ! Great memories ! Thanks for posting this!
Love watching your videos. Been in Arizona all my life, and you take me to places I haven’t been. Very interesting. Thanks.

Bumblebee/Crown KIng...one of my favorite little roadtrips Because you need to make way for vehicles traveling in the opposite direction, this trip takes longer than one might anticipate. I personally would not go up to Crown King without a 4WD. I wont lie, some of the road portions from Crown King to Prescott looks like a goat path.
Stock suv like a 4Runner? Jeep Cherokee?
@@frasiec either of those would be fine
@@lileelisamc.4722 what a about a ram rebel?
The road from Cleator to Crown King mostly follows the original railway bed. And the Senator Highway is the original stagecoach trail from Crown King to Prescott. The ranger's residence originally was the stagecoach stop along the trail.
Hey there it’s called palace station
Looks like a fun trip. Thanks for the ride.
Looking south is looking toward the Phoenix area. California is west. Also, not a white tail deer . It’s a Mule deer. Bagdad is 60 miles west.
Look at the ears....It's a mulie for sure.
Lol
Wow, what trip down memory lane this was. I was last there in 1979.
Where you at now? My family use to go all over there in the eighties and nineties.
Excellent video man, thanks so much!
I've done this one! So much fun. Its beautiful in the spring!
I’m here in 2024 Jeff and this one is a Classic Vid
Looks like great fun, nice trail.
I love Prescott... my grandfather had a place in Yavapai hills for about 30 years... though he passed recently I've made one trip back already and plan to make more... even thought about moving there... lol... love that place!!!... saw terminator 2 back in the day when they still only had the 2 little theaters...I think I'm moving... so tired of the weather here in Washington... peace...
When I went to Crown King in 1982 circa. There was just that one big general store, with a few getaway cabins around. After you passed threw that a forest ranger road went on to Presscott. There was one nice oak covered valley 10 miles from Presscott with a ranger station cabin. Very cool but the road gets very difficult after that. In our Toyota truck it was too difficult to keep on going. We found a road going east and were able to get out to a hwy. To many people nowdays to suite me. Cary in Tucson
Lots of GOLD in the Bradshaws!
My mining partner and I used to tell people that only there's too much damned dirt mixed in with it :D
Hey bud, just found your channel and subscribed we just moved to AZ end of 2017 and am working on getting a 4WD vehicle to explore. Appreciate your channel and local info on this awesome state! Thank You!!! 👍👊
Thoroughly enjoyed your tour, great clarity & great adventure. I'm touring your Prescott video next.
Just found this; aw memories! This is the route where our axle broke and we flipped the Bronco!
Jeez, it's been years since I've been up that road. Many years ago my brother and I used to go visit with old Tommy Cleator when he was still alive. My niece was a toddler then and to her Tommy was Santa Claus and he definitely looked the part.
Loved this video, very well done. I’ve heard about Crown King but never been there. Fire was near there this summer I think.
I use to fly in from Minneapolis during my Spring break when I was teaching and backpack in from Crown King for about a week. Incredibly beautiful area.
G'day mate
Keep it up mate
Love your shows
Now that's ARIZONA 💯 👌 🔥 🙌 😎
Thanks for the video I live Minnesota I grew up in az I’ve been to crown king several times wow thanks
Thanks for this one, going to Arizona next april/may. Will drive this road for sure if its open.
It makes me homesick to watch your videos of my 🏡 home state of Arizona, but keep 'em coming cuz I love them.
Great video, beautiful scenery..
Looks like an awesome ride to do on my mountain bike. A little biking, a little camping.
I did that trip years ago. Still great memories! Thanks for the vid
Ah yes, love that land, beautiful blue sky,Arizona,my adopted home state.
Yep. Mine as well, I left 7 years ago and have regretted it ever since. One day, I'll go back out West for good, Oklahoma is too humid lol
It's beautiful. Do you happen to know the name of the plant/flower at 10:28?
Ready to head out on the back trail from Lake Pleasant in my Odes Dominator. Can't wait to experience the trail and terrain and maybe an adult beverage in Crown King...maybe. :)
I was wondering about the road through here. Have not spent any time in crown king. Nice to know there is a road.
Very nice, thanks for sharing.
This was very good to see as I would not venture this. I’d be afraid to get a flat or get stuck. I would recommend a small caravan of friends go so you can help one another. Just thinking like a girl, lol.
IF YOU HAVEN'T ALREADY...YOU SHOULD DO A VIDEO OF THE APACHE TRAIL....STARTING FROM APACHE JUNCTION ALL THE WAY TO ROOSEVELT LAKE...ITS A BEAUTIFUL DRIVE...LOTS OF HISTORY
That is freakin AWESOME!!!
Took my H1 Hummer from Lake Pleasant on the back road to Crown King. Wholly shit took 3 hours to go 20 miles. It’s a no BS trail. Don’t go alone many people broke down or get stuck.
How far north of Lake Pleasant is it OK? Looking for land. Place to take my Pinzgauer but still find fishing.
Thanks for sharing.... never ventured so far out so this looks scary to me.
Wow. That is an awesome trail.
Been on that road (trail). Awesome day trip, bring a lunch.
You should pick up some fudge from the crown king general store. It’s to die for!
I never pass a fudge store. Sedona has good fudge and Cabelas.
Mt lemmon also
That looks like a great atv road!
I live in Tucson Arizona 😁 Beautiful,no people around I love it , FOLK'S 🧦
What are your favorite areas of Tucson if you wanna have some room between you and your neighbors. But not too far out.
Try the back way from Lake Pleasant you need at least a 4x4 with posi or lockers. quads, dirt bikes and side by side have no problem
I used to take a 6 cylinder 2wd GMC up that way to gold mine and hunt. There was a fork we called Four Wheel Drive and Wish You Had Four Wheel Drive. Just need a little running start ;)
That was great never seen that area of Arizona. Thanks for the coverage.
Nice video nice ride, thx for video!!
Not a bad idea for a trip. Cool video
Can't believe you didn't go in the Cleetor Yacht Club or Crown King Saloon and get some footage and a beer inside. The food at the Saloon is awesome too.
Love the Salloon!
Tell Darlene Patrick said Hi!👍😎
I had a beer at the saloon. Pretty and cool area!
The hamburgers are too die for, very yummy
You may want to try airing down your tires next time for a smoother ride.
Gold in them rivers .
Yep there’s still a lot of gold in the Bradshaw’s.
Crown King is a cool place, the bar is really fun. If you get out of line in that town, they tie you to the big tree in the center of town and let you sit overnight, rather than calling the police. This place literally does not call 911. The citizens handle the business at hand. Awesome! Oh and just imagine doing that trip by horse and buggy. They did it way back when and the history of this area is quite inspiring. Oh and I'm going out on a limb here, but what kind of vibrator does a deer use? A deerdo. Hardy har har...
Is the drive from 17 to Crown King doable without 4WD?
@@wendytravis6427 Yes, but you'll want to start in Mayer. Off HWY 69, there's a dirt road going to Cleator and Crown King - that's the one you want. UPS drives on that road all the time, and cars too. You can make it, but many folks pop tires (just be careful) when they try. Don't even consider the back way without 4wd and some larger sized balls - or eggs in your case. :) It's a fun trip, but never forget to take your gun and extra ammo, water, etc.
I was thinking,” turn the radio down so I can concentrate!”
Only now became aware of this video. Thanks for providing!!! Do you think I could make this trail with my full size truck Silverado?
I fought a wildfire in that town years ago called the gladiator fire.
Thank you, because of you people's homes were saved, animals lived, and people got to see what people do when they work like hell to help others. Seriously, you guys are heros in my view. Period.
There’s a much tougher road from Lake Pleasant to Crown King by way of oro belle. They used to have a dirt bike race there back in the early ‘70’s.
yes there was a pretty big fire this last yrs up in the goodwin area
Beautiful! I love high desert. Does that area ever get snow?
CROWN KING gets snow, occasionally we get snow down to 3000 feet.
Beautiful country.
I'm from Australia and we have heaps of places like that here but once travel restrictions are over i will be making my way over to the US and do that drive.
I love off roading.
Technically it is just Bumble Bee, not "The" Bumble Bee.
Im taking this road this weekend
The road is really rough, you definitely need a 4x4. Worth the trip
Believe it or not, I used to drive up there in a 2wd van. Almost got stuck more than once though
Thanks for the ride. Please pick me up on your way back.
Your cover picture for crown King is actually cleaner
Love the views, definitely not what you expect from a desert state. My wife would be white knocking that ride, and love statement "just past the interchange " not on that road haha.
Love to take an ADV bike through there.
Nice ride, thanks.
Loved this drive. My husband and I made many trips to Crown King in the 80's & 90's. There used to be a road from Crown King to Lake Pleasant. It was pretty rough in those days. Came out to Castle Hot Springs Resort which I hear is back in business. Thanks for your videos, brings back many good memories.
That road still exists and is NOT 2WD friendly in the least! 4WD is a most definite requirement.
Its still there.
There's also a little Oasis back there that you probably don't know about.
Used to be our only way down to the Valley from Prescott decades ago
Really enjoyed the video, I'd like to do the trail one day for sure
The thing uncalled a old mine shaft on the road to crown king was actually the old train tunnel that went through the mountain. Thats a old train route.
looks alright. i think i'll try it since it's Spring and i don't get out much.
We used to ride our quads through that whole area and found a ton of abandoned mines. I wanna say there was a Turkey Mine, Desoto.... and others. We'd pitch a tent at the entrance in the middle of summer and have to sleep with a blanket. I think I heard some kid was on drugs and died and they were all sealed off.
Minute 14:50 to the left
We building a log 🪵 cabin
I love Groom Creeck
I went that way years ago in November and it was snowing I barely made it to crown king
More, more, more Jeff.
Mule deer at 11:30
Yep. The ears alone show that.
Great trail riding there like in wickenburg
My god people, who cares how the person pronounces names. Its a TH-cam video, not a high dollar Hollywood film jeez. Comment about the trip or scenery. Anyways, its cool how this road goes from the desert floor off the I-17 up to crown king which i believe sits close to 7,000 ft in elevation. Cactus to pine trees.. love the outdoors!
Do the back way to crown king. You will love it
No footage of crossing the Hassayampa? The old mill?
Much nicer than our Vegas trails
Went deer hunting at crown king with my uncles back in the 50s and 60s.
Yes there was a fire in Crown King 2012. In the area of 17,000 acres (did not find total acreage consumption)
I like your camera. What make & model is it, if you don't mind me asking? Enjoyed your video. I hope to do the back roads of America someday soon.
“The hills have eyes”
Some of those areas seem kind of tight. Think a newer raptor would fit?
Love there pickled bloody Mary's.
i live in the bradshaw mountains the side that faces dewey, if you ever want to go to some cool mine lmk ill send you the directions to them or the plane crash but the plane crash is a hike, or if you would want to see the abandoned bunker either
I live on the dewy humboldt side of the bradshaws as well, please give me more information on this plane crash hike I would love to go do that sometime soon before it gets too hot again.
I would love directions also if you would, I live in Phoenix but love to go to Sedona to do offroad but this is beautiful and closer.
@@This.is.dumb. I'll map it out for you and send it
@@jaredramos3067 or if would want to see the abandoned bunker
@@wyatt048 that would be awesome
I'm 54 years old I've been going there since I was 8. I know Indian ruins back towards lookout point just a little Northeast.
Hope your truck is ok from that rough road.
How Long take front crow king to prescott?? And how back is the road..is good for any normal 4x4 ??
