I took advanced calculus in high school and we had to use calculators. Forgot all of it though. I reasonably remember algebra from middle school and that's about it.

It's one of the many ways to combat 'maths-induced-sleepiness'. I remember back when I was in college, it was kinda expected that some people would be standing at the back everytime during Maths. I mean... yeah, you could simply just sleep if you feel like it. There's no rules against sleeping in class anyway... but do you really want to spend your precious time in school sleeping instead of learning something? I mean... education costs money. Might as well get your (or your parents') money's worth.

Calculus is not useful in real life? Calculus is useful in practically every technical field - physics, engineering, economics, computer science....
