- Robert Eggers Viking Epic THE NORTHMAN was just released in 4K by Universal in a Collector's Edition. This movie has come with massive hype (and praise) for being an authentic Viking experience, complete with great visuals, a compelling story, and an intense performance by Alexander Skarsgård.

In terms of "nit-picking" I'd say all of the Viking sagas are choc full of nits, so for me, the movie did an excellent job of staying true to the old myths. I liked how many of the fantastical / mystical elements are rationalised for the viewer as mushroom induced hallucinations (another historically accurate portrayal), but I too longed for more of the "weirdness" that Eggers can truly deliver, but was perhaps held back for commercial reasons. The Edda and other sagas would have allowed such license for outlandishness. However, I am truly grateful that Eggers educates as he entertains. The scholarship involved in every bit of production deserves all the hype it's getting.

The visual was great the trailer got me hooked. But when I got the chance to watch this movie we'll that 2 hours I won't get back.

I thought this movie was great. I think a lot of viewing experiences were hurt by marketing and high for this movie has a revenge action movie. I think it is a lot like last year’s the green night which played with it’s genre and asked questions more Questions and is definitely hey movie that is defined by personal preference of the viewer, but hard to do nine in the filmmaking was incredible.
A couple of scenes were near lifted straight from Conan the barbarian
Yeah I was hyped to see it too. It was ok and worth seeing but not as amazing as I was expecting.
Yeah, I was bummed. Now that the hype has worn off, maybe I could enjoy it on a rewatch.
Your experience definitely mirrors my own. I have the 4k release coming, so I am going to give it another watch and see how it sits with me, with a different set of expectations and mindset.

Even if The Northman is a 10/10 you should still do that.
I have a few thoughts. First, I think that the Northman improves after a few viewings. Second, studios always market movies in a deceitful way. This was not meant to be an action packed Viking movie. It's a revenge tale. Kind of like the count of Monte Cristo. He doesn't just want to kill his uncle he wants his uncle to see his life burn down around him before he dies. It's a great movie. The cinematography is first class. Also, Anya taylor joy is phenomenal. On a side note, If I could make one suggestion. I think you guys should both see the movie before releasing a video so that there's more of a back and forth discussion. I feel that's when your content is at its best. Just a thought but You can tell me to go to hell. 🍻
100% with you. I wish I had different expectations going in so I'm excited for a second view. I agree on your second point as well. Trying to keep this channel current, while watching everything new that comes out is difficult. This wasn't a movie for Russ anyway, but damned if I wasn't going to talk about it!

I thought it was great, and Eggers has basically flat out said that the plot is Hamlet and even jokes about it basically being The Lion King. He made the story very familiar on purpose because the focus is meant to be on the depiction of Viking culture and mythology. I think you just had the wrong expectations, having said this I didn’t like this one nearly as much as The Lighthouse. My least favorite part of the movie was Nicole Kidman’s plastic surgery lol, it just really didn’t look right in the world we were supposed to be in. Idk if you saw this in a theater or not but that definitely made me enjoy the movie more, the sound design was really excellent.
I agree my expectations were a little off. I wasn't expecting nearly as much of the mysticism and fantastical aspects, I was expecting a straight realistic depiction of Viking life, so some of these things that are based on legend kind of threw me off. Again, I'm assuming this is my own damn fault and maybe a rewatch will clear things up. I wish I saw this in the theater, but I can tell the sound design would have probably been incredible.
Hamlet is based on the folklore in the northman.
So technically, northman is the original.
Hamlet is the inspiration.
The trailer deserves an Oscar. The film is a slog and rather dull.
Yep, it looks like a borefest. Not the Braveheart we hoped for originally, based on the trailer.
