@@TigaWould for me personally the biggest benefit is eliminating rolling shutter, which impacts ALL video, but only stills taken with an electronic shutter. Obviously another solution for stills is to just use a mechanical shutter. Electronic does have some other benefits, like silence, really fast bursts and pre-capture facilities, so global is great for that but if you don't need any of that, then you could just use mechanical or EFC, which while not 100% perfect, are good enough for most. I have heard from others though who are most excited about eliminating banding on artificial lights, particularly at events - global could be great for them. And of course the fast flash sync folk who don't want to buy a camera with a leaf shutter. But my point it it's a very specific bunch.
@@TigaWould yes, most of the higher-end ones have modes which can detect and sync to lighting to reduce banding, but you can still get the effect, plus there's the refresh on LED signage. All improved or not an issue with global, but again my point is it is a limited group who'll really benefit from it.
Focal plane shutters can exhibit skewing as well once the shutter is no longer capturing the full image at once, instead using a "slit" to reproduce faster and faster shutter speeds. So, if you're really trying to freeze motion shooting faster than about 1/250th, the A9 III still provides an advantage. Keep up the good work!
You're right, but the skewing with mechanical is minimal vs a standard electronic shutter, at least in my tests. That said, I'll be clearer about this in the second part of my review. Glad you liked the video!
@@cameralabs Yeah this would primarily be applicable to people (like myself) who photograph things like cycling outdoors - you'll only see it at higher shutter speeds and if you're panning quickly. I used to use ND filters when photographing bike polo because of this. It's a little counter-intuitive that the faster the shutterspeed the more problematic it becomes. Cheers!
@@sambennett5203 thanks, it's useful to hear about specific examples. I used to photograph the Tour de France with a little Sony A6000 (!) and 70-200 but I was always aiming down hills as they climbed up, so very little side to side motion.
Gordon you may not read this, but I've been watching you since you started youtube. You inspired me to get into photography and I started with a Canon 450D/Rebel XSi after watching your video. You then got me to upgrade to a sony a7iii and I've never been happier to shoot with it. I just want to thank you for all you've done for me and for the photography community in general. Also I hella miss New Zealand and I hope to come back and visit sometime in the future. Cheers
I read every comment, so thanks for your kind one! I miss NZ too, it was great for landscape photography, but I also love Brighton in the Uk where I've lived for the last ten years. Thanks for watching my videos for so long!
@@cameralabs I second @LurkerPatrol5. I similarly started back in my freshman year in college 10 years ago with my 500D, I have just jumped ship to A7IV and your videos and reviews are core part of my photography memory! Thanks for doing what you do! :)
@@cameralabs I third that although right at the start when I discovered Camera Labs I did say to myself thats the person from the Personal Computer World magazine! (hopefully that's a compliment). Thanks for the work on this and as you alluded to with the announcement date it was interesting how the camera went in the Olympics for those who did pick it up.
This is by far the best A93 review Gordon. Thank you so much for your efforts!! The efforts behind this part 1 review is very evident through sample images, videos and its analysis. Loved it!!
This is also a valid point, if you're at the $6K price range then you already have an idea of what you need and what for, definitely not a beginner's camera. There's the case for people with more money than common sense, but my point still stands.
The problem with Sony is unless you buy second hand every Camera is now £6000 +. And if you buy second hand but want a Camera with more than 24 million pixels you have to buy the Sony A1 costing £6000. The + side is Sony sell a 200- 600 lens which is fantastic at an unbelievable price, i would leave Canon to use that lens, but if i want a Camera over 24 million pixels i have to buy the £6000 Sony A1. I could buy the Sony A7R4 but that only has a 10 frames a second frame rate.
Idk if personal relevance has any impact on the hype cycle. Normies with normie incomes amplify hype for things they don't need and can't afford alllll the time.
Very nice walk trough Gordon, the best I've seen on the A9III. Finally we have a camera that can shot rocket launches without everything turning to jello!
Great video with lots of information Gordon, and in a lot of ways far beyond what most people have shown in their videos. There is one point nobody has touched on, at least not from what I’ve seen. First, how long did it take for full frame mirrorless cameras to evolve, surpass DSLR cameras and finally replace them? I’d say it’s almost 10 years now, especially since two of the biggest players have gone that route as well, of course I’m talking about Canon and Nikon. And it took quite some time and iterations for mirrorless cameras to remove the flaws that plagued the first models, catch up to DSLR cameras and finally overtake them. So the first mirrorless cameras weren’t really all that good and had a lot of shortcomings, but they were the starting point. And that is exactly how I see the Sony A9III Will it be perfect? I highly doubt. Is it expensive? Absolutely. Are all the features interesting to everyone? Nope. To me it’s not really about this particular product, I see it again as a starting point. And I’m almost convinced most shortcomings like dynamic range, ISO and other things will be worked on in future releases, heck even the price will come down. And yes, it will definitely take some time, but we’ll get there eventually. And besides all of this, no more broken mechanical shutter…. Sony A7III 😉
That's true, but the skewing is minimal compared to basic electronic shutters in my tests for stills. That said, I'll be clearer about this in the second part of my review.
well done 19:00 shows HOW to use high sync flash. NOt those shown by SONY. against bright background is the correct way. a strongly backlit situation is WHY we need high sync.
Thank goodness for a preliminary common-sense (pre) review which tells us more about the A9iii we need to know fromm the point of view of actually using it than spending most of the time on ‘game changing’ or speculating when or if Canikon will put a global shutter in something or other next year. (For all I’ve no real reason for actually buying it!) Thanks, Gordon.
Look forward to a comparison with RED Komodo, a super 35 cinema camera that maxes out at only 6K40p. The application of this FF global shutter sensor in video production would be huge for years to come.
@@dtibor5903 totally agreed. Moreover, I found some tests on youtube of Lumix S1H with AA filter and S5 (or S5II) without it, and there's barely any difference in sharpness.
Definately buying this camera because of the flash sync that I dont need to use HSS anymore/120fps/Pre-Capture and 6K Video(Downsaple to 4K)at 60fps. Global Shutter is a welcome tech hope will see this in A1mk2. Thank you Sony for Pushing the Camera Tech Formard same like 10years ago when you introduce the World 1st Mirrorless Camera(Alpha 7)
Pack a lot of ND filters as the first base iso in video is 2000. This camera has a lot of features but there are also some downsides. Also a lot of the features require you to have native Sony glass of G or GM to work.
16:06 big mistake here, a mechanical shutter DOES NOT eliminate rolling shutter or banding. It also has a speed, around 1/300s, which is faster than current rolling shutter electronic shutters, but still not instant, which is why you will still get those 2 effects, reduced sure but still present. With a global shutter, those 2 effects are completely gone.
True, and I should have been clearer about that. My point was that when panning during a burst, I barely notice any skewing with a mechanical shutter, but I do a great deal with a basic electronic shutter. It's not zero with the mech, but it's extremely low, at least in my tests. I will try to cover this in part two.
You touched on a point that gets overlooked... this tech is not going to filter down anytime soon, as the much less costly stacked sensors have yet to show up in anything but top of the line flagships years after they first appeared. We may be onto a different technology before global shutters ever become a thing.
After watching your video, I am now even more likely to get the A9III than before, and add it to my A1, A7RV, A7SIII. I might sell the A7SIII and totally eliminate all rolling shutter effect with fast moving subjects. FYI, I am a pro of over 50 years in the business, who moved to Sony in 2017 after 40+ years using Nikon, Canon, Leica. I shoot all subjects around the world including fast sports, fast action and fast wildlife and this A9III would be a welcome addition , a real-world game changer for me. Cheers and best to you.
You sound like exactly the right customer for this camera - someone who not only understands what it does, but will actually exploit its benefits. I think you'll be very happy with it, although do bear in mind there will be an A1 successor at some point, and while it may not be global, it surely will be impressive given the first A1.
@@cameralabs signs are the next A1 will NOT be a global shutter for that higher megapixels, and likely not before third or fourth quarter 2024 or 2025. I want that global shutter as much for video shooting as for stills. I can always trade and sell current bodies to get new better performance ones. Cheers
Thanks for taking some extra time before making this video I think it's super important for those seriously considering the camera but also those who are looking at other Sony cameras and the possible technology available
14:36 - I would love to see if they can eventually bring this function internally rather than Post production. This is way better than digital noise reduction. (permitting the software is good) 16:52 - basically makes the A9iii advantage of high Shutter speed just nonsense for anyone shooting with super fast glass. I think its because of some weird artifacting with e-shutter super shallow DOF.
I didn't say not good. I said there's better options if you only want to shoot portrait and landscape under normal lighting. ONLY consider the A9 III for portrait if you're being challenged by tricky LEDs and banding.
The most important thing about the a9iii is that it is introducing the tech of the future and where cameras will be going over the next 5-10 years. Much like the r5 brought about the fast shooting, higher megapixel camera that can shoot 8k. Like Sony getting into the mirrorless world before anybody else. These types of cameras are most importantly meant to reset the camera tech and capability market in the years to come.
Well put and reviewed. Clearly a statement camera (and not "needed" by most). The question for Olympic Sports shooters will be, who can "afford" to be without it. The rumored Nikon Z9 "H" (high speed) may be real, or just rumor, but you can bet that Sony has thrown down the gauntlet and the others will respond. That's good for all of us - and those of us that will wait for the technology to filter down - because we WANT it, but do not NEED it.
The review I've been looking for. Thanks for the great video and job you've done. Now I'm sure I will be spending my money on the A7R-V ... Before this review I wasn't sure if I needed the A9-III but now I know A7R-V will check all my boxes. Thanks. Keep up the good work.
Excellent review. My only suggestion would be to have comparison videos. I'd like to see the rolling shutter and what the LEDs displays look like with something like a Z9 in the train video.
Regarding ND filters. The camera is a little more than a stop brighter than ISO 100. For most cameras this is moving from 1/8000 to 1/20000, leaving two more stops of 1/40000 and 1/80000. In other words, you have a 2-stop ND filter equivalent in the shutter. If Sony can get this down to ISO 100 in future models, you could leave your ND16 at home, and shoot your 85 1.4 in all daylight conditions, filter free.
Thanks for the excellent review. At 8:40 - I don’t understand why Sony doesn’t sacrifice a little bit of the body’s form factor and makes space for CFexpress Type B. One cm more height and 3mm more thickness and they could build in a quadruple card reader for SD and CFexpress B. The CFE type A are less then half the speed of type B and ridiculous expensive.
@@cameralabs Well, Type A will probably never be successful at ridiculous higher price for less speed. For the customers sake, Sony should think about the concept "Better an end with a scare than a scare without an end.".
Can you confirm if Super35 mode is available to use in Video in 4k60 or even 4k120? Also is active or dynamic stabilization available in all frame rates?
Fantastic video as always Gordon. I do wonder how long it will take for the global shutter to trickle down to the lower echelons of the Sony ecosystem if at all. The A9 iii is selling for $10500 in Australia. That is a lot of coin. I’m hoping we’ll see an “affordable” global shutter in M4/3 sooner than later.
Seeing as it took 4-5 years between the iii and the iv I'm not expecting the camera until 2025-26. But Sony is nothing if not inconsistent so we'll have to see
Unless they can do some amazing things with stacked sensor production, I suspect won't see it on an A7 for some time. Maybe the next A7s, but not the A7 or A7r.
@@joeaddison A7iii 2018 A7iv 2021. With all the new great cameras that have come out lately such as the S5ii I hope Sony gets their butt in gear and accelerate their next release with improved video and overheating issues. S5ii kills the iv in both regards.
Sony only quotes it as being 95.6% coverage, so there will be a thin border at the edges where it won't have PDAF. BUT I did deliberately try tracking a subject right up to all edges and didn't personally notice any degradation.
Thank you for your video, Gordon ! I wish viewfinder resolution were represented in easy to understand terms such as 4K, HD, full HD instead of dots per inch. It seems an impressive camera.
@@martinhommel9967 you're welcome! As a former PC journalist, I always used to describe EVF resolutions by their actual pixels or display standard, like XGA, Quad VGA etc, but it was getting too complicated!
These oled displays have often delta or diamond arrangement, so in theory they can deliver much sharper image than a conventional monitor of 2048x1500 pixel display. The apparent resolution should be closer to 4K, but probably the livefeed does not have that resolution
Actually some of the higher resolution models are very good in this regard as the pixels are so small, the noise becomes less visible. Have a look at results from, say, the Sony A7r V, Canon R5 etc. To be honest, there's not a huge amount to choose between them on noise - for me it's a way smaller difference than lens selection, ergonomics, shooting features etc
Tbh, I'm not excited at this camera cause I'm not their target audience for this. What I would like to see is to have this global shutter in a ZV-E1 style body (same size), with all the dials (3 of them on the left size), more rugged form factor but still maintain the same size, put in the best LCD possible with A7RV style screen, squeeze in solid state cooling fan from Frore Systems so it doesn't overheat, dual card slots. And for Sony to release 1.8 series of lenses that is matched, minimal focus breathing, same size and weight something like what Panasonic is doing and add in computational photography for "auto" mode for days that I just want a nice picture with one click. Now that would be a dream camera to own. Though it's technologically possible, it's not viable, but let's see what the future brings.
I agree, I'd like to see global in smaller cameras, but I suspect the potential hit on DR and sensitivity may become more of a problem on smaller formats.
@@cameralabs they can if they wanted to, use their Exmor T 2-layer transistor pixel and combine with the global shutter, but they probably still holding on to that technology to leave room for future upgrade. In other words, planned obsolescence in a way. And that is also where the computation photography/videography comes to play.
Thanks! Very balanced really hype-free diskussion of that camera! Just in the decision process for a photo-video camera with full frame sensor. 4k absolutely sufficient, planning to use 24p, photo is also important with 24 MPix as a fine compromise between resolution, low light capability and data pollution of my disks :) The global shutter for video - as you stated - is a big advantage but I learned that this camera isn't the photo beast. But the video of the train accelerating in the station without any artefacts is gorgeous. Maybe R6 ii first and if global shutter is really needed, rent a Sony and use my Canon lenses with that camera or wait for a lower priced APS-C global shutter system. I propose that we will see some camera soon @ maybe 3000 EUR with smaller sensor and maybe lower resolution ...
24p = judder on panning and motion. 24p was chosen >90 years ago as a compromise between foot per min film use (film was very expensive then) and an acceptable 'suspension of disbelief'. Ie a compromise. 60fps looks way better on motion, and there is not excuse for not shooting 60fps now. You can always drag frames in post if you like the 24fps blurry look. And, most creatives will be uploading to youtube. Most non tv display devices, phones, tablets, monitors are natively 60fps and your footage will look the best on these devices if captured and uploaded in 60fps.
I saw a video clip that seemed to indicate that advanced multi-point focusing, even with an wide aperture, is possible with this camera. I saw a grid with multiple AF points. Were you able to investigate anything on it's focusing capabilities?
At this price, just get a RED Komodo! Way better for video! Maybe save a little more and get the RED Komodo-X! Even better! But for photography, this is pretty badass!
I didn't get a chance to test bracketing on it yet, BUT if it does work at 120fps, then yes, it would be brilliant for focus stacking a subject that could move.
I would love to know and see how the Global Shutter affects Focus Bracketing and if it can function with Flash (the way Olympus OM-1 is the only one on the market that can). I can't imagine the opportunity for Focus Stacking at 120 FPS with flash, making handheld Focus Stacking a possibility.
I think they're exploring the possibilities of using 120fps for a multitude of composite handheld shots - right now there's the high-res mode, but I think others will follow. they will all need to be processed outside the camera though.
Excellent review. I'm curious. I'm sure your aware others are criticizing to syncing of flash. Sony flash on a Sony camera might be the reason. Maybe the other flash manufacturers can easily alter the timings of their flashes?...for the future. I'm not technical enough to know the answer to that.
I only use a Canon 600d( I'm an amateur) but Miquel Quiles video was sort of addressed by Tony Northrop & Matt Granger(his video on syncing) but your demonstration and Miguels seems to show it working perfectly.👍 (I just like to keep up with developing tech)@@cameralabs
SONY uses a sophisticated 2-way communication protocol between the flash and the camera that lets them fully control the flash in TTL mode. I have the A9III and SONY's HVL-F60RM2 flash. I shot some high speed action pictures at 120fps in Hi+ mode at 1/16000th, f/1.8 and ISO 250. In single frame mode, you can shoot at 1/80000th if you ever need it. Just use SONY flashes on SONY cameras and you are fine.
@@maconor007 they normally offer a PDF of the user manual, that's what i use when reviewing cameras. Have you checked the support pages at the sony website?
@@cameralabs Yes. The only PDF hey had was the 2 page Start Up Guide. I asked their AI Chat for a PDF and it referred me to their online Help Guide, which is not downloadable.
@@maconor007 I apologise, you're absolutely right, there does not appear to be a fully copy of the user manual as a downloadable PDF. They've done it for most cameras in the past, so this is frustrating.
Anybody try third party lens e.g. Leica M lens by Techart adapter. This combination cannot push shutter speed more than 1/8000 sec. How to push speed to 1/80000? Please advise.
Using faster shutter speeds to turn daylight into night… meh been doing that for years with the x100 series cameras using its leaf shutter - yawn Good distinction in its peer group.
@@TW-iu9zy there's definitely lots of extra things I could do, but it's a case of diminishing returns. I could spend an extra week or two weeks on it, but only earn 1 day or even less worth of revenue from a second video, so it's not worth it for a channel of my size compared to the big ones.
the best review so far, what a great camera, now it's time to include a built-in flash in future cameras, it doesn't sound "professional" but in practice it would be very useful, and Sony engineers could make some nice improvements to it....
I'm fond of built-in flashes, but I don't think we're likely to see them on anything other than entry-level cameras going forward. Shame, but that's my guess.
sadly I think that you are right, but at least they could make a really small flash to be mounted on the hot shoe and powered by the camera, something like a little cube of 1 inch on each side, there are several small lenses on the Sony lineup which wouldn’t cast a shade….and it could be useful for street photography or family events…
@@cameralabs That seems like a trend. Your Sony A7R4 video was supposedly two parts. You only did the photo part and not the video part as well. Your reason was no time or camera not available from memory.
@@dyong888 I'm a one-man operation who relies on loan stock to review. Sometimes I can get hold of the gear I want to test, sometimes I can't. Sometimes when i want to do a follow-up, it's not available, or I'm already working on other things. The problem with follow-ups on YT is often if I don't do it straightaway, they don't get many views. Likewise for when I do a photo and a video version, the photo one does well, the video one doesn't always. So there's no always sufficient demand for the second part either.
@@dyong888 yes, it's frustrating for me as well as you! That said I do try and pack as many tests and results into my first videos as possible - more than many do - so that if it ends up being my only one, it's still a useful report.

I share your frustration. Unfortunately none of us have any control over ads placed by TH-cam anymore - as of November, they put in as many mid-rolls as they like - it's out of our hands. Also it may surprise you that even on a channel of this size, TH-cam ads pay roughly UK minimum wage for the hours I'm putting in, so in order to make this a viable business to support my family, I need additional income, which in this case is occasional sponsorship. Unlike many channels which sponsor every single video, I try to only do one a month, or maybe two in the busier seasons. And I ALWAYS time-stamp them so that you can easily skip to the end - is that not working for you when you view this video?
You can't compare a Nikon Z8 or Z9 sensor with that of an A9 III. You are comparing 46MP sensors with a 26MP sensor. Once Sony brings Global Shutter at 46MP, then you can compare.
I disagree. The Z9 is at a similar price point to the A9 III and people would probably compare them. It probably wouldn't be fair to compare the FPS at RAW between the Z9 and the A9III because it is unrealistic to expect 120 FPS RAW with a 46mp sensor. However, I would say if you want the higher megapixel camera then go with the Z9, if you want the higher FPS then go with the A9 III.
You know it is coming however...this is just the first step. Nikon has fallen behind again...as has Canon. They are both great companies...but by the time they figure out global shutter...Sony will be coming out with the next generation. It's another race...and Sony has a big lead...once more. They are a sensor company after all...a big one with very very deep pockets.
@@JACKnJESUS Canon has Global Shutter in their High-end Cinema cameras since 2016. EOS C7000. Global shutter is nothing new. It is old technology. Don't forget, Sony manufactures the sensors for Nikon.

@@TigaWould for me personally the biggest benefit is eliminating rolling shutter, which impacts ALL video, but only stills taken with an electronic shutter. @@strippedlist not sure what you mean? I was able to use 1/80000 with autofocus and auto exposure. It just doesn't work yet with burst shooting.
on the A9iii presentation video there is an asterix stating: 1/80000 ONLY IN MANUAl MODE OR manual LENS, can't remember i check@@cameralabs
@@TigaWould yes, most of the higher-end ones have modes which can detect and sync to lighting to reduce banding, but you can still get the effect, plus there's the refresh on LED signage. All improved or not an issue with global, but again my point is it is a limited group who'll really benefit from it.
Love this detailed, balanced, and hype-free review! Looking forward to part 2.
Thanks!
The mechanical shutter "slit" travels at around 1/500th, so still visible if objects are particularly fast.
@@rbrtmllrthe slit travel time is about equal to the max flash sync speed. Usually 1/200, that is 5ms.

You can also think of a short review like Dustin Abott does. A brief review and one in depth review.
Interesting evolution of Sony's front hand grip. From the hard edge VHS cassette shape of the original A7 to a more DSLR-like rounded, contour shape.
It is interesting to look back at those first models.
One hype-reducer is that fact that, to most people, any brand of $US6,000 camera is irrelevant.
There are more than enough people to whom £6k is fine for a tool like this
Idk if personal relevance has any impact on the hype cycle. Normies with normie incomes amplify hype for things they don't need and can't afford alllll the time.
The global shutter will be a killer feature for weather / lightning photography and videography. I might try to rent one for a few weeks this summer.
Very nice walk trough Gordon, the best I've seen on the A9III. Finally we have a camera that can shot rocket launches without everything turning to jello!
Thanks!
The Canon A-1 had a "turbo boost" on their motor drive back in the day. What's old is new again. 😀
But was that before Knight Rider?
And that is exactly how I see the Sony A9III
Will it be perfect? I highly doubt.
Is it expensive? Absolutely.
Are all the features interesting to everyone? Nope.
To me it’s not really about this particular product, I see it again as a starting point. And I’m almost convinced most shortcomings like dynamic range, ISO and other things will be worked on in future releases, heck even the price will come down.
And yes, it will definitely take some time, but we’ll get there eventually.
And besides all of this, no more broken mechanical shutter…. Sony A7III 😉
Mechanical focal plane shutters were subject to skewing and banding since day one.
That's true, but the skewing is minimal compared to basic electronic shutters in my tests for stills. That said, I'll be clearer about this in the second part of my review.
well done
19:00 shows HOW to use high sync flash.
NOt those shown by SONY.
against bright background is the correct way. a strongly backlit situation is WHY we need high sync.
Thanks, happy to help!
Thanks, Gordon, for being such an equally reliable and pleasant source of camera news!
You're very welcome, thanks for watching!
You're welcome, I was getting really fed up with all the 'game-changing'
Thanks Gordon.
Look forward to a comparison with RED Komodo, a super 35 cinema camera that maxes out at only 6K40p. The application of this FF global shutter sensor in video production would be huge for years to come.
This one will be popular with video makers most likely, since there's anti-aliasing filter, a rather necessary feature for video.
Well I find absurd that removing AA filters was seen as a positive thing. Even with AA filters on my old Canon 6d I've encountered moire pretty often.
Panasonic was the inventor of the Mirrorless Camera (GH1) :-D
Great demo on the flash sync. Extremely impressive camera ❤
Thanks
You touched on a point that gets overlooked... this tech is not going to filter down anytime soon, as the much less costly stacked sensors have yet to show up in anything but top of the line flagships years after they first appeared. We may be onto a different technology before global shutters ever become a thing.
That's my belief, I hope I'm wrong, but I suspect it'll come to phone sensors sooner, but not to bigger sensors for a long time.
@@cameralabs signs are the next A1 will NOT be a global shutter for that higher megapixels, and likely not before third or fourth quarter 2024 or 2025. wow ... that's the best review I have ever seen ... thank you very much for this !!!
You're very welcome!
14:36 - I would love to see if they can eventually bring this function internally rather than Post production. This is way better than digital noise reduction. (permitting the software is good)
16:52 - basically makes the A9iii advantage of high Shutter speed just nonsense for anyone shooting with super fast glass. I think its because of some weird artifacting with e-shutter super shallow DOF.
Not good for Portrait you said 4:33 😮😮😮. Please tell me more I'm saving up to buy this camera 📷.
I didn't say not good. I said there's better options if you only want to shoot portrait and landscape under normal lighting. ONLY consider the A9 III for portrait if you're being challenged by tricky LEDs and banding.
Great preliminary review Gordon, plenty of information and many photo and video samples. Overall the still images and videos look quite good.
Thanks! Yes, for the target audience, the A9 III will be wonderful.
Great description of this camera, thank you, just ordered mine today
You're welcome!
Panasonic and Olympus got into mirrorless long before Sony
Well put and reviewed. Clearly a statement camera (and not "needed" by most). The question for Olympic Sports shooters will be, who can "afford" to be without it. The rumored Nikon Z9 "H" (high speed) may be real, or just rumor, but you can bet that Sony has thrown down the gauntlet and the others will respond. That's good for all of us - and those of us that will wait for the technology to filter down - because we WANT it, but do not NEED it.
Great review. Honest and transparent...very refreshing.

In your final review, I'd like you to evaluate how Sony's latest focus system compares to the best from Canon and Nikon.
Excellent review. My only suggestion would be to have comparison videos. I'd like to see the rolling shutter and what the LEDs displays look like with something like a Z9 in the train video.
That would be useful, but I don't have access to a Z9.
That lens can burn stuff if pointed towards the sun.
whats good in Global shutter,. it doesn't have shutter blade to repair in service center,.
Definitely. The fewer the moving parts, the greater the reliability.
I think the answer is Sony might have some investment in Type A cards, so wants to encourage them.
@@cameralabs Well, Type A will probably never be successful at ridiculous higher price for less speed. For the customers sake, Sony should think about the concept "Better an end with a scare than a scare without an end.".
@@rolandrickphotography I agree, but historically they've always liked to promote their own formats and accessories.
Can you confirm if Super35 mode is available to use in Video in 4k60 or even 4k120? Also is active or dynamic stabilization available in all frame rates?
Great questions, I'll try to find out

My only query is, are 24.6 megapixels enough for bird and wildlife photography? Thank you for this video.
Only you can answer that. It depends how much you want to crop. I suspect more distant wildlife photographers would prefer more.
after A9mkiii came out, Canon quickly renamed R1 as R3mkii
Does pre capture work with back button focusing as that would be useful.
Yes, I think it will arrive on smaller sensors, but may not become common on larger ones for a long time.
Gordon is the best! Thank you for your videos Gordon!
You're very welcome!
Waiting for the hype to die down is always a good idea. The possibilities of global shutter are exciting, though.
Great camera and definitely one of the best cameras on the market. I hope that shutter comes to the A7 V likely to be released next year.
No way they put that sensor in an entry level camera. You will only find it in the A9iii.
I hope it does not come to the a7R6!!
@@joeaddison A7iii 2018 A7iv 2021. With all the new great cameras that have come out lately such as the S5ii I hope Sony gets their butt in gear and accelerate their next release with improved video and overheating issues. S5ii kills the iv in both regards.
Hi, good job so far. my question is, what is the coverage of the phase detect autofocus area? show the area if it's not 100 percent. Thank you.
Sony only quotes it as being 95.6% coverage, so there will be a thin border at the edges where it won't have PDAF. BUT I did deliberately try tracking a subject right up to all edges and didn't personally notice any degradation.
Gordon, can you now set custom white balance in memory recall modes 1-3? . Is the speed of the AF-S mode improved?
I'm not sure, sorry! As for AFS, it felt fast, but it wasn't slow to start with on any of these. Most AFS delays now are with the lens.
Thank you for your video, Gordon ! I wish viewfinder resolution were represented in easy to understand terms such as 4K, HD, full HD instead of dots per inch. It seems an impressive camera.
I know what you mean. 9.44 million dots delivers a resolution of 2048x1536 pixels, so a little better than Full HD.
@@cameralabs Thank you Gordon.
@@dtibor5903 thank you for the information
Can it bracket at 120, or what would the real world expectation of high speed bracketing be?
Great question, i'm not sure, but will find out for my final review. I suspect that it can bracket at 120 fps.
Honestly I'm waiting for an APSC version of the A9iii. Or a cinema version with global shutter
Nice reflexes on your ball/paddle shot!
Thanks! Who needs precapture, right?!
Not very much has happend since Canon 40D with noise? What are the top 3 performing best with least amount of noise today?
Actually some of the higher resolution models are very good in this regard as the pixels are so small, the noise becomes less visible. Have a look at results from, say, the Sony A7r V, Canon R5 etc. To be honest, there's not a huge amount to choose between them on noise - for me it's a way smaller difference than lens selection, ergonomics, shooting features etc
It's interesting tech but what is the size of the market for a camera body that costs $6009 US?
4k absolutely sufficient, planning to use 24p, photo is also important with 24 MPix as a fine compromise between resolution, low light capability and data pollution of my disks :)
The global shutter for video - as you stated - is a big advantage but I learned that this camera isn't the photo beast.
Good choice, the R6 II is excellent. Also compare with A7 IV and S5 II
Great review Mr. Laing!

I want to know if is overheats during a 4h shooting in 4K60p or not.
That's a long recording in 4k 60, I suspect no camera could do that without active cooling.
I saw a video clip that seemed to indicate that advanced multi-point focusing, even with an wide aperture, is possible with this camera. I saw a grid with multiple AF points. Were you able to investigate anything on it's focusing capabilities?
I'm not sure I know what you mean. If you have a non-human or animal subject, it can place a bunch of AF squares over it, is that what you mean?
At this price, just get a RED Komodo! Way better for video! Maybe save a little more and get the RED Komodo-X! Even better! But for photography, this is pretty badass!

Excellent, as usual. Thanks for your work.
Don't know why I watch anyone else.! Thank you. (not that I could ever afford or ever need this one.😃)
I wonder if the fast shutter would make insect focus stacking easy? Not that I can spend my money that way.
Thanks for your honest reviews that one can trust.
You're welcome!
I dont know what others are saying, I do my own tests. The camera can adjust the sync pulse delay to better work with 3rd parties

You have a A9 III part 1 and that's it? No part 2?
I never got it back for further testing, so no part 2.
@@cameralabs thanks for explaining. its tough.
@@dyong888 yes, it's frustrating for me as well as you! That said I do try and pack as many tests and results into my first videos as possible - more than many do - so that if it ends up being my only one, it's still a useful report.
still dont get why they keep putting a useless micro USB instead of 2 USB c ports
Hi Gordon, enjoyed your video good summary. One little tip, your audio isn't the greatest, honestly I was on the edge of clicking off!
Yeah, I'm planning on changing my mic strategy soon...
Is it a GAMECHANGER???
Only if you're playing a very particular game!
I wonder whats sony's obsession with type A cards..
I think they maybe own some part of the IP or license
I cant stand in-video ads, on top of the youtube ads.
Either make it a chapter ao i can eaily skip it or I'm out.
The video is just not worth that many ads.
This camera is as niche as fujis medium format cameras
Yes, that's what I've been trying to say
In Germany 6.999€ 😮
Yes, incl 19% tax !
* 24 MP
@@fastflame200 It's brand new... in full frame...which has been the entire story here.
Fact is Canon and Nikon have fallen behind...more. Not sure they ever caught up.
It's a good thing that Sony came along...and Pan. Canon and Nikon had a glacial pace...they have never been so productive in their history...competition is good.
Great review
Sorry. Can’t finish watching, too many adds.
