Isn't it Todd Rundgren who did the string arrangements for this whole album? If I recall correctly that's what the linear notes say. I know Todd did a lot for this album either way. Dave Gregory i believe did mostly all of the lead guitar.

God what a brilliant album. Used to listen to this to death back in 87. I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that many of the songs on this record are the 80s equivalent of songs from " The Village Green Preservation Society" or Beatles songs such as "Penny Lane", "She's Leaving Home", and others. The same great melodic sensibility pervades this entire album. Fantastic.
Season Cylce was the only "Meh" track on this album. Rhyming Cycle with Umbilical was terrible. "Dear God" and "The Man who sailed around his soul" are absolutely briliant. Thease two songs and the way they play together are just too good.
@@danr.5017 Funny, I think Season Cycle is great, but Dear God is not very good and doesn't deserve to be on the album. Sacrificial Bonfire is a perfect closing song, only to be ruined by Dear God afterwards.
@@empiricalmiracle8592 I didn't say season cycle was bad at all, just that it sufers form some really bad rhymes. Ubill-ii cle. its pretty cringy. the idea is great and it's catchy but that line is just painful. Dear god as an athiest anthem is great.

It's not supposed to fade before transitioning like in this video, so for those listening, check out the album - the transition sounds much better and is in fact one of the best parts of the whole album.

'Til I floated downstream

Misery oh oh misery
And one million teacups
I bet couldn't hold all the wet
That fell out of my eyes
When you fell out with me
Now I'm crawling the wallpaper

To misery, oh oh misery
How can you smile and forecast
Weather's getting better
And you'll soon forget her
If you let the sunshine come through
How can you smile and forecast
Weather's getting better
If you never let a girl rain all over you
And just when I thought that my vista was golden in hue
One thousand umbrellas opened to spoil the view
One million salt seas
Recalled from school atlas
Alas, would be filled to the brim
Sunny Jim couldn't jump it
How can I be pleased
When I'm handed the keys
To a town they call Misery
Oh oh Misery
So with a mop and a bucket
I'll just say forget her
And carry on sweeping up
Where I've been weeping
The Jesters will creep in
To strike down the newly crowned Monarch
Of Misery, oh oh Misery
How can you smile and forecast
Weather's getting better
And you'll soon forget her
If you let the sunshine come through
How can you smile and forecast
Weather's getting better
If you never let a girl rain all over you

That's my favorite line too - but the whole song is beautiful, downright poetic
this song helped me a lot during though times, i always hink this as a "Elenor reagby" of the 80's, it's just an incredible song/songs
Steven Wilson brought me here. This album is indeed a masterpiece. Dear God, Dying, Supergirl... wow. Been listening to this over and over again.
Have you heard Nonsuch by XTC? There's a few songs on that album that actually sound like Steven Wilson is singing on them. Like War Dance for example

The Beatles: "You're Welcome!"
