  • Told myself I would get this review finished before the RE4 remake released... missed that deadline by a few hours but launch morning is still good enough right? Live A Live is a really cool game, I'll definitely keep thinking about this one as time goes on. Almost 30 years old but it holds up so well in the areas where it counts, especially with the Switch remake. I know it's not exactly relevant at the moment, but I wanted to talk about it anyway. Hope you guys enjoy this one! This is my longest review yet which I didn't expect, the editing process on this one was LONG but I'm really proud of what I have here. Thank you so much for watching!

Definitely played the Western section in English. The VA's just hit different in that one.

Also, fun fact, if you take out the letters O and D, of Oerstred's name you're left with erste the German word for first. The "first" Odio right in the middle, just as the game's namesake.

They gave Oersted/Odio such a perfect voice actor for the English dub. You can really sense the rage and despair in his voice.

The prehistory chapter gets a LOT easier if you get the hang of the "crafting system" you are supposed to use. Also, there is a fun minigame (more fun than the SNES original) that you can use to stock up on crafting materials. That being said, you will probably need a guide to get the best equipment.

I can understand getting frustrated at the combat in Prehistory if you don’t go in with a mindset that you aren’t meant to fight every battle; I’ve always looked at the chapter’s balance being indicative of what a caveman would actually go through. You could be hunting for some small creature, then get jumped by an apex predator. For a caveman, it would be a constant threat that they had to be careful to avoid.

live a live my beloved... One point of criticism is that I wished you would've grouped the stuff about soundtrack all together, you brought it up at the beginning then redirected to talk about megalomania, I think you should've mentioned it at the same time as you mentioned the title theme

  • @moonlight2870

I never realized how none of the protagonists are women. Not that it's exactly a problem, I just really never reallzed that up until now. How odd.

I did them in order of oldest time period to future, so started with Pogo and worked my way up to Cube, fun game though. I see you chose the same Earthenheart Sifu as me.

Calling the Near Future underwhelming hurt my soul

  • @maggintons

As much as I like the Radar, I wished they turned it off for the Distant Future chapter because it makes that story too easy, since all the puzzles are about working out how to navigate an increasingly hostile environment.

This is a really solid look at the game. Well done.

About Megalomania, Toby Fox confirmed he played the game before, and took the title as inspiration for megalovania.

I loved this game when I was able to play a fan-translation of its SNES version like a decade ago. I'm so excited for that now we're getting it released on other consoles this month!

Something I wish to point out about the encounters during the Caveman chapter that you didn't mention: the encounters aren't randomly triggered like in other classic JRPGs. They are invisible, roaming entities on the map you can track using the chapter's unique smell mechanic. (Their contents, however, can vary greatly in certain areas, so your criticism of unbalance is not wholly unwarranted)

Great video! My LiveALive video didn't get many views, so I'm glad to see other videos about it getting love.

Finally, a review that goes into the last part of the game!

  • @temporalwolf7054

Having played Prehistory first, I would absolutely recommend that chapter as the introduction. I will say your experience is very valid and I don't mean to belittle it. That said, my experience with the randomly tougher battles accomplished 2 things:

  • @bigslim7777

The biggest thing that makes it special? It was a Squaresoft B Team effort. And it was an SNES title, so imagine all this amazing story and such in an SNES cart looking no better than FF5 at the time.

  • @LancerkingNoel

The thing about prehistoric chapter battles if you did not get it. Is that enemies are invisble in map and it's collision with them that starts the fight. The chapter teaches that in the hunting part at start of game. If you just stay put it's just about luck if an ememy ends up crashing on you aas they move around

I remember watching a video about how this game was region locked years ago and never thought it would come back but wow what a shock
