    In this video we will talk about 3 rules of life that Marcus Aurelius thought were of the utmost importance to living a good life and how we can adapt them to work with our modern day lives. Aurelius was the emperor of Rome during the 2nd century A.D., and is said to be the last in a line of 5 good emperors known to have ruled Rome. Under his leadership, the empire was guided by virtue and wisdom. He was a student of Stoicism, a philosophy that emphasized fate, reason, and self-restraint. During his rule, the emperor constructed a series of autobiographical writings, now known as the Meditations.
    So here are the three rules of life from the wisdom of Marcus Aurelius -
    Rule 1. Always aim for pure judgment of events
    Rule 2. Only desire what’s inside your control
    Rule 3. Act for the common good
    I hope you enjoyed watching the video and hope that these 3 rules will help you in your life.
    Even though Marcus Aurelius wrote it 2,000 years ago - his insights on Stoicism still carry strong weight today. Stoicism is a school of Hellenistic philosophy founded by Zeno of Citium in Athens in the early 3rd century BC. Even though it is over 2000 years old, more and more people are discovering how Stoicism is not only relevant to modern times, but can be applied in very simple, yet strong ways.

      If we compare, which one has more priority, being a good man, or arguing about, what a good man should be.
      Definitely, being a good man, has more priority.
      But if we compare, which one has more priority, being a good man, or overcoming evil around us, some more if the evil, are plotted against us.
      Definitely, both are important.
      And the definition about, what a good man should be, is not meant for argument,
      but to build awareness, and to overcome the evil itself.

      Unfortunately, many skewed caricatures of it abound. I am of the opinion that our world now is mostly and broadly Epicurean. People expect Stoic virtues from others, but take away the Stoic philosophy that helps them achieve those virtues. And I personally have been hindered (not physically, but psychologically) to not get into Stoicism even though I knew it had something valuable to offer. I am glad to learn to be a free man removed from those ideological shackles.

      @@sisirkattempudi7155 The interesting part is Stoicism is all about freedom. Not being a slave to things that are not under your control or a slave to your emotions. It’s about the freedom to have courage to do the things you really want to without fear. It is not about suppressing emotion as many think it is, it’s about accepting your emotions for what they are and being able to see through them to the truth and react accordingly.

    I was recently condemned for a comment related to ones view of themselves as a failure or success. They said you focus to much on your success. That response had to come from an individual with such negative feelings about themselves. I responded that I will only focus on my failures from this point on. However it's my choice on how I view my self, not others decision. I've decided to ignore negativity and choose success. I just wish more people valued themselves, they wouldn't be so jealous and resentful of others. Once you follow the path of failure you can be easily manipulated by others for their own purposes.

      I believe so. I think the hardest rule to follow is the second one about desiring what's only in our control. We want to be in control of everything as a means to avoid disappointment. We aim for total control as an excuse to not have to worry about rule # 1 always aim for pure judgement if judgement will always seem favorable in our eyes the very least.

    • @100perdido
      @100perdido 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not really. What "it is what it is" means is that you are screwed and there is nothing you can do about it. It's sort of a step removed from being a Stoic.

    • @capohd28
      @capohd28 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@raunc9278 This rule does not mean we don’t goals. We can still have long term goals, but we can’t fixate or be attached to that outcome. All we can do is concentrate on the small daily steps that it takes to get there. Focusing too much on a future goal, takes us out of the present, and disappoints us if it takes too long or we do not get there, which in many cases is out of our control. Focus on the present, the journey you have to get there.

      He presided over an empire whose economic and military survival, depended upon slavery. It's just that, as the emperor, separated from what was really going on in his empire, he had the time and leisure to ponder philosophy and write his meditations. In this way, He may have had a good idea for philosophy, but he did not act for the common good in his rule.

      The empire relying on slavery has no baring on Marcus Aurelius' character. Abraham Lincoln ended slavery by literally massacring millions of his own citizens and he was assassinated for it. Was this "for the common good"? Because it would have been on a much more massive scale for Rome, who depended on it to a much higher level than America ever did.

    now i ponder on 3, what can AMERICA do for common good? MAKE SOMETHING YOUR NEIGHBORS CAN USE:
    grow healthy food build parts for manufactures become self reliant not reliant on banks and government to supprt your walmart addictions😞

    What is pure judgement? is it making judgements without including your own assumption and beliefs?

    • @capohd28
      @capohd28 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, as best as we can do. All reality is subjective, however the goal is to be as objective as possible when making decisions on how to act. Don’t react on instinct. Use logic and reason instead of emotion.

  • @loljoker127

    Great video but rule number 1 seems to paint out that emotions aren’t helpful in getting through a situation. I’m not defending the polar opposite but emotions are extremely important for getting through something. The only problem is when we carry them forward. We can’t control our emotions (rule 2) and therefore we shouldn’t police them but instead listen to them. From there we can speed up the process and it makes your subconscious feel actually listened too!

    • @thatguybob6088
      @thatguybob6088 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would challenge that idea actually. I don't see how emotions are valuable, at the end of the day people get the most done when level-headed, and passion, while it makes you feel really good, also makes you crash and feel terrible

    • @loljoker127
      @loljoker127 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thatguybob6088 as idealistic as that is, it’s not very down to earth, I hope you can find a middle ground in your life and learn to accept that sometimes you can’t control being emotional. Repressed emotions is a dangerous game, tread lightly 🙏

    • @capohd28
      @capohd28 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Stoics don’t suppress emotions. They accept them as they are, but look past them for the proper way to respond. To repress emotions is to cause yourself stress. To look at your emotions and accept them is to say to yourself, I am upset right now, but this will pass and I should think out the proper way to respond, and not let my emotion control me. One thing Stoicism says that if someone says someone that upsets you, pause and don’t respond immediately, and to think about how you respond or not, so that you don’t say something you can’t take back.

    Thanks for posting this. Now I can burn all those motivational books and tell myself that my goals were beyond my control and give up. That's much easier anyway. Or am I missing something here?

    • @capohd28
      @capohd28 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Stoicism doesn’t say to give up. It’s about not being attached to the outcome as things don’t always go your way. Stoicism is about being brave, being in the present and boldly going forward. Many modern motivational books are about positivity and about thinking you can do anything, but don’t deal with what happens if you fail. Stoicism says to go ahead boldy, but accept the fact you can fail, but you will learn valuable lessons along the way that will make you more likely to succeed. It also allows you to change direction if warranted.

    A bit of humour on Rule 2: in Machiavelli's "Mandgarola" a couple wanted children. Doctor asked what they did to achieve this. Couple: "we pray four times a day".
