This commercial got my Grandfather, a lifelong Republican, to vote Democrat for one time in over 60 years of voting. If a fear is big enough, and a gaffe is bad enough, you can get some stalwarts to cross over.
It was coercion a year after the Kennedy assassination for the same hive mind to maintain full control over bureaucratic entities, not that Goldwater was genuine opposition to establishment insiders.
That commercial(became known as the Daisy, Daisy Girl or Peace, Little Girl ad) was shown once and there was so much of a controversy, that it was pulled from broadcast circulation, but different media, like the nightly news, talk shows, and news broadcasting agencies, kept it in the public eye by so-called discussing and analyzing it, a loophole on keeping this commercial in the public eye.
@@WilliamStoneContentZone Technically true, it was only aired as a paid ad once, on the "NBC Monday Night Movie" TV program. But that one airing created such a stir that being pulled after the one showing created a sort of a "Banned in Boston" effect, with people who'd missed the original airing wanting to see it, and the network news shows obliged, showing it during newscasts as part of coverage on the controversy. So a lot more people ended up seeing it than the initial audience on the "Monday Night Movie."
I'm searching for that one 60's anti war commercial that showed two suited politicians facing off on an open field to do battle as proxies to real armies fighting one another. Anybody remember this commercial?
"Goldwater’s possible use of nuclear weapons in Vietnam if he were to become president. What if Goldwater were elected? Could this lead to an all-out nuclear confrontation with the Soviet Union? No one could be sure of the answer." like there is no true evidence or logical argument made here... and yet
@Adam Brady It's a meme that philosophy majors are perennially broke and unnecessary, but philosophy is genuinely an essential study in politics, ethics, psychology, and more too long to name. It should be a mandatory, core part of high-school education. So many, Americans are bereft of critical-thinking skills and compassion.
@Trey Atkins It plays on irrational fears, and that only assures votes for somebody who can't win on his merits. Johnson was far worse than Goldwater as a warmongerer; Johnson actually used (now documented) lies to bring us into Vietnam. Is that the type of result you are hoping for? I was prime fodder for the cannons of Vietnam, and in the lottery my birthdate came up #1 in the first year. It was the next day I found out the following year applied to me; I was actually #225. If you are willing to put people in positions like that because you are easily misled by your irrational fears, please do not vote. You are unfit for the challenge.
Goddamn! They were really worried about Barry Goldwater. We've been so lucky that nuclear weapons haven't been used on civilians since the mid-40's. Of all the misfortune 2020 has brought, at least this isn't part of it.
Johnny Pastrana is right - Johnson was the warmonger, probably the worst in the US since Teddy Roosevelt. On August 2, 1964, while Johnson was finishing out his temporary presidency as JFK's VP, he inflated the Maddox incident into the Gulf of Tonkin Incident as casus belli, bringing us full force into a Vietnam war. The Pentagon Papers and Defense Secretary Robert McNamara's testimony in 2003 confirmed Johnson wanted a war and was determined to go to any length to get it. Beware the lies you accept; they may come with an exceptionally high price. If you don't know both sides lie, we are wasting our breath on you.
Johnson was much, much worse than Goldwater, sending millions to Vietnam in a war which it is now documented he started by lies to Congress. I remember this ad - I had just turned 12 - and still remembered the daily air raid drills of the Cuban Missile Crisis two years earlier.
My head randomly: Remember that time Lyndon Johnson basically said "vote for me, or you will die"?
This child clearly was not taught how to duck and cover.
That have me a chuckle!

Trump: "We do a little trolling."
LBJ: Nuclear holocaust, or vote for me.
Not gonna lie, that's metal af.
I can hear “Symphony of Destruction” queuing up.
Im surprised no 90s heavy metal bands starting a music video with this ad
Definitely saved her math teacher some troubles
I was only eight years old when I saw this ad. Saw it when it was originally aired in September 64. It sure made an impression on me.
Have any ads since been as memorable?

This commercial is pretty raw
It was only aired once

@@thebestcommenter22 haha so quirky
My dream is to someday top this ad.
LBJ sure did know how to campaign
The 60's had no chill
I have heard that this political ad was only shown once, and never shown again during the campaign.
I believe that is correct.
I wonder if the band Interpol is referencing this ad in their ' rest my chemistry' song.
Sounds like LBJ doing the countdown.
bubbiesdad it is
The greatest AD in history!

so did nixon
How's everyone's day going..?
These are the stakes in 1964 & 2020.
This reminds me of the 1984 Apple ad, except more close to home.
They don't make them like they used to
welp, so they didn't want their children reduced to thermonuclear ashes... strange
If you reach here while reading '21 lessons for 21st century' 👍👍
learning about this in my philosophy class/book (an informal fallacy of relevance = the appeal to fear of the people)

Jesus that's grim!

That's it you're grounded grounded for 8-year go to your room now or I'm calling the police
The ad works because there were some truths in it that were rightfully harbored fears about Goldwater.
We watched this today in civics
Biden needs to run an ad like this later in the year

Sam Waterston, the actor on Law and Order, was a democrat until this ad aired. He left, but would later rejoin the modern democrat party.
This could be a meme
The steaks are too hot to eat right away.
Its very Vague like an Obama Advert. I guess that is the key to political adverts? make them as vague as possible?
This is not vague at all. It's basically "Vote for me if you want to live, the other guy will get us into nuclear war."
There's nothing vague about this ad, It's bluntness is the entire reason it was effective.
Lmao lbj is a hypocrite he did that to Vietnamese kids
Democrats need to dust this add off again and use it agains Goldwater Jr Trump
LBJ turned out to be the warmonger knucklehead. Don't take any colon cleanse on election night, you won't need it...Trumpslide 2020...

The irony is that Johnson ended up being an awful President.

Brilliant propaganda.
The commercial was a bit early. It might actually happen if Joe Biden is elected in 2020
@Paul Kryder lol good stuff
No. It won’t. It’s less likely to happen under Biden than Trump
