@@jamesparker1127 I feel like the reason why Disney would green light this is because Jeffery Kazenberg mostly cared about earning awards. Which also led to the Prince of Egypt.
An addendum about Esmeralda: though it is true that in the book she was kidnapped by the Romani (and 16 for that matter), Disney is not the first to make the change. A 1956 film adaptation of the story also has her as a genuine Romani woman and most productions have aged her up .
Despite the tone problems, this is my favorite Disney animated movie because it really pushed the limits of what story could be told in the animation medium. Considering 2-D animation's not favored by big studios in the west anymore and Disney's identity has grown to be a mainstream audience pleasing content machine, we're never going to get another one like it at least from WDAS.
Maybe Esmerelda’s red dress, being a color the Romani consider bad luck, might’ve been a sign that something bad would happen to her. It’s kinda a sign of danger when something is red. (Then again, they probably wouldn’t want her to dress in that color in the first place if it’s a bad omen…)
While it never made it to Broadway, there is a Hunchback of Notre Dame musical that is very good. It includes the original Disney music but has additional songs to fill it out. There was even a Seattle production of the musical that included both deaf and hearing actors.
It is truly one of if not the greatest musical ever made. Disney had no faith in the show, so there wasn’t much budget. However, they use it to their advantage and made the show more interpretative, forcing the audience to use their imagination and think about the show, making the message as immortal as Notre Dame de Paris. Also, they had both “God Help The Outcasts” and “Someday”, with “Someday” being the song that Esmeralda sang after talking to the archdeacon in the movie before they replaced it with “God Help The Outcasts”.
03:52 Even better - the latin sung in Frollo song is Confiteor, where Christians confess to God and saints that they have sinned and ask humbly for forgiveness. All while Frollo denies any of his doing is his fault and tried to blame Esmeralda instead.
Stephen Schwartz would go on to write the songs for DreamWorks animated masterpiece "The Prince Of Egypt". Esmeralda remain as one of my most favorite Disney character in history.
I remember this movie mad me cry as a kid with how upset and sad it made me. 20 years later, and not only is it now my favorite Disney movie to date, it was the movie that set the tone for the kinds of media I typically enjoy to this day.

Technically, there is a Broadway adaptation. It was actually made by Disney, has all of the songs from the Disney film, however, it does include many aspects of the book as well because they bring back Frodo’s brother and they have an ending closer to the end of the book
Part of why Phoebus gets a redemption arc is because they took Phoebus from the book (an absolute scumbag) and another book character, Pierre Gringoire, (a well-meaning but dorky Victor Hugo self-insert) and made them one character for the Disney adaptation.
Wow, kudos to Demi Moore for insisting they get a singer. There is absolutely no shame in admitting that you can't perform a song up to standard, especially if you did try your best. Some actors would probably be too proud to do that.
although this was like 2 or 3 years before the piolet was even recorded. But in the same breath that episode of Spongebob with the bad breath hits way different now.

Frollo and Lady Tremaine are suprisingly real representations of how abusive parents manipulate their children even tough they are animated characters
Don’t forget Mother Gothel as well.
And there's Scar: the manipulative uncle
Also Mother Gothel in Tangled
Mother Gothel too (Tangled)

Mother Gothel was also a mother but never to Rapunzel since she kidnapped her for the golden hair with the flower
