I'm Canadian learning Cantonese (I watch channels like this for practice) and every time i meet a HKer they are really surprised and they end up helping me with Canto and I help them with English! :)
To improve any language skill: Practice, practice, practice. There is no substitute. Try to immerse in the Canadian culture by watching local tv programs and make Canadian friends with whom you can comfortably communicate in English.
In Montreal, you may be able to get by with English except when it comes to obtaining government services. We are referred to as "allophones" who are neither English nor French. French is not a very difficult language to learn because of its many similarities to English. To perfect it is a different story.

我当初学英文给自己定下的要求就是坚决不住richmond😄，结果果然英文进步的很快。

如果純粹為咗日常生活溝通R水吹水平真係放膽講就得，完全唔使擔心別人笑你英文差。從來都係中國人笑中國人又或者你自己笑自己，如果唔係係西方世界，除非歧視你，如果唔係根本冇西人在乎你嘅英文水平，只要大家溝通到就得。喺香港生活，啲人就會話你英文差就咪講，扮曬蟹，搞到自己害怕講英文。所以香港呢啲咁嘅生活文化真係搞到好大壓力。
係啊，反而咩都唔講人地先歧視你，覺得個人古怪。只要肯講其實佢地都樂意聽
