What's great about this particular version of this track is that he was sick on/around that day. Normally he easily nails the clean parts after the high pitched rough vocals, but here, the illness it ads this little bit of edge to his clean vocals near the end of the track, giving those parts just that little bit extra rawness and heartfelt energy. You hear him pushing himself beyond his limits, instead of just winging it. Love it.

This song is what got me into Townsend. He's such an amazing singer, guitarist, & composer. We saw him last year in March of 2020 right before lockdown here in Houston, TX. Amazing show! Still can't believe we haven't been to a live concert since. Devin Townsend did another wonderful rendition of this song "Deadhead" at another live performance called "Plovdiv." Albert Hall & Plovdiv were both released on blu-ray, so this is probably what you were sensing when you mentioned that the sound may have gone through post-production between the performance and the release. I would recommend covering one of the songs from the Plovdiv show, which is broken into two halves -- the first set features a full orchestra and choir behind the band, to play a number of fan favs, while the second set is just the band, playing the entire Ocean Machine album. My recommendation would be "Stormbending," from the first set, with orchestra and choir. There is a video on youtube from the blu-ray, which runs about 4:45, but it cuts the outro short. There is another one that's audio-only, which covers the full 5:20 of the song (that youtube audio-only video is a 6:05 track, probably pulled from the Plovdiv CD). Edit: Well! I see you already covered the official music video for "Stormbending," so I guess you wouldn't want to cover the Plovdiv live version. Nevertheless, I think you might personally appreciate viewing it, and comparing the album version to the live version with orchestra + choir. Anyway, good job, I'll keep an eye out for more content.
The first time I heard Devin sing was in the Vai project with Steve Vai and I was amazed at his ability to sing with incredible beauty one minute then a massive controlled anger the next, I think he is a unique voice among men, he can lull you to sleep the wake you in a nightmare
This was at the back end of the show as well, he'd just performed all of the Dark Matter album from Z2, even with a break between sets he starts it all back up again at full lunacy with Namaste before going into Christine and THEN Deadhead. He finishes the show (2 hours 45 minutes long) with a vocal perfomance that is even more intense, before giving a joyous encore. The man's a beast, and the RAH show is something very special indeed.
Great to see your reaction to this! Would be great to see your reaction Devin's "Singularity". It's a plus 20 min epic, with some truly amazing composing
@@TheMissKittyStar I would suggest he react to both, but the metal version first, so he can see the intense side of it initially, then be able to appreciate the softer tone of the acoustic version.
I would love to see what you have to say to "The Death Of Music" (live at Plovdiv or at The Royal Albert Hall). I think one of the most breathtaking performances of him.
Devin has often stated that he has a special love for suspended notes - I think from classical music during choir practice in school unless I misremember - and you can hear them all over his music. Regarding the "stretching the song", this song and most others that he played during this period with this band were played with backing tracks, so they all have click tracks and countdowns in their in-ears and there's no room for improvisation as far as structure goes. (At one concert I went to the engineer accidentally sent the guide track to the PA for a short while. "Did you actually hear that?" Devin asked. Fun stuff.) And I love your description of how the 9:th pulls your soul open.
Would love to see your reaction to La Dispute! I absolutely love them and the variety they have in their songs/albums. Also, for more Devin Townsend, a really interesting song is Deconstruction. "Decomposer deconstructs Deconstruction"
Yeees! I'm so glad you did another Devi song, and this is my favorite song! I still get goosebumps (chicken skin) from it. And this live performance is a great choice for it. Shame about the video, but it is what it is. Keep it up man!
Strapping young Lad - Almost Again Please react to this you will love it. some amazing guitar work, and unbelievable vocal performance from Devin Townsend and some of the best metal drumming there is and my favourite groove of all time!
I’m curious to see how you would react to Coheed and Cambria. They’re a concept band that base their albums (except one of them) on a graphic novel written by their lead singer. So all their songs follow some sort of story and each really has their own kind of genre, some songs are kinda more “poppy” than others.
Devin LOVES to add that 9th! You mention the synths - a lot of the wall of sound is in backing tracks. Devin has so many layers that there's no way of producing the sound live without having a huge amount of people on stage. I'm actually not sure which part of the swathe of synths is being played live, but I should imagine it'll be a dirty sweeping pad, like a Nord or Korg Triton. It's so hard to tell though. The mix - I was there and it sounded absolutely phenomenal! Dev did rework the mix for the DVD/BluRay, but only to optimise it for the format. He didn't add or overdub anything.
If you watch the video of the concert. When Devon hit the scream at the end the guitar player looked at him like Holly shit dude. The camera catches it quick then moves quickly. Lol it awesome because on the studio version he doesn't do this last scream. That why I like this version of the song.
I've heard a vocalist's thoughts, but I'm curious for a composer's take on Heilung. Both Krigsgaldr and In Maidjan live at Castlefest 2017 are incredible!
My favorite thing about this performance is in the middle when he makes fun of the crowd for having no sense of rhythm. My man, keeping it real. He knows he's making a concert video, and he has the balls to mock his fans. My hero.

The first time I heard Devin sing was in the Vai project with Steve Vai and I was amazed at his ability to sing with incredible beauty one minute then a massive controlled anger the next, I think he is a unique voice among men, he can lull you to sleep the wake you in a nightmare
Love watching your facial expressions listening and understanding greatness
So beautiful composition...
Devin hits ya deep. From any angle he wants to. Any emotion he can perfectly emulate it musically
This entire concert is out of this world. You've got to listen to Funeral, Bastard and The Death of Music.
He was sick that night by the way
That's what I read too!
And had just played the whole first part of that show that lasted an hour or so?
@@fubar1217 Yes, this was part of the second half of the concert, the "by request" set.
Not sure if you saw the comment I made on one of your other videos about this song, but thank you for making this.
You need to follow up Rivers of Nihil. Subtle Change is a masterpiece of mythic proportions
Great to see your reaction to this! Would be great to see your reaction Devin's "Singularity". It's a plus 20 min epic, with some truly amazing composing
Just throwing a request out there: Mein Herz Brennt by Rammstein. Love the strings in this song!
The acoustic version or the full metal version?
Yeees Rammstein would fit perfectly to this channel!!
Yes! Great suggestion
@@TheMissKittyStar I would suggest he react to both, but the metal version first, so he can see the intense side of it initially, then be able to appreciate the softer tone of the acoustic version.
Thanks for doing more devy!

Geebz you're doing great! Loving your content!!!
I appreciate that Sean!
Phil Spector Wall of Sound in full display with Devin, his voice is a force
please do more Devy, you have to love this guy!
One does not simply spin the wheel and end up on deadhead. This is your destiny my friend 🙏
Devin is Cool & Power, as always. Thank you for the great choices (taste) of Great Metal bands.
You were riding the wave... it’s near impossible not to! Beautiful song!!
I've seen a million reactions to Kingdom, but THIS is where it's at. Good choice 👌
Would love to see your reaction to La Dispute! I absolutely love them and the variety they have in their songs/albums.
Also, for more Devin Townsend, a really interesting song is Deconstruction. "Decomposer deconstructs Deconstruction"
14:24 my face when the feel train hits.. relatable!
Your smile on the initial key change made me smile.
Yeees! I'm so glad you did another Devi song, and this is my favorite song! I still get goosebumps (chicken skin) from it. And this live performance is a great choice for it. Shame about the video, but it is what it is. Keep it up man!
Love the shirt. saw a triple feature in the early 80s at a local theater.
Strapping young Lad - Almost Again Please react to this you will love it. some amazing guitar work, and unbelievable vocal performance from Devin Townsend and some of the best metal drumming there is and my favourite groove of all time!
Please listen to Why?, Sprite and Genesis off Empath. I think you'll love the whole album.
I’m curious to see how you would react to Coheed and Cambria. They’re a concept band that base their albums (except one of them) on a graphic novel written by their lead singer. So all their songs follow some sort of story and each really has their own kind of genre, some songs are kinda more “poppy” than others.
THANK YOU
Devin uses shimmer and chrystal echo. So that might be the synth your hearing. He also has a signature pedal with moer doing reverby goodness
If your gonna spin a wheel and stop on a song you just won the jackpot
The first time I heard Devin Townsend Project I couldn't believe it was the same guy from Strapping Young Lad. The album Empath is so good.
Try Devin Townsend Project - Stormbending live at Plovdiv. Its an amazing performance with full orchestra and choir accompaniment.
I guess it's time I go down the Devin Townsend rabbit hole. Thanks for the rundown Geebz!
My request: Wilderun - The Unimaginable Zero Summer
If you watch the video of the concert. When Devon hit the scream at the end the guitar player looked at him like Holly shit dude. The camera catches it quick then moves quickly. Lol it awesome because on the studio version he doesn't do this last scream. That why I like this version of the song.
I've heard a vocalist's thoughts, but I'm curious for a composer's take on Heilung. Both Krigsgaldr and In Maidjan live at Castlefest 2017 are incredible!
I have that on CD! Took 2 months to get here from overseas.
Yes!! Love Heilung!
Wintersun - "Sons of Winter and Stars" is going to blow your mind. Just saying. People usually go for the rehearsal live version.
That would be amazing!
Overrated af.
Steven Wilson - Ancestral
Yeah, guthrie govan solos cant beat them... literally
Devin Townsend Pixelate. The feel in this track needs to be played - especially with Anneke playing live with him.
