Done With Honey - 2022

2022 Honey Harvest is wrapped up. Despite drought conditions it was still a good honey crop. This last pull was some of the best fall honey that I've ever had.
I'm very thankful for the honey crop, the bees, and my subscribers that have followed along with me so far this year.
Now it's time to get these bees ready for winter.

Hey gus appreciate your knowledge and your videos I'm going into my hives today to do my final pull my honey is very dark not exactly sure what's in the area where I am this is my fourth season and I'm anxious to move forward and expand my apiary.
I'm currently running 34 colonies.

I extracted fall honey a few years ago. It was almost pure golden rod and some aster. It crystalized two weeks after I bottled it. What went wrong? I've let the bees keep it ever since. Thanks for the videos Gus.

Congrats on the good season! Question for you going into fall. Do you go through the individual boxes this time of the year to check on the bees and ensure they have plenty stores, or do you just lift on the back of the hives to ensure they're heavy enough to avoid possibly injuring the queen from inspections?

I’ll look at the population and stores when I treat for mites. From there I will combine ones I think won’t make it.

Hey Gus, after extracting, and frames with little honey, do you set the boxes out in the open for the bees to dry them? How far away from the bee hives?

I set them outside at my shop, probably 50 yards from what hives I have there

Off topic but what’s your single brood chamber hive winter setup? Upper entrance, insulated top? Reduced entrance? Any thoughts appreciated

Upper entrance, no insulation, I should reduce entrances but typically don’t.
Anything to prevent rodent damage is good, I’ve just gotten in the habit of not putting sticks in.

Yes it will, especially if I leave the supers for a few days.
I just wanted to be done this last time so extracted the same day I pulled.
