    What a joke . We pay all that money for a bike with supposedly world class navigation and a big beautiful screen but end up having to put our smart phone on the handlebars to navigate !!! Plus we have to pay a subscription ? Horseshit . Thanks for the info .

    Wow, I didn't know this. From my experience with the navigation, it has been flawless. I don't have any issues with the bike connecting to my hotspot. After the first time I connected, all I have to do is turn the hotspot back on and it automatically re-connects. I actually enjoy the navigation (and I'm surprised that I am). I ended up getting one of those boxes for Android Auto, so I don't forsee me doing the subscription. Great info brother.

      I think the Magic box really helps with connectivity and you mention turning on your hotspot. If you regularly turn it off and on I think that also helps. This is a new trend. Car dealers have been doing this for a while. A buddies ‘24 RAV 4 has a subscription for things like keyless entry with his phone. On the other hand with the Boom box there was a cost for map updates.. if the Harley subscription covers this, then it’s not as bad.

    Nav not working on the big screen is enough of a turnoff for me not to purchase a new Harley. $35000 plus motorbike and the company wants you to pay for a subscription. I'll have to think long and hard about that. I currently have a garmin mounted to a ram mount and that works great. One of the reasons i was considering buying a new Harley was for the nav but if im going to pay extra for that feature i'll probably decline and just keep what i have. The up side is i won't be spending any money !!

    Are you saying the subscription is needed to get navigation? Why does it need a cloud service to operate? Is it just for it to work with the HD App?

    • @ITFZone

      Hello, for the '24 RG and SG you now have to enable navigation for $350, this includes 3 years of cloud services which gives you map updates, traffic and weather. For CVO owners the navigation is included with the 3 years of cloud service. The cost to renew after 3 years has not yet been determined. Now as far as I know you do not need the cloud service subscription to use the Ride Planner app, of which I am a fan.

    Does the navigation feature use a satellite or the phone? The information I can get from Harley is limited and my dealer is clueless. Do you know? I’m thinking of getting the imbedded navigation for my 2024 street glide but I can’t get this question answered and of course the places we sometimes ride do not always have cell service. Thanks for all the information you provide. Excellent!

    • @ITFZone

      Hello! The embedded nav is GPS based. The bike has a GPS antenna. Map updates, weather and Traffic are provided by using your own phone as a hot spot which thus far is very problematic. But for just navigation it is a built in map and built in GPS antenna so no phone or internet required to navigate. BUT see my video as to how well it works: th-cam.com/video/moe6qat6-jI/w-d-xo.html

    • @ITFZone

      Never a dumb question! With the embedded navigation and WIFI connected to your phones hotspot you will see clouds overlaid on your current location or as you zoom around. There are many phone apps that will do this, one that I have personally used is weather on the way. You put your destination in and it will give you a forecast of your ride and update along the way. Congrats on your new bike!

      For the weather, traffic and map updates there is to be a subscription fee. However the system will remain active as is for the life of the bike. The initial activation fee does include 3 years of the subscription services.

  • @paineys3341

    I get why you would have to pay cloud services ie weather and traffic and map updates, however as the bike has navigation built in and navigation uses GPS satellites and NOT cell network services so there should be no cost...like on the Boom GTS which I love. This could be a deal breaker for me !
    Also after 3 years and you DON"T re-subscribe does the nav stop working or do you only lose the cloud services?
    Another point is, if you ride a lot then this subscription is going to use ALL your cell monthly data allowance!
    I am an android user so CarPlay is not an option plus I love using the Harley Ride Planner and the HD app

    • @ITFZone

      Hello! The subscription is only for access to Weather, Traffic data and map updates through your phones HotSpot WIFI, so a true data connection. The embedded GPS navigation is just the one time activation and will be there for the life of the bike or the screen. My challenge is that getting the bike to connect to your phone's hotspot without you having to set it up each time has yet to happen. At least for me. Not sure how much data the system is using but a good question, possibly something that can be figured out. I also like the Ride Planner app.

      @@ITFZone I like that response👍
      I don't like to have to pay to activate, but if the navigation is active for the life of the bike with no further costs then I could live with that.
      I have had my bike 5 years and never updated the maps, so not a biggie for me. I nearly updated my maps last year for $150 but when I was told if another update came out that year I would have to pay again I declined.
      I use the the ride planner for any decent ride I do as it enables me to pick and force the bike to take the best back roads.
      I also use the HD app all the time just for normal journeys if Im not sure of the route, as its much quicker and easier to find my destination in google maps, copy the address into the HD app and with one click its in the bike, much easier than trying to spell it out one letter at a time in the nav lol

    I have asked this question on multiple YT sites, asked dealers (who know nothing it seems), and even the HD Company (customer service etc.) Never a clear answer... First I am a mapping nut, planning out long custom rides not only for my group, but for friends etc. many of us use a Garmin XT or similar. Love to plan out rides with stops for gas, food, hotels etc. as well as custom routing on roads we wish to take. No re-rerouting not A to B (unless a dinner spot from hotel). As it seems you dive into these things with good information, can you do the following with the Skyline OS navigation? 1) Plan a route on Basecamp and upload to the Nav system? 2) Will stops be included as a single route, or is it like HD Ride Planner where each stop is a separate route. (ex: Route has start, gas, food, gas and final stop hotel - HD Planner imports this as 4 routes and each have to be uploaded, then selected) also, what does it show on screen such as miles/time to next turn or destination etc. Dealers in my area (Dallas) do not seem to know anything about the new Skyline system and most have simply said "well it has Apple CarPlay, use that" but though handy, is not a custom route option.

    Too bad there is not an option for analog gages... I like them better than the new Skyline system.. My old 2016 RG system was definitely more robust, and definitely worked every time. Skyline shuts off and restarts most of the time while riding. At night when the dash goes black and there is nothing there to see it gets worrisome that the whole bike may quit and it has done that at one time. I had to restart at 70mph... not safe at all.

    • @ITFZone

      Now the days are shorter and I am riding to work in the dark every day I can't say I have missed the analog gauges too much but I get it for sure. However I have never had the screen shut off, ever. That is not a "normal" bug so something is wrong if this is occurring for you. We also know the infotainment system is just a screen, it will not prevent the bike from running but for sure without any information on the screen you are riding blind. But again this should not be happening, I would take the outer fairing off and check the harness connections to the screen. I can almost guarantee you have a loose connector, pin in the connector or a damaged wire. The harness has become the #1 suspect of most issues with these new bikes.

    This is a pretty big deal that they've glazed over. I first saw this on the Livewire when it came out and it was a huge turn off then. Several years later it sounds like you've found it quirky and not worth the price in the top tier model. I saw Ryan Urlacher talking about this on his channel recently and he says the cost is $349 for three years. Who knows what the price increase will be each time from there. Sounds to me that this is a great reason to purchase a Limited this year with the old body style and the 6.5 Boom Box GTS. It might be the last year for these free features.

      I was hesitant about the gauges as well and I will admin I do miss my physical versions from time to time but the screen is very easy to read even in full sun conditions. The subscription is really more of a surprise and we are covered for 3 years, will really come down to just how much the renewal is.

  • @jasonshortphd

    WiFi from the phone is STUPID. Hot spot on your phone uses a LOT of power. They should have looked at how Garmin did it. An APP on the phone that communicates to the GPS unit.
    If there is not a GPS based navigation system I will not purchase. I ride in the West of the US and am out of cell phone coverage about 70% of my rides.

    • @ITFZone

      A lot of confusion on this point. The Nav system is GPS and downloaded on your system. So it will work in areas without cellular service. The WIFI connection is required only for Weather and Traffic information. But I do agree I think we could get this information through the cellular data of the phone vs a true WIFI connection and Harley's software fails to connect on its own so its a struggle. Now if you are using CarPlay with Maps or Google maps you get the traffic and weather through the phones cellular data.

    • @jasonshortphd

      @@ITFZone Thanks for clarifying. The traffic on my Garmin is from an APP on the phone that feeds it to the unit. It uses VERY little power.
      So it sounds like the skyline developers just decided to not worry about it and then at the last minute found out there was no cellular modem on the bike and pivoted to “just get it from WiFi”. Lame. I wonder if one of those Verizon mobile hotspots would work better? You could just mount it in your bags. But that is overkill and shouldn’t be needed.

    • @ITFZone

      I have actually tried this, the bike still fails to auto connect to the MIFI. You have to connect it each time you get on the bike, at least most of the time I had to.

      Ciao!

    When I was buying my bike, the salesman told me it has navigation and I’m thinking cool after doing the paperwork coming to the dealer the following day picking it up signing all the paperwork then go to deliver it I get hit with well yeah, it has NAV but you have to pay for it? Harley just likes screw their customers over and over on top of all the woke bullshit! Good job Harley 🙄 PS I’ll never Pay for a map or any subscription it should’ve been included with the bike without a subscription 😡 it was included in my last bike what happened? GREED

      I don't disagree and for CVO owners we would love to use it but it lacks so much from the BOOM version that was included. Just to be clear it is an opt in for navigation. The subscription will just be for map updates, weather and traffic after the initial 2 years included.

      @@ITFZoneI have a Garmin Zumo XT and I love it and to it has no subscription and updates are included , at no cost. It was just the upfront cost for the unit and that was it. I ordered mounting accessories and it will be on my bike. I’m not gonna pay $300 and then a subscription afterwards that’s not happening and also there’s no bugs in my Garmin unit. It works fantastic. so no one can tell me that they have to charge this extravagant amount for GPS on their motorcycles! it was free just a few years back. I know I had a 2021 street glide special NAV was included and it worked without a subscription, this is just gouging at its finest!

    • @ITFZone

      Not sure I am following you say unlimited nav? Without a subscription you will have built in NAV without map updates, traffic or weather. For the base RG and ST you still have to opt into NAV at 350 which comes with 3 years. You are correct you can use any Bluetooth headset now. See my CarPlay video for headset info.
