Ya thats just wrong! Listen to the kid he knows what he’s talking about. No matter where we lived in Ontario my dad has always had rhubarb growing in the backyard. Funny story he was waiting for his rhubarb to come in to “season” when the stalks have a nice bit of red on them and they are the “right” size usually around June to mid June timeframe. Anyway every time he would check on it, it seemed to be getting smaller. He told me about this and said this was the only house where he’d ever grown rhubarb where the plant just seemed to be getting smaller. Of course I was quick to point out he was getting older (mid 60’s) and perhaps he was just forgetting in between checking on it. He looked at me with disgust at my rude comment. I said well are there any dead leaves surrounding it? Maybe it’s not the right soil? Dad said this is good Canadian soil rhubarb grows anywhere in Ontario!! I said okay well what else could it be? He said he didn’t know but he was thinking about setting up a video camera on it the way deer hunters set cameras in certain areas so they know the times of day when the deer pass. I said ohhhh a video watching rhubarb grow...now there’s some good down home entertainment! At which point I high tailed it out of the room for fear of retribution. Lol! Well a few days later dad said well I’m happy to inform you I have finally figured out why my rhubarb is getting smaller! I said oh??? Trying to show an inkling of an interest. He said yes you know those “boys” across the street, I said oh that immigrant family from Sri Lanka? I said yes? I thought oh this may get interesting! He said I was on the back deck early one afternoon when the boys were running around and I noticed the older boy over by my rhubarb plant. I said oh? He said he had a little pocket knife and he was cutting off a bunch of the stalks with the leaves attached. Dad said he asked him if he like rhubarb? And the kid sheepishly nodded and said he was taking it to his mother who was turning it in to different sweet treats. Dad said well I’m the one growing this batch and it’s in my backyard. The kid nodded still not really aware he had done anything wrong. My dad has always been a very kind person and loves to share anything he has. He asked the young boy if he would like to grow rhubarb in his backyard. Dad said the kids eyes became as big as saucers at the sheer possibility that he could grow it as well. Dad explained that in the fall he would show him how to split his plant and would give him half and he could dig a hole in his backyard and plant it there. Then the following spring he would see it sprout up and he too would have a rhubarb plant that he could take cuttings from all summer long well at least unit it got “woody” which he explained to the young boy. The young boy realizing now that this plant belonged to my dad and that he maybe shouldn’t have been taking the pieces that he had been offered my dad the 6-7 long stalks with leaves still attached. Dad said the boy put his head down when he tried to give dad the stalks which of course he refused he said oh you take those home to your mother so she can make you some sweet treats. My dad said he liked his as a sauce that he would boil down with sugar and then eat it cold with a scoop of vanilla ice cream in the middle or if my mom was in a pie baking mood she would bake him some rhubarb pies or strawberry-rhubarb pies. He asked the young boy if he would not take anymore stalks for the next couple of weeks so he could get his share of rhubarb and the boy promised he wouldn’t take any more. My dad said and then after that just cut the leaves off and leave them around the bottom of the plant it will help the plant continue to grow. So that was the plan and then in late August my dad saw the “boys” out playing that “weird game with a tennis ball where they keep it in the air with hitting it with their feet” he said to the young boy are you ready to plant rhubarb in your backyard?! “YES SIR!!” He came and between the two of them dug up part of dad’s rhubarb and put it in a cardboard box for him to carry home to plant in his backyard. He told the young boy to make sure it was okay with his mother and father first so it wouldn’t be in line with a lawnmower. He said he was going to do the same as Dad and plant it next to his back fence. Next spring Dad saw the young lad and asked him how his rhubarb was growing and the boy gave him a big thumbs up! Then early one June evening Dad had a knock at the door and it was the young boy with all his siblings and the boys parents, Dad opened the door and the young boy said “sir these are my parents and my dad smiled and said hello, the young boy said they don’t speak much English but they want to thank you so much for the wonderful thing you did. My dad not thinking about the rhubarb was a bit puzzled. My dad said what did I do?? The boy put his thumb up and said the rhubarb! And my dad kinda scoffed and said oh that was nothing! The boy said “sir that was a BIG something for us!! It ensures we get treats regularly!! And my mom has never baked a pie before this was her first ever and she wanted you to have it. At which point his mother pulled a pie out from a box that his father had been carrying it was a small pie compared to the pies my mom made and my dad was so surprised he didn’t know what to say he knew this family was still pretty new to Canada and didn’t have a whole lot. My dad said oh no you take that pie home and feed your family with it. The little boy translated and the mother’s look was sadness she thought it was being refused because it wasn’t the prettiest looking of pies and thought my dad didn’t want it. So the boy explained that my dad had to take the pie or his mother would be incredibly sad that this was a gift to thank him for giving them such a wonderful gift. So my dad said he gave her a big smile and said thank you very much it was very kind of her to think of him. My dad told me about this exchange and we both laughed because the year before I truly thought he was losing it because of his shrinking rhubarb. So every spring I ask Dad if his rhubarb has begun shrinking yet and we both have a hearty laugh over it. He said hey some of the best things in life come from a shrinking rhubarb plant and I said oh? Thinking he was going to say something like the spirit of growing a community and not just a plant or something profound like that but he just smiled and said yes PIE 🥧 with a big thumbs up 👍🏻 LOL! Hope you don’t mind that I shared the story here, I was just reminded of that from quite a few years ago now. My mom and dad live in a different home now but even in their late 70’s they still have rhubarb growing in the backyard and my mom still makes pies! 🥰🙏🏻🇨🇦

We had rhubarb in our yard & ate it every summer. Never that early or when it was that green & never with salt. It also doesn't need to be peeled. We dipped it in sugar & mom baked all kinds of rhubarb desserts with it.

In Google, we have all natural growing rhubarb(mostly green one) here in iran which is so much different than this, I'm a big lover of rhubarb😂 I eat this as a snack raw, with salt(cut rhubarb in small pieces and put it in a bowl add salt and let it rest for 1h to 2h, water will come out of rhubarb) and the last way to eat it is with(نمک سبز) wich is mix of some local vegetable and salt(like a dip)
