Past all the rock business genre names and phases this time in rock was fun particularly in the US...power pop rock or just modern Beat group sound...just good ole rock
I just saw him last night and there were fewer than ten people there. He was amazing nonetheless and still living the dream. This shit does not get old.
I was absolutely crazy about this band. Unfortunately, my entire huge record collection was stolen and these were some of the songs I missed most. Thanks to U-Tube I am now hearing songs I feared I'd never hear again like those by Robin Lane and the Replacements and The Beat!
That's really sad to sad. I knew him years ago and he was the bomb. Joe Strummer from the Clash had some nasty incidents as well when he got older and people were ignorant.
I just discovered this band at my work, when mr. collins called us regarding with his site and i check out his band when i get home, and i cant believe that he was a legendary musician, i hope i can watch him live and playing all of the beat songs. greetings from philippines :)
I regard these guys as power pop. Thank goodness for the power pop bands of the late 70's and early 80's - there was not much else to listen to at that time unless you liked new wave/punk or techno........... Paul Collins beat very underrated - many thanks for posting !
Such a great album to this day, came out the year I graduated from high school. Had the album for the turntable and the cassette for the car. Pop it in and off to the party.
saw Paul Collins couple of months ago at the blue star cafe and met him. They sounded amazing and Paul was such a down to earth guy. It was a tiny gig.
The English Beat is touring with The Paul Collins Beat right now. Dave Wakeling from the UK Beat is friends with Paul Collins from the USA Beat. I'm actually going to see them play together in about 2 weeks.
@ar4216 Some people in the USA referred to the English Beat as the Beat, but contractually, they were always "th English Beat", and yes, it was because of this group... Going the other way, the group known as the Spinners in North america were called "the Detroit Spinners" in the UK and Ireland.
There are very few videos of The Beat by Paul Collins and having the same name as The Beat with Dave Wakeling as lead singer of the 80s group Ska does not help at all. I remember that album there was by 79-80 with very good songs
@bobo007xx Powerpop is the right term because it expresses energy. New Wave is just a term that the Record industtry moguls came up with just to get the new sounds that were coming out on the radio.
Seeing them too in Milwaukee. Hey bladesmark1....The English Beat were known in the UK as The Beat but had to change it to The English Beat because this band already existed. In addition the wrote the song "Hanging on the Telephone" which Blondie made famous. Just so you know.
Jack Lee wrote "Hanging on the Telephone" while he was in The Nerves with Peter Case and Paul Collins. Peter went on to form The Plimsouls and Paul formed The Beat after The Nerves split up.
Imagine for how many years things must've sucked for Paul Collins, I mean, makes some excellent songs with The Nerves with no real success, Blondie steals his sunshine and probably a lot of money & not quite there with Paul Collins Beat. Legend status in record store circles doesn't quite seem enough.
@theonlytruepunk I thought they were called The New Originals ... LOL Anyway in the late 70's/early 80's, Squeeze were originally UK Squeeze in the U.S. because there was an American band called Tight Squeeze. There was another band called U.K. (a descendant of King Crimson) so there was some confusion between UK and UK Squeeze, although not much because of the difference in styles, over here, and U.K. disappeared pretty quickly.
Where are they now? Paul Collins-actively touring & recording with his newer group billed as The Paul Collins Beat. Steve Huff-graduated with a university degree in the 1990s, works for a hog semen supplier. Michael Ruiz-after years of touring as a drummer, Ruiz found his niche as a screen printer. Larry Whitman-talented guitarist died of mysterious circumstances in 1995. RIP Whitman. Dennis Conway-versatile drummer has played for Alice Cooper, Elton John & many more.
Hi Hector! We are working on a documentary and would love to get in touch with you regarding 70s bands like The Beat. Is there an email where we can contact you? Thank you!
Not on American TV, BBC union rules would at least require a "live" performance before the actual show. Check out the "Old Grey Whistle Test" if you want a few hundred examples
the beat was awesome.the 1st album was classic but then they had to change the name of the band to the paul collins beat because of the band the english beat but the music was still great,power-pop was the shit!!

And Green Day is revered. Life's not fair. Paul Collins helps me overcome life. Truly a talent and legend.

One of the finest rock songs ever.

These kids are absolutely stunning, nothing compares. Genius!!!
Thanks Stephen!

I fell the rock teenager's inspiration to the 90's 2000 .... very good music.

Never gets old 😀😀
Love power pop!
great song.......no way to deny
this is an american band, which is why our UK 'The Beat' are known as 'The English Beat' in the US

This reminds me of that old Christian band "The Alter Boys", pop that i could never get tired of.
Pure pop goodliness.

I recorded this off AM radio in about 1979...
@ar4216 Some people in the USA referred to the English Beat as the Beat, but contractually, they were always "th English Beat", and yes, it was because of this group... Going the other way, the group known as the Spinners in North america were called "the Detroit Spinners" in the UK and Ireland.

Al señor Collins lo he visto algunas veces por Madrid, en la Ferroviaria.

Steven Huff always reminded me of the great Peter Asher.
There are very few videos of The Beat by Paul Collins and having the same name as The Beat with Dave Wakeling as lead singer of the 80s group Ska does not help at all.
I remember that album there was by 79-80 with very good songs
The best
💗
You could re release it today and people would go nuts

Ah, I remember it well -- like the Ramones -- but a little less edgy. Thanks for uploading.

he has same name as me
Where can you find more songs by this band?
Like the song! Sounded a bit like "We Got the Beat" when it started?
Actually The Nerves wrote Hanging on the Telephone..
The Nerves- The Beat (P.Collins)- The Plimsouls- Jack Lee- Peter Case
wish someone would upgrade vid quality.
What?? I love PC. What's it gonna be like?

This was 'safe' Punk rock.
Does anyone have a video of "You Won't Be Happy" by Paul Collins and The Beat.
On American Bandstand, I guess, right?
