  • Chapter 261 has shown Yuta crossing a line he never hoped to, a line that only the antagonists have crossed thus far in the story. Yuta has become a monster, and in this video I'll be breaking down its significance.

What I like about Yuta is just the fact that unlike Gojo, Sukuna and Kenjaku, even when he is becoming a monster he does so only for those he cherishes - Sukuna does everything only for himself and his entertainment, Kenjaku wants to create something that is much stronger than him in order to see the limits of a cursed energy because of his own curiousity and Gojo became monster to survive and defeat Toji even though there were no one to defend anymore. And here is Yuta who wants to defend the whole population of Japan and his friends.

Not to mention the formula for reverse curse energy is curse energy multiplying with curse energy. Showing positives can be born from negative. Jogo has always been the best example of this, he wanted a future for his kind at the top, but at the same time he wasn’t power hungry as the rest to reach his full potential. Mahito also shows some selfless actions regarding the curses like protecting Hanami from getting killed after she was hit with purple, or only doubting Geto as he trust the curses absolutely to not betray him.

It's very interesting that of all the "monsters" portrayed in JJK so far, only Sukuna had that mindset from day 1. Gojo was pushed to become one on the brink of death; Toji was only a monster when completely devoid of his thoughts and feelings; and Yuta became a monster because no one else was willing to.
The only person who might be the same in this regard is Hakari but we have no idea if his mindset shifted or he was born that way.
It seems everyone fighting Sukuna at this point is trying to imitate something they aren't fully capable of, completely casting aside their humanity and burning everything around them to the ground. But they can't do that. Because at the end of the day, they're still human no matter how many insane superpowers they get.
It's also very interesting that Yuji has been kept in the dark about all this, not just because of what we learned in 259 but because we don't see how he would react. Would he be just as eager to cross the line, or attempt to stick to his humanity?

If Yuuji breaks and does become a monster that means Sukuna won in ideals and I dont think thats where the story will be. Although Yuuta and Gojo were their own protagonists, Gege have had to make Yuuji the exception to everything everyone else to be name the one of the three protagonist of JJK. Yuuji is different, not because of how he was made but who he is. Yuuji not knowing whats going on imo is like a shield from breaking him further. Thank you for making the organ donor analogy. I've seen no one else do it and while it isn't a perfect analogy I think Yuta is seeing both Gojo and himself essentially donating themselves to the cause. Also, one of the most important things to come out of this chapter for me was that Gojo killed the higher ups and not Yuta or Yuta and Inumaki which had previously been speculated. It never set right with me that Gojo or the others would have sent students to do that job and I was very pleased to see it was, in fact Gojo himself that did it. And I think it parallels Geto very well.

I really love that the mirroring themes of love, humanity and monsters and the whole intertwining lines between Yuta and both Geto and Gojo were laid out back in JJK0.
    1) Yuta's pure love was introduced as a counterpart to Geto and it defeated him (he also took it upon himself to do it a second time with Geto's body for Gojo's sake).
    2) Gojo was the one who told Yuta that love is the most twisted curse of all.
    3) Geto was the one who pushed Gojo to try and define himself outside of "the pillar of strength" role he was given since birth which led to Gojo finding his own goal as a teacher.
    4) Yuta was the first in the line of Gojo's legacy among his students.
    6) Both Geto and Gojo became monsters in their own ways to achieve what they desired and both are gone without being able to do so. Interestingly, Gojo said he had to catch up to Geto before killing the higher-ups. Back then, he thought there could be another way to change the system but realized there really wasn't. And it's the last thing Gojo said to Yuta.
    7) And now Yuta is the only one who understands that there is no other way to achieve what he wants than to become a monster himself. Yuta is still doing it for love (for the people he cares about) but the way he has to do is anything but pure. Twisted one would say.
p.s. And we will have our answer to "Are you the strongest because you're Gojo Satoru or are you Gojo Satoru because you're the strongest". it's all coming together

We have never seen him having fun while fighting.
The difference is maybe betting on yourself vs betting on trust.
This was the same theme in DB Super in the fight vs universe 11.
Sukuna says to cast aside everything for your ideals, that is what Toppo did and got defeated by Vegeta holding onto his bonds.

@@Endisfree_ Yuji doesnt fit into either camp though, for eons hes had a "cog in the wheel mentality" one in which hes not the one doing it, no matter what he could always blame somone else
Even when he said "Id eat anything to kill that creep" you misquoted as "I'll do whatever it takes."
It was with the aproval of others, not something a monster seeks, yuta knew he wouldnt get it from everyone else so he shut them up.
If anything yujis going to end up as a tool for somone else with his current mentality in the same way hes been kept in the dark with todos fate or yutas plan.
Hes stuck in the akward middle ground.

@@Endisfree_ You got it wrong. Yuji's dynamic with Sukuna and the reason why he is the protagonist and not Yuta is because Yuji's ideals and soul are unbreakable. Sukuna hates him because Yuji is rising to his level WITHOUT losing his humanity, which shouldn't be possible. It's also the reason why Sukuna was happy to see that he managed to push Yuta this far and he physically casts Yuji aside as "boring" when in reality he sees Yuji's humanity as a threat. Yuji never casted aside his humanity, his name literally means "unwavering humanity/benevolence" and Gege always said his main trait is his kindness. That's the whole point of his characters and his drive. Even when he rages he does it out of love for the people he cares about.
Choso gave him the wombs as an act of love, a way for them to help Yuji and them "llive on" with him. It's honoring them, not like using Gojo's body. The whole "eat anything" is about cursed objects, Yuji wouldn't have eaten actual people obviously. He will be the exception and prove Sukuna wrong and that is why Sukuna can't stand Yuji specifically. Without that, the dynamic makes no sense and Yuta could very well be the one to defeat Sukuna

I find it interesting that JJK keeps showing Nietszchean ideas over and over again. Nietzsche had spoken of how man is a path in between the ape and something greater, a bridge for what he called the "Overman". The Overman and the "monster" in JJK are so similar. The Overman is a being that has gone beyond good and evil, he has no pity, no compassion and only seeks power: to achieve his greatest potential through hardship and struggle. Sukuna embodies this ideal: he doesn't care about immortality or conquering the world, he only seeks the vitality of combat, to face death over and over again by challenging powerful opponents. I don't agree with the idea that compassion and love are weaknesses, but I love how JJK shows this tragic phenomena: having to sacrifice part of what makes you human (morality) in order to achieve greater heights: not only for power in itself, but sometimes, for the sake of your loved ones.

Do you remember Hollow Zangetsu's speech from Bleach ? Here it is : Ichigo, whats the difference between a KING and a HORSE ? And Im not talking obvius stuff... FORM,ABILITY and POWER ! That's whats puzzling, if their FROM, ABILITY and POWER are exactly the same, why is it that one becomes the KING and leads them into battle, while the other becomes thr HORSE and carries the KING, so what's the characteristic that distinguishes these two being ? There is only one answer.... INSTICT ! In order for identical beings to get stronger and GAIN POWER, they need to develop a killer INSTICT, and that INSTICT is mostly forged in battle. They must develop an insatiable hunger to engage in battle. They must live to MERCILESSLY CRUSH shred and SLICE their enemies, this thrist for POWER is not an unnatural desire. In fact it forms the very essence of our being, deep within our body lies the honed INSTICT to and SLAUGTHER our ENEMIES. My friend you dont have that, you USE your BRAIN to TRY and WIN a FIGHT, you attempt to DEFEAT your ENEMIES with REASON and LOGIC, you dont tap into those PURE based INSTICTS that EXIST within your CORE, waiting to be RELEASED and the simple matter is is doesn't work, your WEAK, Ichigo !

I think another thing to note is Yuta's shining empathy. Out of all the characters who have been dubbed "monsters," I would argue Yuta is the only one to become a monster BECAUSE of his humanity. Yuta makes an effort to understand others at every opportunity, even when they are very different from him. He sits and talks with Ishigori. He listens to Maki's troubles. He refuses to let Gojo stand alone. This is empathy, his capacity to emulate the abilities of others, pushed to it's farthest extreme. He makes this sacrifice because he is the only one who can understand Gojo--the only one who can physically take this burden with Kenjaku's technique.

His mind is still focused on protecting his friends and being loved whereas the others didn’t care about that. He’s only put one foot over the edge of humanity but hasn’t completely committed to it out of fear of losing what he wants I think. Yuta cant have both, he cant win and remain human enough to have what he always wanted. He’s too attached to Maki, Panda and Inumaki to become an absolute monster

One thing I really like is how jujutsu kaisen doesn't even say that abandoning one's humanity for freedom is inherently better.
Sure not letting things tie you down or restricting yourself is one thing.
But abandoning humanity? The story kinda calls that out as utter bs.
Take Kenjaku, he wanted a human connection but rejected it when Takaba first arrived. He rejected what he wanted. Even the merger is simply a form of merging people to be rid of negative emotions and never be alone in some sick way.
Sukuna we've seen be insanely hypcritical as of late. It's too much to list.
But take someone like Yuki. She didn't die with regrets explicitly, despite not getting a post death scene.
And if you look at Jogo, he got the best end of the disaster curses, despite rejecting his path to strength again and again.
And no there's Yuta. This is going to be an insane buff and make him top 3 of all time definetly. But he won't win, not at all.
Take someone like Megumi who is noted as having potential again and again. He never gave up any of his humanity, and yet kept climbing higher and higher.
Yuta didn't want to do this at all. Yet he forced himself anyway. It is something he wants, not letting his friends dying, but he simply wasn't greedy enough.
Someone like Sukuna or Megumi would climb higher without sacrifice, they're that greedy.
It's even a parallel with Yuji eating the curse wombs. Yuji has some regret regarding it, but was very matter of fact. And it's framed as giving them a way to live on. To inherit their will like with Nanami.
With Yuta, it's framed as something Gojo is mixed on, and it's an inhumane step.

Yuta was always on this path to becoming a monster, imo. We have seen in the Culling Games that he was more than willing to stain his hands red. If it's for the sake of those he cherishes or if they have the same interest/goal. He had the determination to singlehandedly collect 400 points by killing numerous players. With this we have seen how far he will go, and now we see taking it further by him becoming a monster AND it's still because for the sake of those HE cherishes.
