  • Even smart people need a little direction sometimes (except for Graeme, who is perfect always), and The Intellectual Life by A.G. Sertillanges helps us all in the disciplines of intellectualism.

I was introduced to Sertillanges through Cal Newport's book "Deep Work". I'm not Catholic and was struck by how much of a St. Thomas Aquinas fanboy Sertillanges was, but I found a lot to like in "The Intellectual Life". There's a lot that oddly parallels Newport's thoughts on focus and "deep work", jumping from early 20th century clerical life to 21st century knowledge work and academia.

"It also excluses a certain archaeological tendancy, a love of the past which turns away from present suffering, an esteem for the past which seems not to recognize the universal presence of God." I feel like he's calling you gentlemen out ;)

This is a fascinating discussion, thank you! Have you already heard of Zena Hitz's "Lost in Thought: The Hidden Pleasures of an Intellectual Life"? Highly recommended, and it inspired me to make a video on this topic too.

I think u guys are overestimating the current intellectuals.. ie scholars... most of them at least in my opinion dont learn to think well... this is a book for them as well not just for amateurs..

Very true! But since the three of us aren't scholars, I definitely focused on the more amateur intellectual side of things. I agree that this book has something to say to anyone who thinks, which is to say everyone. Thanks for listening!
