  • I chat with Fr. Pine about what it means to be an intellectual being, and how we may be looking at the contemplative life and the life of holiness, from the wrong perspective.
    What are some things you've done that have helped you grow in your intellectual life? Leave a Comment!

    The Pulley
    BY GEORGE HERBERT
    When God at first made man,
    Having a glass of blessings standing by,
    “Let us,” said he, “pour on him all we can.
    Let the world’s riches, which dispersèd lie,
    Contract into a span.”
    So strength first made a way;
    Then beauty flowed, then wisdom, honour, pleasure.
    When almost all was out, God made a stay,
    Perceiving that, alone of all his treasure,
    Rest in the bottom lay.
    “For if I should,” said he,
    “Bestow this jewel also on my creature,
    He would adore my gifts instead of me,
    And rest in Nature, not the God of Nature;
    So both should losers be.
    “Yet let him keep the rest,
    But keep them with repining restlessness;
    Let him be rich and weary, that at least,
    If goodness lead him not, yet weariness
    May toss him to my breast.”

    Excellent! Some great quotes:
    "Contemplation is about thinking and loving - about BEING - and it's not bound up with what you do."
    "We should cultivate a sense about thinking about the right things and loving the right things because that's when we are most properly human, that's where we are fully alive."
    "When I've been the happiest it's always felt like a foretaste of something more... it's not enough... there is this yearning for 'I know not what...'"

    I'm just starting this book now. I only wish someone had put it into my hands 10 or 15 years ago. Somehow I made it through grad school, but I spent so much of that time as my own worst enemy.

    What a fascinating conversation! I wonder if you heard of Zena Hitz's "Lost in Thought: The Hidden Pleasures of an Intellectual Life"? It talks about an interesting intersection between spirituality and intellect too.

    Question: In the Liturgy of the Hours, what is the difference between Prime and Lauds? Why did Vatican II eliminate Prime? Is it possible to find the Prime prayer(s) and pray them today?
    I ask, because I bought the book you flashed on the screen, 'The Intellectual Life: Its Spirit, Conditions, Methods' by A.G. Sertillanges, O.P. In Chapter 4, The Time of Work, III Mornings and Evenings, Fr. Sertillanges suggests praying Prime upon waking and Compline before sleeping. I was surprised to learn that Prime was deleted from the Liturgy of the Hours after Vatican II. Of course, I could simply substitute the Morning Prayers (Lauds?) for Prime, but my curiosity has been piqued.
    I loved your interview with Fr. Pine and I'm loving the book. I'd never heard of it before. I was raised a conservative Lutheran (Wisconsin synod), turned my back on God for 20 years after the death of my infant son, but then converted to Catholicism in 2012. Searching for movie reviews before going out with my wife, I stumbled upon Bishop Robert Barron's Word on Fire. Stayed up all night watching his videos on TH-cam. Never did catch a movie.

      In the old Divine Office, besides being prayed at different times, Lauds and Prime differ considerably in length and content. Old Lauds has four Psalms and two Canticles, including the Benedictus. Prime consists of three Psalms and was often said with the Martyologium.
      If you want to pray Prime and Compline like many lay people did previously, one of the best ways to do so is using the traditional Little Office of the Blessed Virgin. You can find a lovely edition of this at Baronius Press. One advantage of the Little Office is there is only seasonal changes so it is easy to memorize and use as a lay person.
      The new Liturgy of the Hours has changed things significantly, including shortening the offices to a great degree. This is at least in part because its designers wanted the offices to be more easily prayed by the laity. Most lay people who are interested in praying the offices seem to just do Lauds, Vespers, and Compline if they are able.
      You can find the entire old breviary here online (including Prime):

      Also, Liturgy of the Hours is usually the name given to the reformed offices so one can't really ask about the differences between Lauds and Prime in the LotH because Prime no longer exists in the current breviary.
