  • Pioneer DJ's battle-style series of controllers kicked off with the entry-level REV1 and top-end REV7 back in 2022. But there's always been a sizeable gap between the two, and now the DDJ-REV5 has arrived to fill that hole. With mechanical CDJ-sized jog wheels, lots of stems-related features, and support for both Serato DJ Pro and rekordbox, it's set to open the REV line to a new audience of DJs. Mojaxx gives it an in-depth review on this episode of #BeatsourceTech.

Hey everyone, Mojaxx here. As I was watching the video back this morning I realised I totally missed one of my favourite features in the final edit. By holding down the Stems button on the opposite deck, you can do a version of Stems Split, so the selected stem moves across to the other deck.
This episode went through multiple versions, mainly because I was trying to not make it too long, and somehow that slipped through the cracks. I think that’s the first time I’ve ever failed to include something so important (and cool).
I might do a supplementary video, or maybe a short, to show it to you. But for now I can only apologise to you.

    Thanks for the review!
I don’t see the purpose of the REV console series except for the REV7, that is an amazing controller and is a real alternative to the scratch Djs that don’t want to carry turntables but want the same feeling. I have it for several months and I can’t do without it anymore. First I thought the REV was a series of “turntablist oriented” consoles but technically its not like that, since the REV1 and the REV5 can do the same stuff that the other respectively budget and mid/high pioneer controllers can do, (except for the stems feature, maybe) if I’m a scratch Dj I would not but them, maybe for (slightly) the same amount of money of the REV5 I would buy a rane one. But if I’m more a “mixing” Dj I would go with other kind of consoles from pioneer, because in this case REV5s layout would be a little awkward (the pitch sliders position for example). It would be interesting if pioneer released the REV5 as a budget version of the REV7, halfway between a Rane One and the Hercules, motorized platters with no displays on the jog wheels, no built in fx, to lower the price, but I guess at least for now we will not see it.

I’ve mentioned this elsewhere, but this is the controller we all wanted when they came out with the 1000 (which I own and enjoy). It mirrors the setup I keep at home with my decks, but after using the 1000 (and maybe being left handed) I’ve grown to prefer the play/cue buttons on the left with the pitch faders club style to the right of the jogs. If my 1000 was up for retirement this would be the new controller for me but I’m hoping in a few years they make a unit setup like cdj’s but with the mixer battle style. Just my two cents.

I love my REV7, so the REV5 looks like a legit piece of kit. Kinda jealous of some of the hardware Stems functions that are not on the REV7, so hopefully some of them + other features could make it there via firmware update. But as a DJ who started on turntables, as well as having been a user of the DJM-S9, the attraction of the REV7 that combines both was too good to pass up. I think the REV5 is gonna sell well and will be very pleasing for open-format DJs at a not-too-shabby price point. Thanks for the great review, as ever!

Hey all, so I saw this pop up at midnight, and was thinking… what the hell.
Now after looking at the review, I get it. It’s not a bad controller at all. I would say this is more mid entry/club controller.
Price wise in 2023 (definitely acceptable)
As a turntableist this is not for me. However I know many DJs that would be very happy with the REV5. And some of the stem features are amazing.
Now moving forward, for Pioneer dj. I’m the clubs I use the Rev7… and what I am about to say, I am sure many DJs will agree. -- we need to see a firmware update for the REV7 with the stem features on the EQ knobs.
That look so amazing!!! Lol so this pop up in the FlX10 and now on the Rev5.
And as always, I say this all the time. We still need to see a stand-alone CDJ style moving platters deck from Pioneer dj. Think of the Rev7 platters with all the new updates in a CDJ 3000 😅

    • @djmartinsk

Stems separation is NOT Hardware feature!!! Stems separation is SOFTWARE feature!!! REV 5 is ONLY Software CONTROLLER!
REV 5 or REV 7 doesnt have any other standalone hardware functions apart from the audio interface! (except for the EFX unit - REV7 only).
You cannot add any function by updating the firmware of REV5 or REV7, because REV5 and REV7 only control the computer DJ software! Nothing more.

This is closer to what I want if one can disable the crossfader and use it to control the video side only ( like one is able to on dedicated 4 channel fader 🎚️ mixers ).
If Rane redoes the four with the extra button would be ideal

Bought it out of curiosity to play with Serato stems since Rekordbox still sounds too robotic. Only thing I miss from the DDJ-1000 are the jog wheel displays. Didn’t realize how much I used them for seeing my cues and BPMs. Regardless I like how well the Rev5 works with both softwares.

Pioneer 📢🎤🎙noted the company makes OUTSTANDING CONTROLLERS 👑
But when are the all in one units that are WiFi capable, can operate without a laptop, and can also use internal or external drives ? The Pioneer Xdj series are great but not the best. I have known and have had Pioneer products since the early 1980's so I can add my opinion. I own and have used Pioneer, Roland, Numark, Rane and Denon. It is a matter of choice true, but no way will I pay for the Rev series. But if Pioneer can match or surpass the Denon Dj SC or Denon Dj Prime series, I may spend the money.
I will say the Rev 5 is great for anyone coming into the world of dj'ing or a seasoned pro who just wants to add to their collection.

I think the The Rev 5 has put a massive stop to the Hype of the Hercules Inpulse t7. Just based on better crossfader. @@rapwithzorro I’m just a hobbyist so take my opinion with a grain of salt, but I think the T7 is the better deal of the two on paper. I like the spinning platters of the T7 but the layout of the Rev5 more (a lot more actually). But the fact that the Rev5 can’t operate as a standalone mixer and is still $1100 is pretty baffling. Even if that meant it would cost $100 more to include that functionality I think it would have been a worth it and I would have put it ahead of the T7. That being said since neither are out yet I wonder about durability for both but especially for the T7 since its platters are belt driven.

I do not like how the rev 5 and flx 6 can't act as stand alone mixers. I hope Pioneer does not replace the SR2 and DDJ 800 with these. I like that I can run my home set up through my SR2 (even though I need external phono pre amps) and I can take it out to gig with as well.

For this controller to have NO motorized decks, it costs way too much. The Hercules Inpulse T7 is $700. I would go with that.

Once you price in the fader upgrades that mojaxx mentioned that don’t exist yet it’s 900 vs 1100 at that point you are saving 200 for completely off brand controller with neither a serato unlock or rekordbox unlock but yeah motorised jogs

I use a REV-7, and it's still my favourite controller ever. I now use it with Virtual DJ, mainly because of the superior stem separation, and it's a phenomenal unit. Unfortunatly, without hardware FX, I'm struggling to see how the REV-5 justifies it's price tag. It's like an upgraded SX, but only 2 channels. If it were a couple of hundred pound cheaper, I'd get it, but as it is, I don't.

I'm a rev7 user also. I thought about VDJ but we're lying to ourselves thinking its stems are superior to serato. It's just not.

    • @TimWrightDJ
      @TimWrightDJ 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

@@aj6761 I don't believe you've ever compared them side by side. Most people will agree that VDJs stems 2.0 is well ahead of the competition.

    • @djmartinsk
      @djmartinsk 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

@@iamdjcertified2 No. So far, only Pioneer stuffs these flimsy USB-C sockets into their products. Absolutely unsuitable!
USB-B 3.x sockets are massive and much more resistant to breakage.
Don't confuse the type of socket with a USB interface. A USB-B 3.1 socket has the same transfer rate as a USB-C 3.1 .

USB C is a no go - those ports are flimsy compared to robust industry standard B style and it's going to fail hard on mobile users.

How can this controller have a full pitch control range together with full CDJ sized wheels and Magvel Faders, yet the regular DDJ/FLX controllers have those same features at twice the price?! Pioneer intentionally hinder their DDJ/FLX line of gear to make you pay more for the same features. Or how about them discontinuing the DDJ-800/FLX-8 line due to it being too good for it's price? No wonder Denon has started eating your market share. I would be amazed if you don't get replaced as the standard club gear in 2 years if you keep this shit up.
