Whether or not you think the censorship is important is up to you to decide; however, I believe that everyone should be informed of the changes that this version of the game makes from the original Japanese Wii U release so that everyone can make an informed decision when buying. Tokyo Mirage Sessions' censorship is a lot to go into, but the most prominent examples of changes that the western version of the game made from the original Japanese version is as follows: 1. Modified and/or replaced character designs along with several costumes acquired throughout the game as well as several enemy designs (with varying degrees of quality). 2. Drastically changed the overall tone, meaning, aesthetic, and context of one of the game's dungeons, shifting the narrative away from the subject of gravure modeling to just standard modeling. 3. A DLC which emphasized character interactions was never localized due to said DLC taking place in a hot spring with characters being shown in swimsuits (nothing in the DLC was particularly risque, as the characters were all wearing standard swimsuits for the most part). 4. The age of several characters had been increased, i.e a girl who was originally seventeen had her age raised to eighteen (which begs the question of why several of the costumes needed to be modified in the first place). 5. Many other (seemingly pointless) visual changes. There's more to it than this if one really wishes to go into detail regarding the game's various changes from the original Japanese version; however, these are the most glaring, straight to the point examples of how the game was modified from its original release. TL;DR: The game changed and/or removed several costumes, heavily modified the narrative of a dungeon, never localized a DLC because of swimsuits, raised character ages, and modified a number of other visuals.
This is more of a modern phantasy Star game, if phantasy Star was in modern times. Almost the exact style sound and definitely the exact kind of gameplay and 3D realm walking
Just a quick reminder, this is the censored US Wii U version. Even Japan got this censored version, which did not go over well. Nintendo messed up so bad there, they issued an apology and offered refunds for digital purchases in Japan.

Yeah, but gameplay is worth it. Ignore the idol hate, if you like JRPGs and good Japanese pop music, this is a great game. They have music videos, you can skip tons of enemy encounters if you want by slashing them in the overworld, the characters get actual character growth and mature, and that sessions battle system can get freaking ridiculous by late game, with multiple super attack performances to extend the sessions in the middle, half of which are mini in game versions of the music videos. It was also one of the best uses of the Gamepad on the Wii U, but that's pretty irrelevant now. Seriously, this game is a sleeper hit, I highly recommend trying it if you can get past the idol theme and sub only. I even got my athletic bro who only really plays Persona for JRPGs into this game and he loved the battling so much, he maxed out his characters levels in the bonus battling area without even realizing. I mean, he never finished the game cause he became too OP after doing that, but still, the fact that him, a guy who hates idol culture and weebiness (aside from his Persona love) into it really shows the quality of it as another top notch Atlus game

@@143622010 with my limited knowledge of Japanese some in game lines tell you weakness or boss backstory, I know that in the first boss Chrom or Dragon knight lady mention that they knew him or of him and some fact, while also have tons of small talk dialogue with the characters talking to each other not just of the battle but things going on with them in the real world, like after doing a special performance, Itsuki will praise Tsubasa on getting better and she send praise back, Persona Q 2 also has tons of dialogue like this and it sucks they weren't subbed or dubbed as there really fun dialogue in both games
@@143622010 No, it's not gonna die because of that, but it's another failure in the localization. It's the lack of dub and censorship that are gonna kill it in the US. The censorship has already affected Japanese sales enough to cause the original Wii U version to become an Amazon top seller when the game released over there, and an already niche game is just more niche when there is a portion of the audience that wouldn't want to buy a censored game and another part that wouldn't buy a game without a dub. The battle subtitles are just another cap in the feather of the number of things they did wrong, and this is coming from someone who owns 3 copies of the game (Wii U physical, digital, and switch digital already pre-loaded). These are all marketing failures, and the stupid part is that any sales they earn by being rated T are more than offset by the expenses they put into censoring the game and the lost sales from the lack of dub and people who refuse to buy a censored product.

I know, I've been waiting since they announced it. I bought it the second I saw it on the shop. I'm so excited I could cry, but I won't cause that'll make it hard to watch the music videos, lol
I really hope they decide to release an option to play the game uncensored via free DLC or something. There is no reason we can't have both the censored and uncensored version of the game as a choice in the options to make everyone happy.

It's certainly not what anyone was expecting, but it's pretty damn good regardless, they done a good job of combinding FE's weapon triangle with Megaten's (specifically Digital Devil Daga and Strange Journey) battle system.

The Megaten series is pretty much Atlus itself, I mean yeah Atlus has other games, but Megaten has always been the heart and soul of Atlus, so I don't blame the narrator for saying that.

When this came out on Wii U I didn't get it because it seemed too weeb for me Now that I've played Persona 5 it seems just the right amount of weeb for me
Oh, you missed out. It was one of the best uses of the gamepad. The gamepad had the map, and worked as your character's cell phone and was nice to not have to go into a pause screen for that, cause you use it a lot. It doesn't sound like much, but it was really effective for me. The game looks super weeb, but the gameplay is aces. The sessions and special skills make the battle system very fun and it really encourages trying different things out. The only sad thing is they didn't include S tier supports from Fire Emblem, where you date/marry a character. That's the one thing that really is weird, since both Fire Emblem and Persona have pair ups and this basically ends with you getting the A tier FE with everyone. Hopefully Encore will add an S tier. I want to officially date Kiria, lol. I know that's a weeb-y aspect of these games, the dating simulator aspect, but I think that also shows that this game is not designed around that. They go full otaku with the idols, but everything else is pretty straight JRPG goodness

Once you start to grow out of it, or if you're not a weeb and just like the gameplay style of JRPGs, like myself and my friends, it can be hard to get through the dense layer of weeb that is splattered all over this game, and I say that as someone who thinks this is the second best game on the Wii U and is a top 10 game of all time for me

It based on the western version of the game so yes it censored (plus new content, hence encore), oddly enough it’s also the case for the japan switch version so sadly if you wanted to see uncensored content of the game, it would be from a moded wii u version of the game or the original japenese wii u version. Also to note, even though this game only contains japenese voices, the voice acting was changed for some of the script for the western version of the game, so it not just visually censored.
Yeah, the censorship is lame and does screw with the theme of the second dungeon being about embracing your sexuality and becoming comfortable with it. It also locked out some of the Japanese only DLC, and you can't buy the Japanese version to get it uncensored cause this port was based on the censored version. They actually went all out with the localized censorship the first time, bringing in the Japanese VA's to rerecord their lines to fit the new censorship, even though 99% of people in the west wouldn't have realized. That said, the songs and gameplay are boss, highly recommend the game, but if you care about censorship, then highly recommend getting a Japanese Wii U and getting that version of the game. That said, there are some exclusive outfits that were made in response to the censorship. Hopefully they add back in some of the uncensored outfits, even if the game is based on the censored version

It's Yugioh, idol adventures. This is the 10th series of the anime, didn't you know, lol. They abandoned cards and now duel with spirits they summon from another world using spiritual idol music. The funny thing is, that description is actually pretty accurate. It's a surprisingly great game, awesome gameplay, highly recommend it

I am glad to hear that you and many others are able to find enjoyment with the game in its current state; however, there are those who find the localization changes to be unacceptable. For some, even the most minor of alterations is enough to "ruin" a gameplay experience. It is for that very reason that I like to inform people of the "censorship" present within the game. I do not wish to dissuade anyone from purchasing the game, but rather to inform them of the changes in content so that they may make a fully informed decision on whether or not the "censorship" present is enough to "ruin" the game for them.
Best commercial this game has ever had. Still not amazing, but definitely the best yet. Now, you guys need to focus on PATCHING IN A DUB!!! @@romeb.1060 Dude, they spent a fortune making dozens of in game edits, redubbing entire Japanese portions of the game (namely chapter 2, I believe), and creating new costumes. They did so much censorship, and even with the lowered western rating, that censorship still probably cost them more sales than it earned them, considering it's a game in a niche market that already is prone to hating localization censorship, and they spent all that money without getting a dub, which is purely net positive in terms of sales (so long as they don't eliminate the sub when making the dub). All decisions about the original western release and new switch ports are poor decisions. And if you still think it's cost inefficient, even the most popular anime sell a fraction of what games sell and they can still get dubs, so there is no reason Nintendo shouldn't be able to dub a game that would likely get at least 100k more sales just from that alone. Lack of dub is a death sentence in the US

Oh my gosh, it might be. Trust Nintendo to use that same narrator for this game. I really think they love killing this game, which sucks cause the gameplay is actually great and the music is pretty beast. Highly recommend it despite Nintendo's efforts to make the game crash and burn

This is more like a feather in the cap, but I actually find it more funny than anything else if it is the same VA. But it'd definitely risk turning some people off, or at least put them in a negative mindset if they recognized the voice as such, that's pretty basic psychology. Marketing is all about perception, and Nintendo and Atlus have done very little to help the public perception of this game. That's why the reveal trailer cause the original Japanese Wii U release, the only uncensored version of the game, to spike to a number 1 trending seller on Amazon Japan. No company wants people to buy the old product that they don't produce anymore from a second hand seller when the new product is about to launch

Changings Tsubasa's character arc from being uncomfortable posing in a bikini, to just being afraid of being in a photo shoot made me dislike her even more. I didnt like her from the start because she was a generic "your old school friend" trope in anime but having to help her get over a fear of photography just put the nail in the coffin.

@@143622010 with my limited knowledge of Japanese some in game lines tell you weakness or boss backstory, I know that in the first boss Chrom or Dragon knight lady mention that they knew him or of him and some fact, while also have tons of small talk dialogue with the characters talking to each other not just of the battle but things going on with them in the real world, like after doing a special performance, Itsuki will praise Tsubasa on getting better and she send praise back, Persona Q 2 also has tons of dialogue like this and it sucks they weren't subbed or dubbed as there really fun dialogue in both games
@@143622010 No, it's not gonna die because of that, but it's another failure in the localization. It's the lack of dub and censorship that are gonna kill it in the US. The censorship has already affected Japanese sales enough to cause the original Wii U version to become an Amazon top seller when the game released over there, and an already niche game is just more niche when there is a portion of the audience that wouldn't want to buy a censored game and another part that wouldn't buy a game without a dub. The battle subtitles are just another cap in the feather of the number of things they did wrong, and this is coming from someone who owns 3 copies of the game (Wii U physical, digital, and switch digital already pre-loaded). These are all marketing failures, and the stupid part is that any sales they earn by being rated T are more than offset by the expenses they put into censoring the game and the lost sales from the lack of dub and people who refuse to buy a censored product.

Tokyo Mirage Sessions' censorship is a lot to go into, but the most prominent examples of changes that the western version of the game made from the original Japanese version is as follows:
1. Modified and/or replaced character designs along with several costumes acquired throughout the game as well as several enemy designs (with varying degrees of quality).
2. Drastically changed the overall tone, meaning, aesthetic, and context of one of the game's dungeons, shifting the narrative away from the subject of gravure modeling to just standard modeling.
3. A DLC which emphasized character interactions was never localized due to said DLC taking place in a hot spring with characters being shown in swimsuits (nothing in the DLC was particularly risque, as the characters were all wearing standard swimsuits for the most part).
4. The age of several characters had been increased, i.e a girl who was originally seventeen had her age raised to eighteen (which begs the question of why several of the costumes needed to be modified in the first place).
5. Many other (seemingly pointless) visual changes.
There's more to it than this if one really wishes to go into detail regarding the game's various changes from the original Japanese version; however, these are the most glaring, straight to the point examples of how the game was modified from its original release.
TL;DR: The game changed and/or removed several costumes, heavily modified the narrative of a dungeon, never localized a DLC because of swimsuits, raised character ages, and modified a number of other visuals.

It's certainly not what anyone was expecting, but it's pretty damn good regardless, they done a good job of combinding FE's weapon triangle with Megaten's (specifically Digital Devil Daga and Strange Journey) battle system.

When this came out on Wii U I didn't get it because it seemed too weeb for me
Now that I've played Persona 5 it seems just the right amount of weeb for me
Oh, you missed out. It was one of the best uses of the gamepad. The gamepad had the map, and worked as your character's cell phone and was nice to not have to go into a pause screen for that, cause you use it a lot. It doesn't sound like much, but it was really effective for me. The game looks super weeb, but the gameplay is aces. The sessions and special skills make the battle system very fun and it really encourages trying different things out.
The only sad thing is they didn't include S tier supports from Fire Emblem, where you date/marry a character. That's the one thing that really is weird, since both Fire Emblem and Persona have pair ups and this basically ends with you getting the A tier FE with everyone. Hopefully Encore will add an S tier. I want to officially date Kiria, lol. I know that's a weeb-y aspect of these games, the dating simulator aspect, but I think that also shows that this game is not designed around that. They go full otaku with the idols, but everything else is pretty straight JRPG goodness

Once you start to grow out of it, or if you're not a weeb and just like the gameplay style of JRPGs, like myself and my friends, it can be hard to get through the dense layer of weeb that is splattered all over this game, and I say that as someone who thinks this is the second best game on the Wii U and is a top 10 game of all time for me

Yes and no, it's censored compared to the Japanese Wii U version but this port is identical in every region so can't say it's really censored.

It based on the western version of the game so yes it censored (plus new content, hence encore), oddly enough it’s also the case for the japan switch version so sadly if you wanted to see uncensored content of the game, it would be from a moded wii u version of the game or the original japenese wii u version. Also to note, even though this game only contains japenese voices, the voice acting was changed for some of the script for the western version of the game, so it not just visually censored.

Yeah, the censorship is lame and does screw with the theme of the second dungeon being about embracing your sexuality and becoming comfortable with it. It also locked out some of the Japanese only DLC, and you can't buy the Japanese version to get it uncensored cause this port was based on the censored version. They actually went all out with the localized censorship the first time, bringing in the Japanese VA's to rerecord their lines to fit the new censorship, even though 99% of people in the west wouldn't have realized. That said, the songs and gameplay are boss, highly recommend the game, but if you care about censorship, then highly recommend getting a Japanese Wii U and getting that version of the game. That said, there are some exclusive outfits that were made in response to the censorship. Hopefully they add back in some of the uncensored outfits, even if the game is based on the censored version

It's Yugioh, idol adventures. This is the 10th series of the anime, didn't you know, lol. They abandoned cards and now duel with spirits they summon from another world using spiritual idol music. The funny thing is, that description is actually pretty accurate. It's a surprisingly great game, awesome gameplay, highly recommend it

The word "censorship" is not the most accurate term one could use to describe what took place with Tokyo Mirage Sessions; however, it is a term many often use online to explain changes made to media due to differing regional standards, especially when said changes involve to removal or modification of content, and is often recognized by most people despite the word's inherently negative connotation.
I am glad to hear that you and many others are able to find enjoyment with the game in its current state; however, there are those who find the localization changes to be unacceptable. For some, even the most minor of alterations is enough to "ruin" a gameplay experience. It is for that very reason that I like to inform people of the "censorship" present within the game. I do not wish to dissuade anyone from purchasing the game, but rather to inform them of the changes in content so that they may make a fully informed decision on whether or not the "censorship" present is enough to "ruin" the game for them.
Best commercial this game has ever had. Still not amazing, but definitely the best yet. Now, you guys need to focus on PATCHING IN A DUB!!! Seriously, how do you expect a game to sell to more than a couple dozen thousand fans without a dub, even my really nerdy friends who love this type of game don't want to play it without a dub

@@romeb.1060 Dude, they spent a fortune making dozens of in game edits, redubbing entire Japanese portions of the game (namely chapter 2, I believe), and creating new costumes. They did so much censorship, and even with the lowered western rating, that censorship still probably cost them more sales than it earned them, considering it's a game in a niche market that already is prone to hating localization censorship, and they spent all that money without getting a dub, which is purely net positive in terms of sales (so long as they don't eliminate the sub when making the dub). All decisions about the original western release and new switch ports are poor decisions. And if you still think it's cost inefficient, even the most popular anime sell a fraction of what games sell and they can still get dubs, so there is no reason Nintendo shouldn't be able to dub a game that would likely get at least 100k more sales just from that alone. Lack of dub is a death sentence in the US

This is more like a feather in the cap, but I actually find it more funny than anything else if it is the same VA. But it'd definitely risk turning some people off, or at least put them in a negative mindset if they recognized the voice as such, that's pretty basic psychology.
Marketing is all about perception, and Nintendo and Atlus have done very little to help the public perception of this game. That's why the reveal trailer cause the original Japanese Wii U release, the only uncensored version of the game, to spike to a number 1 trending seller on Amazon Japan. No company wants people to buy the old product that they don't produce anymore from a second hand seller when the new product is about to launch

Changings Tsubasa's character arc from being uncomfortable posing in a bikini, to just being afraid of being in a photo shoot made me dislike her even more. I didnt like her from the start because she was a generic "your old school friend" trope in anime but having to help her get over a fear of photography just put the nail in the coffin.

This game is great and all but sadly has a lot of things censored in it including the swimsuit dlc and chapter 2 to US version versus JP version.
Chapter two was not changed much. The changes to the characters were heavily exaggerated by people that didn’t actually play the game.

In a perfect world the game would have been dubbed, uncensored and had far more extra content.
I know it would've been hard to do especially with the music and such, but adding in some English dub would have been really awesome, especially during the battle scenes where there are no subtitles to what the characters are saying

This game probably would have less backlash if it was marketed as PersonaXFire Emblem as opposed to Shin Megami tenseiXFire Emblem.
Would've gotten even less if it was marketed as its own thing
