    I've been busking since 1982 and I've found that by busking acoustically, without an amp, draws people in closer and rarely fails to elicit a tip! Loud volumes pushes the audience away. A smile, eye contact and a good song is all you need! Also, a giving attitude wins the day. I'm not out there to score a record deal or silly crap like that. I'm out there because I have a long list of songs I love and I love to share them. If I can spread a little grace and beauty in an otherwise bleak, busy, hardhearted world, I've done something good. They'll see right into your heart if you are giving. Words of wisdom from an old, grizzled busker! Rock on brothers and sisters!

    Hey Hannah, thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and experiences! I've recently moved to the UK and could only bring my acoustic with me. I used to play a lot of rock and metal but do enjoy the minimalism of having only a guitar and vocals. I love playing and singing Iris by Goo Goo Dolls and just recalled that I once saw a cover of it on TH-cam. This was many years ago and it was done by you (someone recorded you playing it outside I think)! I remember that I watched you cover another song using a loop machine, too, it was beautiful. However, I've just randomly looked you up only to find out that you are British?! I enjoy the live music culture in England so much. Since I've been here (I arrived around 8 weeks ago), I met many passionate musicians who didn't hesitate to jam with me literally anywhere and it's just amazing. I'm lucky to be here and might give busking a try on days where I don't have to study. Cheers :)

    hey, I'm 14 and I went busking with my m8 in the Chester races and we made almost £150 in an hour, we had some clouds and it was awesome, I'm thinking if going on my own but don't have enough for a battery amp, would I be OK with just an acoustic guitar and also do you make much when there isn't an event on

    We went down to San Francisco a few years back, there were some pretty great talented spray paint artists I guess?? It's really cool how they get all the different effects and shading and everything on the canvas. Plus they can sell their art, and keep it off the buildings so that's cool.

    The best time I had decades ago when I busked, was when I learned how to play concerto de aranjuez. I would play at a park with a recording of John Williams playing that piece with symphony orchestra! I learned that piece so incredibly well that I actually could overlay my playing so you couldn't hear John William play. In those days they didn't have backing tracks. So playing along was the only thing I could figure to do! It took me a couple of years to perfect that piece, but to me it was one of my life's greatest accomplishments. If you really want a thrill to shake you to the core musically, play that piece with a recorded orchestra! Though I play rock, jazz, folk and love to do my own compositions. I consider
    concerto de aranjuez the ultimate in busking. That is when you have an orchestra to back you up:). But I didn't want to make meager money so I had my own profitable business near San Francisco Ca! But there is something about playing out in public that money just can't by!
    To be honest, a cute girl like the one in this video playing good guitar n singing on key can beat most guys on the street singing n playing most of the time! Making money that is! Great video, just ran across this a few minutes ago!!!

    This was really helpful! I busk in Leicester city centre. I don't use amps or microphones because I can't afford an amp at the moment and I feel a bit vulnerable when I have lots of equipment on me as I busk on my own. I have found a nice archway that people trickle through though which has amazing acoustics.

    • @hannahtrigwell
      @hannahtrigwell  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ellen Buckingham that's great! A place with good acoustics is great, that way you don't need an amp, but if you invest in an affordable amp and the quality of sound is better people will listen more - it will start paying for itself quicker than you think x

    Thank you for posting this, I've been thinking about busking for a while now. But my guitar teacher has advise me an AER amp that I can't afford right now...
    What do you think/ How do you handle negative feedback ? Especially when you have no self confidence and maybe you are busking to try to find that self confidence in what you do. Feels like it could be a huge motivation/boost (like in your case when people come up to you for your originals), but also can be a "self confidence breaker" ?

    • @hannahtrigwell
      @hannahtrigwell  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Michael Ha an AER amp is a good investment to make, the price reflects the quality - why not start with something a bit more affordable though - The Cube Street by Roland is probably the most used busking amp, and the quality of sound is great for starting out. Not everyone is going to like what you are doing, negative feedback that isn't constructive is rubbish and I wouldn't give it a second thought. Constructive feedback is good and may hurt but if you want to improve you should take it onboard! But, keep reminding yourself that you are going out there primarily for you because you love it, not to impress other people :)

    I liked this video. After summer i'm moving to the city to try to make it as an artist, and i'm considering busking. I don't think i'll have a problem with being nervous or hecklers, as i can deal with that pretty easily. The problem i have is that my songs are depressing as shit, and i don't know if they are suited for the streets? Would you recommend me playing more upbeat covers, or does it not matter if the songs are melancholic

    • @hannahtrigwell
      @hannahtrigwell  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      AndKento You should do what you enjoy/what you think you are best at. Upbeat songs are great and make for a happy atmosphere but with most buskers playing upbeat songs you will probably stand out for doing something a bit different :)

    • @auntiemoshbcs5892
      @auntiemoshbcs5892 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Play your own stuff with other more upbeat stuff dont be a complete crowd pleaser, some people appreciate more serious tunes anyway, it shows if your not playing for your self

    that aer 60 was really an investment. Comparable to a Bose L1 system, thats interesting. We don't really have buskers (never seen them if there are any here in Florida) I went Bose and gig searching. Busking sounds awesome though but......could be/would be impossible in the summer heat. Laws are really sketchy too.

    Hannah, thank you so much for sharing the video. May I hope you read this. I've been playing in the street for a while for now. I absolutely love playing english songs but only a few people in my country do understand the lyrics. That makes me feel lonely and unappreciated at times. I save up some money for the summer to go and play somewhere where crowds are able to fully feel the song just as I do. Hannah, what country do you think is the most welcoming for young performers? Or does location matter at all? Or am I mistaken about all of this? I'd be happy to know your opinion as it would mean a lot to me.

    • @pianoaround
      @pianoaround 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Igor Kotov It is best if you can play instrumental pieces. You should try doing busking in other countries. If you feel good about what you do then you don't need the confirmation of the audience to tell you that you are doing good. Although this can boost your self-confidence once in a while. Do you also play guitar?

      Oh yes, it's a struggle to study at university but as Hannah said, it's most rewarding when you can pay your bills and do what you love, that's what is busking about for me aswell. In my country, Czech Republic, it is worth for me to go busk instead of applying for a part-time job because I make mostly comparable amount of money for busking in 2 hours than for a regular 8 hour working day

    We have a lot of really good buskers in Ireland, especially Grafton Street in Dublin! My favourites are Keywest (but they moved to Belfast) Jacob Compass and a guy called John :)
    But sadly Dublin city council have put some rules and regulations in place to try and get rid of buskers, such as an 75 decibel Iimit...

      basically, it means being harassed or being made fun of by someone in the audience. I.E. you suck, or usually if your a girl lewd comments, things like that, especially drunk people heckle, so if you play at night you earn more money because drunk people part with their money faster, but their also quicker with their mouths at being rude.
