  • UPDATE VIDEO: • How I Power My Busking...
    I often get asked about what equipment I use for busking and how I transport it. Many of you know that I recently bought a bike for getting around with my kit, but it's taken a few evolutions to get my busking set up to where it is now...

    Thank you. So inspiring. My Fishman loudbox charge has just arrived. I love it. I will be hitting the road myself soon to busking for first time. Playing and singing makes my Soul come alive. This lockdown has made me get back into my passion in a big way. You can stick the 9 to 5 I'm going doing my passion. Getting my head down learning some songs now. Should be ready to hit the road in week or so. Keep on rocking X 😊

    Great video Char, loved your Bose sound system when we came down to The Smoke. It's hard to travel light when you're as good as you, I know, I'm rambling again, lol, but it's good to see you getting more equipment, and the bicycle is a must. "Then I gave myself a new problem to solve..." - Love it! :-) It's inspirational to see how resourcefully you've upgraded. Perhaps worth mentioning in this context that Fishman is hitting the market with a new version of its much-loved Loudbox Mini, called the Loudbox Mini Charge, which is identical to the original, but with the addition of a battery (4 hours of operation at top volume) and Bluetooth for playbacks. It still comes in under 10 kg and is rather compact, so might be an option for some. I own the standard model (no battery), and can describe its sound as very loud and full (great bass, very punchy, smooth), and also quite transparent (with a bit of treble added). It has built-in reverb (both channels, only adjustable in terms of the amount, not the type of reverb) and chorus (on the guitar channel, only). It has slightly upward-tilting face to it, which helps, and you can tip it a bit more with a board or towel rolled up underneath. I love it a lot, and plan to sell my Mini for a Mini Charge when it materializes.

      +Scott Becker oh wow this is really good to know Scott! I love my current amp but I got caught in the rain the other day - luckily all is fine but it got me thinking about what I’d do if this amp died on me! It’s good but I think I’d be interested in tying something different when the time comes, hopefully not soon though! I’ll check out the Fishman for sure :) thanks for watching :)

      Charlotte, I‘m delight my little tip might help you one day! And if you ever want to instead consider a Cube Street EX that sounds significantly better than the way it comes from the shop, you might want to read my reply to Megan below. (Hope I got the name right from memory.) There I describe a way to swap the woofers for a much fuller, richer sound. :-)

    Informative! I've been busking for 11 years and I've found a Backpack Gig Bag, a Roland Cube Street, and a milk crate on the back of my bicycle gets me to and from most anywhere... I have a looper pedal, and instead of using a Mic Stand, I use a Harmonica Holder to grip my microphone. It's a bit straining on the neck, but it sure beats lugging around a full mic stand.

    Hopefully these comments won't be taken the wrong way. We all love Charlotte the person. If we can help her in any way, we will. When your Streets Of London video was shown on FPL, I had a lump in my throat when I saw the comments from people. So many people love you for who you are as a person. Hopefully the weddings you did this weekend went well, and they will live happily ever after.
    If you go to Portugal for the couple who proposed a few days ago and made me cry, I wish them all the best as well. As I said at the time, you couldn't have scripted that. By getting emotional, you proved that you are a normal human being with feelings. You are more than forgiven for making me cry by uploading that particular video.

    You should look into getting a Ridgid brand tool box on wheels. It's a lot sturdier than trolleys, and since the amp is enclosed inside the box, it will be protected from the elements. When you first open the box up, it will be partitioned inside, but that can come out, and it fits an acoustic amp perfectly. I'm in the US. I don't know whether you have that brand in the UK, but I'm sure you can find something similar.

    Been busking about 8 years, playing violin and other instruments 69 years and am 75.
    Been through similar changes.
    Funny stories, hah?
    I use a power wheelchair and modified the back of it to hold my Roland Street Cube.
    Then drape a heavy duty bag to hold the Roland Speaker and cords, pedals etc.
    Use a RockPals generator 250 watt because my speaker runs out too quickly.
    Getting ready to snake my pedals together with portable 5-pedal input battery bank.
    QUESTION:
    You said your amp doesn't have reverb?
    I think the reverb on my Cube Street is just fine.
    Whatssup?
    Keep up the great work, you get an A+ from an old teacher.

      Haha, there's a guy called 'Seasick Steve', he made his big break at around 66 years old, so I still got time yet :) I'm not very good at singing or playing, but enjoy it a lot, find it very theraputic, write songs I have no idea how to sing or put music too and still dream of getting well and making a living with music. Only been brave enough this past year putting up videos of myself singing and practicing.

    Informative video...things changed so much in the past year.. I use to use a hand truck like yours, then switched to a foldable wagon for the beach, and now a foldable beach tall cart, that will hold a mic stand and speaker stand straight up. I also own the Bose L1 compact.its great...but now I have the LD systems Maui 5 GO. Built like the Bose, but totally battery operated but the battery is in the array "stick". It has a built in mixer but it also has no reverb. Otherwise its great! I sing at nursing and assisted living facilities one hour or so almost every day. Im looking for a reverb pedal that is battery operated. Would you know of one? I would like a pedal that I can power from a power bank that charges laptops and such but need a USB to 9volt input. Any ideas? Do you have to recharge the golf cart battery?
    I also have the Bose S1 speaker comes WITH reverb and battery lasts 11 hours also bluetooth. My wireless mics are all battery powered. I just need something for the reverb pedal.
    Thanks

    • @ccampbellmusic
      @ccampbellmusic  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Morgan M-James definitely if you're not cutting through on the street cube check it out but I think the cube is a brilliant amp!

    • @scottbecker3485
      @scottbecker3485 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Street Cube Ex is great...but didn't make me happy until I replaced the woofers (bass speakers) with Jensen 4-Ohm speakers. They not only give the amp appreciably more bass and warmth, but also a tiny but more volume, despite even being a couple hundred grams lighter! A really worthwhile mod to make, and totally easy. I got the idea from a fellow musician, who got it from PianoManChuck here on TH-cam. After watching his video, be sure to check out my comments below it, where I explain a way to change the speakers even without using a soldering gun. The whole project took less than 15 minutes, and the speakers are cheap (I think I paid about EUR 35 for the both of them). Now I totally love the Cube Street Ex!!! :-) So get yourself a used one, mod it, and smile. Oh, and if you don't like the way your particular mic sounds through the amp (many sound a bit too harsh because the amp somewhat overdoes it with the treble, or not full enough in the bass if your mic cuts the bass too much), try others. It's worth it in order to bring out the best the amp can deliver.

      @@scottbecker3485 Haven't had the pleasure of using the street cube ex yet (only the street cube) but do you know if the shure sm58 comes through well on it? Thanks

    • @scottbecker3485
      @scottbecker3485 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mick Dwyer I‘ll fire up the Street Cube Ex later on today and see (I think my old SM58 is lying around somewhere...). But based on my experience with all other mics on this amp (about 8 in total), I‘d say that if your voice is anywhere similar to mine (somewhat baritone = lowish), then you would only be happy with the Street Cube Ex when singing through an SM58 (which, when held close, pushes the lower regions in a nice way) if you swapped the woofers as I detailed above. Otherwise, the amp will sound a bit weak, lacking „chest“ energy. As for cutting through, it has oodles of treble on the knob, so no problem getting any mic to cut through. More of a problem to keep certain mics from sounding too sharp. Before testing the SM58 for you on my modified amp, I will say that - for busking - I have come to love and exclusively use my Bose S1 pro. It has a much easier-to-carry size, packs a solid punch without breaking up when you scream into it, a very pleasing sound and doesn‘t need to be modded to sound great. My Street Cube Ex is sitting around at home, unused, because I still love it enough to not sell it, but it‘s just not getting out with me any more.

    • @scottbecker3485
      @scottbecker3485 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mick Dwyer A few minutes later.... :-) Found the old SM58 and plugged it in. Very easy to cut through with that sound. Had the bass at about 1:30, the mids about 11:00, and the treble about 1:30. Reverb straight up, and channel volume about 1-2:00. Loud and clear! Still, I prefer the „meatier“ sound of the Bose S1 Pro. And repeat that the bass on the standard Street Cube Ex is not at all enough for me. The standard amp sounds a bit tinny.

  • @leeasbury7273
    @leeasbury7273 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Charlotte, I use a very similar voice pedal but mine has a battery powered option as well. In addition to reverb and correction, it has some cool voice doubling and octave capabilities too! It's exactly like yours except it's called the TC Helicon Duplicator. It's also green, which is my favorite color, so I give it a 10 out of 10! Check it out. BTW, cool setup. I use a Fishman mini Charge for my PA. I love it and it must have some nice preamps built into the 2 channels because it really makes my guitar and voice sound better and more refined. I have been looking for something with a little more power though...maybe the new Alto Uber FX or the JBL Compact. Anyway, happy busking!

      Hey! Nice one! If you're in the UK you can get the "granny trolley" from most markets - local stalls and shops that sell kitchen essentials - probably the proper name for it is a shopping trolley, grocery trolley or sometimes "trolley dolly". Online they seem to be quite expensive but from most markets you can get them for about £20! Good luck xx

    Hey Charlotte. I know this is an old video of yours now, but I am looking into upgrading my 30w busking amp to something with a bit more guts as my approx 6 year old unit is struggling a bit now and I've always had to push it to almost max volume to be able to busk with it when there's any sort of outside noise. During my researching I came across Bose's S1 Pro portable amp with built in lithium rechargeable battery and reverb. Just wondering if you'd heard about it? Almost what model Bose do you show here and are you still using it?

    I live in Australia and I have been going busking for almost 20 years. I spent most of that time homeless, riding bicycles with trailers, sleeping in a car, camping and fishing. Today I'm 45 and have finger injuries. I always played an accoustic guitar with no amp strumming as loud as I can, and singing with no mic. My voice has held up but due to playing a cheap guitar, with high action, pressing down hard (because I am strumming hard) I have caused micro injuries to become a real injuries in my fingers. If I wish to continue to play guitar, I have to change how I play. Anyway it's good to see people getting out and enjoying busking. Its a great life.

      @@ccampbellmusic thanks for the reply.. I feel very lucky to have had busking as my career in life. I have played to a lot of people, in a lot of towns over the years. It has taught me so much about people, myself and what music actually is. It has taught me what is important in life and how to stay happy. I feel good when I play and sing, and I enjoy the independence the money brings. I encourage anyone who wants to be a street performer to go for it. I have also been profoundly deaf since I was a teenager, so I have an assistance dog, a whippet that comes busking with me. He is always the topic of conversation. I went busking a couple of days ago, I took my bike, the dog in the bike trailer, and guitar. 🎸🚴🐾 Oh yeah...I forgot to say, I am super proud of you for going busking.

    Hey Charlotte! Thanks so much this it's so so helpful, I've just started using a golf caddy battery - things seems to keep getting heavier and heavier! @ccampbellmusic  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Poppy WS hey! Really glad you found it helpful! To be honest, it’s not that easy riding around London. I really don’t cycle far as I keep my stuff in storage close (ish) to my usual pitch, so it’s really just to get it there and back which was enough of a struggle for me! It is about a 20 minute walk each way (less than 10 minutes on my bike!) but I’m a very nervous cycler, I think any further I’d be very anxious about aggressive London drivers - especially the taxis - they HATE ME! So I’d think hard about how far you’re travelling and confident you feel!

      Apparently there are two types of power inverter. Pulse width modulation types have an erratic and less smooth power supply than the slightly more expensive true sine wave models which may be the source of your problem. The True sine wave inverters cause less of a problem with amplification interference. bit.ly/2rH6QiO has an interesting post on his blog about set ups for busking.

    • @stephenbeard4747
      @stephenbeard4747 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd imagine this could be to do with impedance, if the output is higher than the input of the receiving device etc. I may be wrong, but when you connect devices to speakers etc having the input volume lower and the output volume higher helps a lot.

      Hi Ela. I asked Charlotte same question some time back. She kindly answered. However, mine has a hum sound now when attached to battery n inverter. Hi Ela sorry for my late reply! I got a friend to help me with a bit of DIY on the wires. A bit unorthodox I think but we cut them both in half and then connected the inverter’s wires and the T bar wire by touching the red to the red and the black to the black and taping them together. As the comment below said, I’ve heard this can cause a hum, and I decided to unscrew the top of my battery and reconnect the crocodile clips to the inverter and it works much better. Might make a video about this to explain a bit better!

      +Djinn Music thanks for watching! I tried the AER and it just didn't sound quite right for me, although I know most people rave about it! Also the golf buggy battery was the most compact option and at a good price so I went for that :)

      Hey there, thanks for answering!
      Yeah I know the feeling, people adore Takamine, and I just can't understand why. When it comes to sound I guess it becomes very personnal.
      I have another question about the battery, You bought your's on power house golf's website? It's 16Ah/12v do you know if there's a minimum Ah required?

    How do I protect my street cube from sudden rain shower if out in the streets busking? Thnks

      That's a tough one. I check the weather a lot in advance and tend to avoid going out on days that say any rain at all to avoid getting caught in it. Some buskers I know carry a black bin bag with them always to cover their amps if it starts to pour down so could be a good idea for this?

      Charlotte Campbell thnks! Love your videos, your so cute, and light years ahead of me busking. I'm kinda new at busking, I got tired of playing smokey bars for 9 drunk people.lol I've been busking without an amp at all recently and boy is it challenging! I have a street cube on layaway. Hope to be amplified soon! Thnks love! I subbed ya ;)
