I don’t think people appreciate how much of the DD sound is John Taylor. The first time I ever heard DD, the bass is what caught my ear. Those funky grooves, and in songs like Rio the speed and beauty, push them into awesomeness!!

My son, who plays guitar (not bass) just came downstairs. He is 15. He said "oh, John Taylor is doing another tutorial online, cool" and sat down to watch. He is a self taught player learning all he can about how music comes together and DD was one of the first bands he ever heard (before he was even born). He said "this guy is so cool", referring to John, to which I agreed and grinned. He's into all sorts of music (mostly Nirvana at the moment) but has a genuine 80's DD poster on his wall amongst others. He's up in his room strumming away now, so gorgeous. Thank you John :)

Every time John smiles, I find myself smiling back -- love how from the 1st episode of this series he talked about his love of punk, funk and now, how "Original Sin," by Inxs brought them to Nile Rodgers and lifted "Reflex" to cool, jumpy and pulsating beat. Duranies Unite!

I watched a video JT made, similar to this one, where he spoke of getting a juke box (loaded with old 45 rpm records) as a recent birthday gift. After the festivities were done he flipped on the thing and listened by himself. He spoke of the amazement he felt listening to each record and taking in all the bits and pieces (no pun intended [DC5]). He could scarcely take in each song -- then the next record would flop down and play and he'd be amazed all over again. He spent hours doing this! The mark of a true musician with real love for music. Makes me even more happy he managed to survive '80's superstardom.

And here I was a Black American girl who felt I had to justify my love of Duran Duran when this just really brings it home how much Black American culture and music was such a huge influence on John's evolution as a bass player and the entire core sound of Duran Duran. Full circle.

Music is amazing Faith, I think it transcends race. I grew up in the north of England listening to Public Enemy and older stuff like Curtis Mayfield and Sam Cooke. Their skin was a different color to mine and they were from a different culture, but their music spoke to me. It also sounded great.

Dearest John .. wow .. love The Reflex (which so many of us do of course). And, so love hearing/seeing the song structure and its origins. I really do love the entire Seven and The Ragged Tiger album. It is an album that I really love listening to from start to finish, and I guess the fact that it starts off so fantastic is probably one of the reasons. Also, for me, that album was the one where I officially became a Duranie. I starting falling in love with the band and the music when I bought a compilation tape (may have been one of those K Tel ones .. Star Tracks?!) I know it had Hungry Like the Wolf and Every Breath You Take by The Police and Straight From the Heart by Bryan Adams. Anyways, that's another story for another time .. LOL. So, I started my fandom around that time and so became acquainted with RIO (Save A Prayer and The Chauffeur are my faves). Such a fab album!! But, it is Seven and The Ragged Tiger is the album that made me fall totally in love with Duran Duran and the music - I guess because it was the band's most recent release at that time, and I think it is a banger of an album (The Seventh Stranger is EPIC). I love the journey that album takes me on when I listen to it from front to back. And, let's not even mention the cover .. it is such a great pin-up of the band, so for a 12 year old, there was no contest - BEST ALBUM COVER EVER!! I actually still have the big poster of this album cover in my home office. Finally, the fact that Nile Rodgers was brought into the fold (and to this day, I look at him as the 6th member of Duran Duran!!) is just the icing on the cake for this episode of Stone Love Bass Odyssey. Thanks for taking the time to do these .. as I said last week .. we are learning so much!! And, of course, you know we are all waiting in Room 7609 to hear you play that amazing bass line in Late Bar (yes, as I said before, I am relentless!!). Say 'hi' to the beautiful Gela and all the best to you both xxxx oooo

Another great installment of Stone Love Bass. Another awesome bass line, gives the girls something to shake their groove thing to, and brings respect from the bass payers. Thanks for the inspiration John!

This is interesting because of the way you put the right riffs in the music and build it up to make the sound pure. INXS & Rick James yes a big inspiration to new music. Thank you, John Taylor this lesson in music.

loving the Bass masterclasses. it allows us to travel back to those decisive moments in the successful path of each song.
these are real pearls of pop which will only enrich further the love for those songs and this unique band.

I was 19 in 1983 and I embraced the look of Duran Duran. I was a fledgling bass player and also embraced the syncopated sound of JT's bass, always used those little finger octave sounds :-). Fantastic memories. Learned all the bass lines and the only one I struggled with was probably trying to play Planet Earth with fingers to the end!!!

Any chance of doing Hold Back the Rain, John? It’s my fave DD song. I believe I saw you chat about that song in a different video, but would love some more bass insights into that great song.

How many mixes exist of that song? I'm aware of at least 3 and they're radically different.
