It's legal, but we'll arrest you anyway.

  • My argument here is, the law says that carrying a knife with a cutting edge of less than 3 inches and is non locking, without a good reason, however the police decided its illegal anyway, just makes the whole thing pointless.

Watch the Black Belt Barrister. He goes into UK knife law in depth and as a knife collector himself he knows how to put it all into layman's terms for fellow collectors to understand. Thanks for the video, always interesting and informative👍

I'm subscribed to Mr BBB and watch all of his knife related videos.
Just as I opened your comment, I was thinking about some questions I'd like to ask him 😂
      Cheers

Very valid points. I live in London and always carry a knife but have a kind of subconscious paranoia that makes me more inclined to carry more sheeple friendly knives like my SAK. I carry my Spyderco Urban to work because I use it to open packaging but I am perfectly entitled to carry it on my days off too. The same with my Manly Wasp, it doesn't get much pocket time for the same reason, even though it's perfectly legal to carry. It's wrong that I should even have to feel like this, I should exercise my rights more. I read somewhere recently that rights are like muscles, if you don't exercise them, you lose them.

Anything that can cause injury can be considered an offensive weapon that can override the knife law, which means it is under the interpretation of the officer you are dealing with if you are stopped. Therefore things such as the knife being more intimating, do play a factor, also the time and the place is also a key factor, you hanging around in a dark corner (maybe you're just waiting for a mate to catch up) and you have a knife on you, an unintimidating swiss army knife you are more likely to get away with it than say a Spyderco but not guaranteed. Any knife on say a Friday or Saturday night in a built-up area if found regardless of the brand may get you in trouble with the law unless let's say securely in the bottom of your bag and you have a good reason for it, i.e. always use if for work and haven't gone home yet. But generally, it's scarce to be stopped and searched in the UK, you'll only get stopped if you look suspicious i.e looking like you're trying to conceal your identity, lingering somewhere for a long time or using what looks like an intimidating knife to the wrong passer-by who goes and calls for the police.
For instance, I've got an Opinel Picnic which has no point it's rounded but technically it's a locking knife, it's great for spreading butter cutting bread cheese, salami etc and it would be useless at stabbing anyone with the rounded edge but because it locks its illegal unless I have a good reason for carrying it, i.e a baguette popping out of my bag with saucisson and tbh it would do most of the tasks I need a blade for (i.e cutting loose threads, cutting food, opening packages, sharpening pencils, potentially freeing someone from a car by cutting their seat belt (never happened so far)) and is safer to use because it locks. The police, in general, wouldn't want the paperwork, but if they assess you as a threat i.e you look a bit dodgy and it's been a dull day for them you may end up getting nicked.

Wait... he _carried_ it into a police station, and was told "It's legal, but we'll arrest you anyway"... but they didn't arrest him?
A correct response would be to call their bluff. "Arrest me, then. That would be illegal. And I'll sue you."
But what kind of idiot takes knives into police stations to find out if they're legal? This makes no sense.

TBF I see why he did that, I've thought about doing it myself, but I have zero trust in the police, the guy was just asking advice (and got bad advice imo) but even if it was a lock knife, taking it to a police station to inquire about in most cases would not be illegal.

@@scotsman7626 I see your point - it is legal to carry a lock knife if you have a legitimate reason, and taking it into a police station would be a legitimate reason. It still seems like a strange thing to have done in the 21st century, since UK knife laws are published online.

@@litterpicker1431 problem is, it's still an absolute minefield, what's a good reason? Is going to the woods to whittle sticks good enough a reason to have a lock knife, assuming your not being a dick head? I sometimes carry a leatherman surge while cycling, because I never know what probablem my bike might have, I bet some police would say its fine, others would arrest, how am I supposed to know? @@scotsman7626 TBH, that does sound like overkill for the stated purpose. I'd be inclined to carry a puncture repair kit and a pump. That said, I have screwdrivers and a blade on my keychain. I'm still working on the problem of pliers...
If I was going to carry a £170 multi-tool with locking blades, I'd probably invest in underwear with a secret compartment. Casual police searches rarely go there.

@@litterpicker1431 The best pliers for working on a bike are Knipex Cobras, because you can use them as an adjustable spanner and they are good at that. The other day a workmate asked me to help him adjust the brakes on his racer, an old Raleigh. Weirdly instead of an Allen, the fastener holding the cable taut was a bolt. I had a bike spanner in my repair pouch but the right size was in the middle of it and I couldn't access the bolt. Out of my pocket came the Knipex Cobra XS and I adjusted it no problem. You wouldn't be able to do that with needlenose pliers such as those on a leatherman.

Too stiff? You can't win. In NYC cops were arresting people for knives that weren't stiff enough. If the cop could flick it open they declared it was a "gravity knife" and people got arrested for that.

      @scotsman7626  ปีที่แล้ว

I'm not sure honestly, I suppose it depends who you are dealing with, but this is basically the black rifle vs wooden stock rifle, same thing that just looks a bit different, with no difference to the functionality.
I assume you mean a knife being bright orange vs black? I guess you could say the same for plastic handle vs wood, some people there's probably a difference in interpretation, but it depends who you are dealing with, for someone like me there is no difference, and some people will wet themselves over anything sharper than a wooden spoon.
I'd think something like SAK or traditional Sheffield Pen knife would be seen as less aggressive than something like a SOG Terminus or Böker plus XS, but in reality nether are any more "dangerous" (I hate that, knives aren't dangerous to begin with) it's just judging something on its looks.
