Bard's part in this story was greatly expanded from the original book. In the book, we don't even meet him until Smaug attacks the town, and he is captain of the archers trying to take down the beast. All seems lost until an old thrush whispers in his ear. This was another place in the story where Peter Jackson and his writers had to find a way to avoid talking animals. It was from the old thrush that Bard learned of the gap in Smaug's armor, and the bird knew of it because he had been eavesdropping on Bilbo and the dwarves. It was Bilbo who spotted the defect while Smaug was bragging about his armor. But it was also Bilbo alone who caused the dragon to fly into a rage, as in the book he was a little more smug about being invisible.
The thought of Bilbo (in the book) being smug about being invisible makes me chuckle. His character is so humble in these movies. Also, I'm glad that they gave Bard a larger role. I liked seeing him helping the dwarves and protecting his family.
Let the final movie of our LotR marathon begin! So I had to stop the movie right where the battle scene was set up. I didn't want to get into the battle and have to stop 10 minutes into it. I absolutely cannot wait to see how this all unfolds! Imagine my surprise when Smaug was defeated within the first 15 minutes of the movie. 😮 That was truly unexpected. We did the best that we could, and just when it seemed hopeless, Bard came to our rescue and shot Smaug right where it hurts. Talk about a satisfying conclusion. I loved every minute of it. Smaug had to be like "oh crap, did not see that coming..."
Lol...right? It happened so fast. RIP to our talking dragon.
